After receiving donations from designers and retailers, The Fashion Foundation sells clothing, shoes and accessories at a discounted price and uses the funds to buy children school supplies they otherwise could not afford. The Fashion Foundation has a showroom in Farmingdale, as well as an online store. This organization is in need of monetary donations to provide local students with school supplies and product donations from designers and retail stores. Eighteen notable students at Deer Park High School were recognized by their teachers and school administrators on November 9th at the annual fall Breakfast for Champions. Each fall and spring, student champions are chosen by each of the school’s departments, alongside principal’s and teacher’s champions, and are lauded by the educators and presented with plaques in front of their attending families. Deer Park’s string ensemble provided the music for the event, held in the school library. The fall 2017 Breakfast for Champions honorees were Alexa Arbore (art), Kiera Blake (family and consumer science), Michael Catanzaro (performing arts), Melissa Fisk (technology), Lynne Gbadamosi (Principal’s Award), Brianna Huffstead (science), Mohamed Khan (health), Anthony Machuca (world languages), Daniela Paz Rodriguez (English as a new language), Vito Piazza (Teacher’s Award), Tarque Rahman (business), Ashley Ronquillo (guidance), Brayan Sanchez (math), Tabbatha Sanchez (English language arts), Alexa Skoubas (physical education), Yonis Velasquez Garcia (social studies) and James Wahl (athletics). “These students have
continually demonstrated exceptional character and conduct,” said Associate Principal Kristen Anisis. “They have overcome obstacles, shown outstanding effort in their classes and have made significant contributions to our school.”

She will accept payment for taxes at her office in the Town Hall, 200 East Sunrise Highway, North Lindenhurst, NY 11757 or by mail, beginning December 2017 daily between the hours of 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The Tax Office will be closed on Saturdays, Sundays and Holidays. During this time of year, it’s very difficult for children and their loved ones to be away from home. The FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition season will once again kick off at the Jacob Javits Lecture Center at Stony Brook University. On Saturday, January 6th, 2018 at 9 a.m., FIRST Robotics Competition teams from across Long Island will gather in anticipation of learning about the forthcoming season’s robotics competition. Knowing only that this year’s theme is FIRST POWERUPSM, the local FIRST teams, and the more than 3,000 teams around the world, will receive this year’s game rules via NASA satellite transmission from FIRST headquarters in New Hampshire. During the Long Island Kick Off, School-Business Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI), which presents the event, will also hold a special

Catching Snowflakes “We have only this moment, sparking like a star in our hand ~ and melting like a snowflake.” ~ Sir Francis Bacon As we approach the end of 2017 and look ahead to the new horizons of 2018, we reflect. Each year is full of its own moments, fleeting instants of happiness and sadness, anger and elation, all coming together to form this composite of life as we know it. And in those moments, we form the memories which carry us forward to the next chapter. There are two schools of thought relating to this; the first is that things have the ability to change in the blink of an eye, to take on an entirely new, often unexpected
direction. This can be in the form of a beautiful surprise, or a tragic turn; there is simply no telling. We are well aware of these possibilities. In fact, we will often remark how grateful we should be for the present, how appreciative of our blessings and those whom we love dearly. And yet, somewhere along the way, we tend to forget how very lucky we are.

Of course, all the theorizing in the world can only accomplish so much. A life on paper is not a life at all; the words must take shape in our actions and follow through in order to make any discernible difference. And, in that, we create our very own snowflake, a composite of our unique qualities and circumstances, our passions and personalities. No two are alike, and each one is exceptionally fragile and should be handled with care.
The second rationale follows the logic that, simply because the calendar has flipped its pages does not mean that any other substantial changes are destined to follow. New year, new you… but only if you take the necessary steps to make it so. Following last year’s record-breaking registration for the SBPLI Long Island Regional FIRST Robotics Competition, the organization will now be hosting two regional tournaments across two sets of consecutive dates. Planned as a double header, these back-to-back regionals will be held April 9th to 11th and April 12th to 14th, 2018 at Hofstra University’s David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition
