The varsity girls soccer team earned the leagues’ Sportsmanship Award as well as the NSCAA Gold Sportsmanship Award, with individual honors going to Taylor Brennan (AllLeague), Kristen DeBiase (All-League), Allison Khare (All-Conference), Taylor Kwintner (NSCAA Senior Excellence Award) and Emily Melendez (Academic All-League). The varsity football team, a League II playoff qualifier, included five All-Conference winners: Johnathan Bisono, Andrew Ciejka, Kyle Lessick, Christopher Tavella and Jasawn Thompson. The latter two also earned All-Conference, while Thompson was named the winner of the Rob Burnett and Bob Collotta awards. ‘Tis The Season For Memories By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Christmas time is here, once again, and as we all prepare to celebrate the season with our families, friends and loved ones, I find myself reminiscing upon the many fond memories of Christmas’ past. With that sentiment in mind, some excerpts from last year’s Christmas column… As I prepare to host my very ﬁrst holiday gathering in my new apartment this Christmas Eve, I cannot help but reﬂect upon the many wonderful memories from past celebrations, most of which took place in the comfort and warmth of Grandma and Grandpa’s house. So many years spent gathered around the big dining room table each Christmas Eve, of “helping” Grandma

bake her famous Christmas cookies (basically watching and waiting and then sneaking a couple as soon as they came out of the oven), of marveling at the gigantic Christmas tree and the beautiful decorations… of hoping that, one day, I would be lucky enough to have a house as beautiful and as full of love as Grandma and Grandpa’s. Well, my little apartment gathering may be coming together on a bit of a smaller scale, but the sentiment is the same. Any time family and loved ones get together to celebrate, memories are made – and preserved for future generations to appreciate, and add to. My only hope is that they are never lost. I was fortunate to have the opportunity to put together a project back in college for my Family

Literacy class which asked us to illustrate one family tradition through words and photographs, providing details and dialogue, recipes and anecdotes, creating a scrapbook of memories. I chose Christmas Eve and all the traditions that came with it for my family for the first 20 or so years of my life… from our traditional “table photo” taken from the top of the staircase, to my Uncle Al mixing the martinis as we arrived and, later on, after the first three or so courses of dinner, fighting with me for that last fried shrimp. How precious that project is today. By the time you read this, my little celebration will have come and gone, and with it, new memories made. Who knows, maybe one day it will become the stuff of scrapbook legend!

The Christmas season officially began at Good Samaritan Hospital Nursing Home with the 5th Annual Cookies With Santa program on December 4th. All the residents and their families enjoyed crafts, cookies and hot chocolate, with Christmas music provided by a DJ. There was also a visit from Santa with a photo opportunity for the whole family. To help make the season more meaningful, staff assists the residents in writing out and sending their loved ones beautiful cards for Christmas. Later in the month, the recreation staff will wrap a small gift for each resident so that everyone has something to open on Christmas.

Deer Park has been named for the first time to the fifth annual AP District Honor Roll, a list that recognized 547 districts across the U.S. and Canada for increasing access to Advanced Placement courses while simultaneously maintaining or increasing the percentage of students earning scores of 3 or higher on AP Exams. According to the College Board, reaching these goals indicates that districts such as Deer Park have been successful

in identifying motivated, academically prepared students who will likely benefit from rigorous AP course work. Honor Society Inductees Recognizing their commitment to the four tenets of character, leadership, scholarship and service, Deer Park High School welcomed 55 students into the school’s National Honor Society during the 53rd annual induction ceremony. As friends, family and current NHS members gathered in the auditorium, and a four-piece chamber orchestra of studentmusicians performed as accompaniment, Student Council President Taylor Morales began

Speeches followed from NHS adviser James Henry, Deer Park Curriculum Associate John Watson and Superintendent of Schools Eva Demyen. “They have honesty and integrity, which is hard to come by these days,” Demyen said of the new inductees. She went on to note the crucial contribution of their families, saying, “I thank you parents and caregivers for what you’ve done with your children to bring

them to this point.” A history of the National Honor Society was read by President Sabrina Grunseich, and four of its members – Tutoring Chairman Kyle Dillon, Vice President Jame Walsh, Secretary Catherine Pfundstein and Treasurer Adam Ahmed – reflected on the four NHS tenets, lighting a candle for each. Grunseich and Dillon then presented the new inductees, and Walsh administered the NHS pledge.
