This year has been moving fast and it’s that time of year for the Stacks Auto Food Drive. We work with North Babylon Lions Club and St. Paul’s Church to help the families in our community. If everyone drops off just one can of food this will make a huge difference for families that are in need. Together we will be helping our community. When I was little, all I ever wanted for Christmas was a puppy. Every single year, the same thing. When that didn’t happen, I switched to a trip to Disney World to “meet Mickey & Minnie Mouse.” Lofty goals for a child, to be sure… but nothing a visit to a department store Santa, list of wishes in hand, couldn’t fix. As I grew older, there were the latest Barbie dolls, electronic gadgets and toys to be had – the “fun” stuff. I remember that tinge of disappointment when I would spy shirt boxes wrapped under the tree, knowing it likely meant clothing. Yawn. How funny the way our perceptions change as we age.

Eventually, the clothes and accessories and latest trends were more appreciated, complemented with stocking stuffers of CDs and DVDs and maybe even a pair of tickets to an upcoming concert or ballgame. Then came the gift card phase, those years of wanting to head out on my own post-holiday shopping spree in lieu of putting any real thought into a Christmas wish list. And so it remains, for the most part, to this day. Aside from a few token “musthave” toy crazes that erupt each holiday season, even the children of today seem perfectly content to collect money and gift cards from their relatives and either squirrel it away or splurge on
their own special selection. Gone is the element of surprise, of wonderment, of eager anticipation of what might appear under the tree on Christmas morning. And so, too, is some of the innocence, the childish delight. How nice it would be to recapture an element of that, especially in this day and age. This Christmas, perhaps the focus should be not on what’s under the tree, but rather those around it… the true reason for the season, after all. This year, there is nothing in particular I want, other than to spend it with my loved ones and cherish the moments and the memories to be made. That’s my list, short and sweet.

BASKETS OF GENEROSITY - The National Junior Honor Society at Deer Park’s Robert Frost Middle School recently held a Thanksgiving food drive for families in the community. During the two-week-long drive, NJHS members collected different kinds of food each morning, eventually filling two dozen baskets with Thanksgiving food for local families in need.
Zoo Adventure Rain did not deter sixthgraders from Deer Park’s Robert Frost Middle School from an exciting recent tour of the Bronx Zoo, where they learned about the zoo’s history and some of its more interesting inhabitants.
“Surrounded by woods, amazing animals and architecture, exhibits and atmosphere, we forgot we were in the Bronx,” said one of the accompanying teachers, Paula Behrens. “The zoo is amazing.” According to Behrens,
students were most intrigued by the feeding of the gorillas in the Congo Rainforest, viewing lions and polar bears, and the array of creatures residing in the Reptile House.

Saving Lives Deer Park High School’s Varsity Leaders Club hosted its first of three blood drives of the school year on November 15th, in conjunction with the New York Blood Center. More than 125 students signed up to donate to the cause, and by the end of the day, the NYBC had collected 94 pints of blood from Deer Park’s students
and faculty under the supervision of club adviser Brian Tower. The NYBC, who award two $250 scholarships to two Deer Park seniors each spring, honored the school’s 3,500th all-time donor. Evan Mallon, the recipient of this honor, was awarded with numerous SAVING LIVES - Deer Park High School Varsity Leaders Club members Oliver gift cards and prizes. At X-mas time from year to year I wonder will I next time still be here. In old times my husband used to decorate With a lot of love and often up quite late. He also mentioned the then-pending next year Saying “I will get more lights, if I am still here.” It is sad that by now he already is long gone. Much changed from how then celebration was done. We had angels big and small with bells of all size. Some never used – on their wings still the price. Keepsakes survived from grandma’s and mother’s home! Now, my grandson with glee in those treasures does roam. My enthusiasm to lavishly decorate my home is gone. Now to the younger generation, this is meant to be done. Getting older, one gets more involved to figure out What the true reason for the season is all about.

Debate Team Tops The Suffolk County Community College Parliamentary debate team of Faiz Shakir and Christopher Chuisa defeated two different pairings from Penn State University at a regional
speech competition’s preliminary rounds held at Hofstra University on Sunday, December 4th. Shakir and Chuisa were one win away from advancing to the award rounds before they were
narrowly beaten by a team from Hofstra University in the final round of competition. More than 20 colleges from 11 states participated in the annual event.

To help educate and protect consumers, world-renowned fraud prevention expert Frank Abagnale offers these tips: • Shop smart: Limit the credit cards you carry. •Keep receipts and check your statements: Examine every charge on your statement before paying. You have 30 days from the date of your statement to notify your financial institution of any discrepancies; otherwise, you can be liable for any purchases. • Protect your computer when online shopping: Make sure your security patch and anti-virus
