My approach is more along the lines of wander around select stores for hours, aimlessly scanning the departments for inspiration for that “perfect,” thoughtful gift. The funniest part is, it works. At the beginning of the Christmas season, I pretty much compile a list of people I need to buy for, followed by any suggestions or subtle hints that may have been dropped throughout the year. These are generally few and far between.

The rest is left up to that aforementioned “inspiration.” While my system may not be the most efficient in terms of time, it ensures that I don’t miss anything in my survey of stores. I refuse to simply buy something just for the sake of crossing off a gift on the checklist. May as well just re-gift then, no? It’s cheaper. Speaking of price, it seems inevitable – for me, at least – that the second I find exactly what I’m looking for, it shows up somewhere else for less. Considerably less. Like, along the lines of

The kind of deal that you should really take advantage of, while returning your previous so-called “bargain” for a full refund. But, as is the case with most things done during the rush of the holiday season, we buy on impulse, we occasionally pay too much in the process – and we don’t care all that much, because, hey, Christmas comes but once a year, right? Right. Just remember that when the credit card bills come due in January.

Saints Cyril and Methodius Elementary School Student Council Members were honored last week after a moving Pre-Thanksgiving Mass organized and run by the 4th and 5th grade classes. The nine members of the school’s Student Council give of their time and talents to represent the student body, promoting school spirit, organizing fundraisers, and even participating in activities such as taste-testing entrées for the new school lunch menu! This year, the Student Council has been promoting school spirit by focusing each month on a different behavior, such as Showing Respect and Practicing Gratitude. Last month’s unique service activity involved the student body collecting gently used bedding for Missionaries in South America. Student Council members were awarded service pins in honor of their service to SSCM at last week’s ceremony and the school applauded the work they do in representing the student body. Holiday Outreach Students from Saints Cyril and Methodius Elementary School in Deer Park collected pantry items so important to families in need, especially at this time of year, when everyone wants to be able to celebrate the holidays as best they can, during a time when gratitude is so crucial to finding everyday happiness. SSCM’s fourth and fifth grade students gave of their time and talent, as well as their collected food

items, as they prepared and ran the 8:30 a.m. Mass at SSCM, the Wednesday before Thanksgivinggifting community members with their song, lectoring, and more. The food items contributed throughout the school will go to SSCM’s Parish Outreach Program. Local parishes and their volunteers are the lifeblood of parish social ministry on Long Island. Across Long Island, combined parish ministries

GIRL SCOUTS VOLUNTEER - Deer Park Girl Scouts from Troop 1163 recently volunteered at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal in Wyandanch, at the Outreach Food Pantry. The girls helped assemble the 480 Thanksgiving Food Baskets that the food pantry workers later distributed to needy families in the area. This volunteer time will help the girls earn the Harry Chapin Hunger 101 patch. The girls ran a food drive and also wrote essays about hunger in this geographic area. The last step will be to attend a Hunger 101 workshop, hosted by Long Island Cares.
