A Time For Rest & Relaxation
When I was in kindergarten, I wanted to be a policeman. When I was in fourth grade, I dreamed of becoming a pro football player. In middle school, I wanted to be a businessman. Now, as I am supposed to be finalizing the college application process, I have realized that I have no idea what I want to be. This is undoubtably the most important decision I have had to make in my life. Unsurprisingly, it is also the most stressful. Combined with the already demanding Advanced Placement course load, I am also
juggling clubs, sports and now dozens of college applications. There are so many tasks on the checklist that I call my daily routine that it is hard to cram them all into a twentyfour hour time period. Being a student is a fulltime job. Sure, I don’t have to worry about bills, and I don’t have many major responsibilities; but sometimes the stress is too much. As much as I enjoy going to school and being as involved as I am, there comes a time when I just need a break. Thankfully, in just a few days it will be Christmas Vacation.
Over two weeks off with no responsibilities. By then, I will be all done applying to college. The ball will be in their court. At that point, there will be nothing I can do but wait and hope my dream school makes the right decision. Once Christmas Vacation rolls around, I won’t have to worry about anything. I will finally be able to focus on having a great senior year. There is plenty of time to discover what career is right for me. For now, I am content just being a dedicated student, and more importantly, a happy kid.

Yesterday, the Long Island region was awarded $83 million in Regional Economic Development Awards. New York State’s Regional Councils were created by Governor Cuomo in 2011 in an effort to jumpstart the economy and create jobs. The initiative has redesigned the state’s approach to economic development from a top-down model to a communitybased, performancedriven approach where community, business and academic leaders develop strategic plans tailored to their region’s unique strengths and resources in order to spur economic development. “I would like to thank the members of the Long Island’s Regional Economic Development Council for their steadfast commitment to supporting projects that will grow and strengthen
Long Island’s Economy,” said County Executive Bellone. Long Island was designated a Top Performer. Highlights of the 90 Suffolk County projects funded include: · $2,000,000 to Stony Brook University to build a new Innovation and Discovery Facility designed to enhance the business recruitment power of START-UP NY and stimulate a publicprivate partnership for building construction. · $2,000,000 to Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL) to renovate a facility and establish a Therapeutics Discovery Center, which will greatly accelerate translational research efforts at CSHL aimed at developing new therapeutics and diagnostics for cancer and neurological disorders. · $2,000,000 to support high performance
computing investments at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) as well as Hofstra University. Hofstra will create a Robotics Laboratory in the School of Engineering to support expanded enrollment, workforce demand, and burgeoning technologies including artificial intelligence, robotics and 3-D and 4-D printing, while BNL will acquire new high performance computing equipment for the benefit of scientific and industrial users across the region and state. · $1,500,000 to Meadows at Yaphankmixed use development comprised of residential, retail, office hospitality, parks and open space in Traditional Neighborhood Design. · $1,000,000 to Brookhaven National Lab will expand 200 acre solar array to include a

Savor The Season By: Jamie Lynn Ryan One week. Seven days. One hundred sixty eight hours. (We won’t get into minutes and seconds – you get the idea.) This is precisely how much time remains before Christmas. And with the virtual countdown comes that age-old holiday anxiety, the mad rush to finish writing out the greeting cards, shopping for gifts, wrapping, cleaning, cooking, baking… whatever your traditions call for in the race to conjure that yearly sense of merriment. Right. The holiday spirit. That is what all the fuss
is about, after all. Lest we forget the reason for all the racing around, the endless “To Do” lists, the exorbitant credit card bills… all for a day or two of celebration with family and friends, neighbors and loved ones. Seems like an awful lot of effort doesn’t it? This is why, when everyone else is busy ripping down the Christmas decorations on December 26th, I say wait. Savor it a little longer. Extend the festivities. You put all that time and effort into preparing for the occasion – might as well enjoy it as long as you can.

