he 40 students in the SecondGrade Music Club at Deer Park’s May Moore Elementary School rang in the start of the holidays with their seasonally sweet production of John Higgins and John Jacobson’s The Littlest Reindeer. Costumed as elves and reindeer, the secondgraders sang memorable songs such as Getting Ready for Christmas and Up! Up! Up! while warming the hearts of the appreciative audience.

As you are reading this, I have already found out my first college decision. Hopefully, I was accepted. Unfortunately, the odds are not in my favor. As a college that accepts a fraction of its applicants, my dream school is certainly not a guaranteed acceptance for me. As you can already tell, I am not willing to divulge the name, as I am afraid to jinx myself. As much as I want to attend that school, the ball is in their court. Early last year, I developed my love for the college. Hopefully, this love is not platonic. I sent in my application over two months ago, on my birthday. I have been

stressing out over their decision ever since. As I am writing this, mile marker zero is less than eighteen and a half hours away. Next week, you will be hearing if I made it in or not. It was a scary road, going from a kid to an adult in just a few months. During the summer, I knew that the time was approaching; but as soon as September hit, my college application game was kicked into overdrive. Hopefully, I will never have to apply to another college again. With any luck, I have already gotten into the school I have fallen in love with. There is no doubt in my

mind that this school is right for me. If only the admissions officers could read my articles, they would know just how interested I am. All of my hard work will boil down to one of two words in a letter from that college. The first line of that letter will read either “congratulations” or “unfortunately.” Preferably, it will be the former, but everything happens for a reason. I will be content wherever I end up attending, even though I will never be able to shake that possible feeling of rejection. Stay tuned...

Ghosts Of Christmas Past By: Jamie Lynn Ryan As I prepare to host my very first holiday gathering – well, any gathering really – in my new apartment this Christmas Eve, I cannot help but reﬂect upon the many wonderful memories from past celebrations, most of which took place in the comfort and warmth of Grandma and Grandpa’s house. With the passing of my grandmother earlier this year, there was an immediate sense that this holiday season would be a bit different. So many years – decades, really – spent gathered around the big dining room table each Christmas Eve, of “helping” Grandma bake her famous Christmas cookies (basically watching and waiting and then sneaking a couple as soon as they came out of the

oven), of marveling at the gigantic Christmas tree and the beautiful decorations… of hoping that, one day, I would be lucky enough to have a house as beautiful and as full of love as Grandma and Grandpa’s. Well, my little apartment gathering may be coming together on a bit of a smaller scale, but the sentiment is the same. Any time family and loved ones get together to celebrate, memories are made – and preserved for future generations to appreciate, and add to. My only hope is that they are never lost. I was fortunate to have the opportunity to put together a project back in college for my Family Literacy class which asked us to illustrate one family tradition through words and photographs, providing details

and dialogue, recipes and anecdotes, creating a scrapbook of memories. I chose Christmas Eve and all the traditions that came with it for my family for the first 20 or so years of my life… from our traditional “table photo” taken from the top of the staircase, to my Uncle Al, also since passed, mixing the martinis as we arrived and, later on, after the first three or so courses of dinner, fighting with me for that last fried shrimp. How precious that project is today. By the time you read this, my little celebration will have come and gone, and with it, new memories made. Who knows, maybe one day it will become the stuff of scrapbook legend! Either way, I know I will have at least two angels watching over things to make sure all goes smoothly.

For students in Deer Park High School’s chapter of Students Against Destructive Decisions, their commitment to helping local veterans goes beyond Veterans Day and has become a year-round endeavor, exemplified by a recent donation of special holiday gift packages for homeless vets in Yaphank. SADD’s veterans project began four years ago when the club presented an intergenerational TV show trivia contest for veterans at the Northport VA Medical Center, followed by a Victorian tea for the center’s female veterans complete with tea sandwiches, tea trivia and tea etiquette. Last June, the club

provided a picnic for homeless veterans at the Veterans Place in Yaphank, a former motel that has been converted to a shelter by Suffolk County United Veterans. “Our members have a special place in their hearts for these vets,” said the club’s adviser, Janet Werner-Kempski. “We have even ‘adopted’ a special vet who underwent successful cancer surgery and is doing well.” Recently, a call was placed to the Veterans Place to find out what the vets’ needs were, and the SADD students responded by donating the necessary hats, gloves and scarves, supplemented by a surprise donation from the Girls’ Youth Group

SADD club members decorated the gift bags, wrapped gifts and placed a ﬂag in each bag, readying them for delivery to the veterans. “This is very important to us,” said Brian Doscher, a member of Deer Park’s SADD chapter. “It’s the best way for SADD to express our appreciation for these veterans.” “The SADD club really is an amazing group,” said Werner-Kempski. “They are like Santa’s elves. They come in, work quickly and disappear. It is a pleasure to work with them and gratifying to know that they will become good citizens of our world.” The club next plans to host a Southern-style barbecue for the veterans in June 2014.

She noted that it can be difficult for high schoolers to make the effort to excel when they are told by peers that it isn’t “cool” to do so. “It’s very cool to be smart,” Demyen told the students. “I’m so proud of you for being here this evening.” “Tonight is not an honor to be taken lightly,” said Principal James Cummings, before advising the new inductees on the future impact of their selection to the society. “As you move forward and the world changes around you,” he told them, “remember the qualities that got you into the National Honor Society. They will still lead you to greatness in the real world.” NHS President Kyle Devine provided a short history of the society, which holds four basic requirements for membership: scholarship, leadership, service and character. Four members of the NHS – Zabbatino, Vice President Ebne Rafi, Secretary Arianna Leo and Treasurer Taylor Price – spoke on and lit candles on the dais for each of the four tenets, respectively. Joined by the rest of the current membership of the NHS, Devine and Leo then presented the new inductees and Rafi administered the NHS pledge. After receiving their certificates and pins, each student shared the ﬂame of his or her individual candle – which in NHS tradition, represents learning – with the next in line until all of the new and old members’ candles were lit. The ceremony was accompanied by a tasteful performance by the school’s chamber orchestra, led by Kathy Attard.