Of course, all of this is irrelevant to those who start their Christmas shopping in January and are finished decorating by Halloween. Seriously folks – enjoy one season, and one holiday, at a time. It’s usually team spirit that the Stony Brook University Men’s Basketball team brings to the court each game, but during a special holiday visit to Stony Brook Children’s Hospital on Monday, December 9th, there was a different type of spirit and cheer roaming the halls. The team took a break from practice to come mingle with some of the youngest Seawolves fans in the pediatric emergency department, and pediatric acute care unit. With
presents in hand, the players shot some hoops with these little patients, took photos and had some fun with the kids in the playroom. The team’s efforts brought exactly what they hoped for, smiling young faces and holiday joy. During the team’s visit, coach Steve Pikiell presented L. Reuvan Pasternak, MD, Chief Executive Officer, Stony Brook University Hospital and Vice President for Health Systems, Stony Brook Medicine, with a
Stony Brook University Athletics ‘family-4-pack’ of tickets to each SBU Men’s Basketball home game to kids and their families who are currently admitted or who have been discharged from the Children’s Hospital. Coach Pikiell is no stranger to generous donations; he and his family donated $25,000 in May of 2012 to Stony Brook Children’s that was then matched by an anonymous donor, raising the value to $50,000.
Toy Run A Success
In the true holiday spirit, readers, employees and editors of Full Throttle Magazine gathered hundreds of toys and gifts that were then donated to Stony Brook Children’s Hospital on Sunday, December 8th. Roaring down Nicolls Road in the cold weather, over 50 Long Island motorcycle riders led by
WBAB’s ‘Fingers’ and escorted by numerous local fire department engines embarked on a 15-mile mission Sunday morning to deliver hundreds of toys to the young patients who anxiously awaited their arrival. Lee and Greg Sheridan, owners of Full Throttle Magazine, have organized this event for the past four
years in efforts to make the children’s stay in the hospital a little easier. Gifts and toys were collected during the publications Winter Wonderland event on December 4th, which was hosted at 89 North in Patchogue. This year they were joined by the Sons of Italia Motorcycle Club and several local Fire Departments.
Visiting Santa
For the second year in a row, the Rotary Club of the Moriches presented Breakfast with Santa, which took place December 8th inside the dining hall of Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck. Nearly 300 people attended the event. Proceeds went to benefit the camp. Guests were served pancakes, sausage, juice and coffee by members of the Moriches Rotary Club and the Interact Clubs from Eastport South Manor, Center Moriches and East Moriches. Following the
breakfast, everyone had the opportunity to meet Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus and get their pictures taken with them. In addition, guests took part in a 50/50 raffle and raffles for a chance to win a variety of prizes that included children’s toys and Christmas decorations. Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck is a resident summer camp serving children and young adults ages 6-21 with both physical and developmental special needs. Its mission is to help
these children to achieve equality, dignity, and maximum independence through a safe quality program of camping, recreation and education. Throughout the program, campers participate in many activities, such as arts and crafts, talent shows, cook-outs, swimming and boating. The Guilds of Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center recently presented $90,000 to The Good Samaritan Hospital Foundation to support the hospital’s cardiology services. Learning Social Skills
Deer Park’s innovative Fun Club social skills program allows John F. Kennedy Intermediate School students to take full advantage of the Life Skills Center, a special simulated “apartment” set up several years ago at the district’s former Washington School. The Fun Club was implemented to help children in self-contained classes learn and use vital life skills. “This program is designed to increase opportunities for our children to be socially successful in school and in the Deer Park
community,” explained special education teacher Marie Tortorici. “We teach each child appropriate social skills to use when engaging adults and peers in school and outside in the community. We practice these skills in real-life scenarios at the apartment and then work on them further during mini trips into the community.” Visiting the apartment on a regular basis, the 25 students in the Fun Club rotate from one confidence-building activity to another, from vacuuming to folding laundry. In the kitchen,
they sort silverware, wash dishes, and put pots and pans away. In the apartment’s bedroom, they learn how to make a bed by working with a real bed and sheets, encouraging teamwork. Game-playing and sharing snacks provide chances to socialize and interact with kindness. The Life Skills Center program also recently introduced a “retail store” with assorted clothing and food items, which helps the JFK students work on realworld shopping, money and budgeting skills.

Taxes Due Boy Scouts of America Scouts and volunteers from 11 Scouting units in the Sagtikos District of the Suffolk County Council, BSA teamed up with American Legion Post 1634 in West Babylon and Babylon Legislators, to raise funds and send 492 care packages to the 48th Fighter Wing in Afghanistan this holiday season. The care package drive was inspired by Troop 1634 leader and father of a serviceman in the 48th Fighter Wing, Jim Dolan. With the help of Scouting
volunteers - many of whom have served in the armed forces or who have family in the service - they were able to create care packages that included water flavoring, packages of mac and cheese, canned beef stew, instant mashed potatoes, popcorn, candy, writing paper and pens, and feminine hygiene products. The care packages were assembled over several days at American Legion Post 1634 in West Babylon. Funds were raised to mail them to a specially-created address at the headquarters
of the 48th Fighter Wing in England, where they will be forwarded to their units’ base in Afghanistan. Local politicians from the Town of Babylon came out to support the drive and assist in the project. The Town of Babylon presented Post 1634 and the Sagtikos District with a proclamation recognizing their service and good deed to the service and the community. The district plans to do this annually, with the hopes of sending 500 care packages to an army unit overseas in 2014.
