Fling’s the Thing
Competing for the seventh year in a row, Deer Park’s Dark Falcons high school pumpkin chucking team took first place in the Pumpkin Fling, Long Island’s annual championship pumpkin catapult contest held on October 29th at the Suffolk
County Farm and Education Center in Yaphank. Led by coach Bruce Sander, the skilled students – from eighth-graders to seniors – hurled the 3-5-pound gourds more than 1,000 feet with their own trebuchet, having used physics, design and
construction techniques to construct this medieval siege machine. The team also provided demonstrations at the district’s Robert Frost Middle School and May Moore Primary School.
Deer Park High School senior athletes Jarett Bonser and Oliver Tavares signed National Letters of Intent on November 15th. All-League defenseman Bonser will play Division I lacrosse for Loyola University in Baltimore next fall. This year’s homecoming king, Bonser also served as AllDivision quarterback of the school’s varsity football team. “I like the campus and felt comfortable about choosing the school,” he said regarding Loyola, where he plans to major in finance. All-League shortstop Tavares will play baseball for Fairleigh Dickinson University in Teaneck, New Jersey next fall, where he will major in business. In addition to his career at Deer Park, he played for the East Coast Jays travel team. “I felt comfortable with the FLING’S THE THING - Deer Park’s Dark Falcons high school pumpkin chucking coaching staff and it seemed team took first place in the Pumpkin Fling, Long Island’s annual championship like the right place for me,” pumpkin catapult contest held on October 29th. My Little Christmas By: Jamie Lynn Ryan
Christmas has always been one of my favorite holidays. From when I was a child, there was something about the twinkling lights, the anticipation of a first snowfall, and of course the presents under the tree that evoked just a bit of… magic, really. All these years later, some of the mystery may be gone, but the sentiment remains the same. As this particular holiday season approached, it was difficult not to let some of the melancholy feelings seep in. This has been a year of multiple losses and sadness for my family, and somehow the thought of “celebrating” seemed wrong and, well, downright impossible. How to carry on traditions when so
much has changed… For me, even the prospect of decorating, a task I had always looked forward to with great enthusiasm, had lost some of its luster. Was it appropriate? Was it worth going through all the trouble of digging out boxes, climbing stepladders and assembling a tree when my heart wasn’t truly in it? I didn’t know. As the weeks passed and Thanksgiving came and went, I needed to make a decision; and so, I reached a compromise of sorts. Having recently had the privilege to inherit some of my grandparents’ more prized Christmas decorations – including several gorgeous, hand-painted ceramic figurines made by my grandmother – I decided it would only be right to display them.
And so, I set out to find that happy medium, of honoring all the wonderful memories I had compiled from years past – but not going overboard. I chose to keep it simple… white lights in the windows, greenery outside, and special emphasis on all those holiday tokens I had acquired from Grandma and Grandpa’s house. There will be plenty of years to go all out, to deck the halls from top to bottom with flashy colored lights and six-foot trees and tinsel and holly galore. But not this year. This year, I choose to focus on family – on those who are no longer with us, and on those we are still so lucky to be celebrating with. Here’s to remembering what’s most important at this time of year, and always.

One-Act Play Festival Superb acting performances and directing skills were on display at Deer Park High School’s annual One Act Play Festival, directed by teachers Michael Moriarty and Catherine Lubrano. The theater showcase, held on October 28th and 29th, featured 10 different short plays, each directed by a student: Peter Pit’s “Gatecrashers,” directed by Anthony Henkel; Jonathan Yukich’s “Crooked Fork,” directed by Jivensley Alexis; David Susman’s “Film Appreciation,” directed by Alexandra Lovera;
Mark Harvey Levine’s “Misfortune,” directed by Catherine Taipe; Diana Son’s “The Moon Please,” directed by Ryan Connors; Don Zolidis’ “15 Minutes of Clown Fame,” directed by Tori DiTomasso; Rhea MacCallum’s “Kill Me, Please!,” directed by Allie Costanza; Michele Markarian’s “Phoning It In,” directed by Makenzie Caldone; and Andy T. Haynes’ “Battle Tactics” and Jennifer Kirkeby’s “Time Warp,” both directed by Samantha Connolly. “Working with such talented students is such

Victoria Arsenicos graduated from Saint Cyril and Methodius, Deer Park in 2016 and her formula for success has been Music + Mock Trial + Model Grades. Graduating with stellar marks and an impressive array of activities throughout her ten years at SSCM, she made sure to enjoy so much of what SSCM had to offer: Chess Club, Knitting Club, Mock Trial and
Drama Club, including performing in SSCM’s recent productions: 12 Angry Jurors and Larceny and Old Lace. On the field and in the gym, Victoria has always worked hard and played hard, as part of SSCM’s volleyball team and softball team, helping to bring home SSCM’s Championship Win from the Catholic Middle School Athletic Association (CMSAA) in 2014. For the Arsenicos, the best way to round out an academic career has always included adding a good dose of music and between her love of the piano and violin, now five years participating in LISFA (Long Island String Festival Association) and her involvement in SSCM’s School Band, playing the oboe and

Vanderbilt Turkey Trot The Vanderbilt Elementary School Physical Education Department recently held its 20th annual Turkey Trot Run. The students competed in a 300 yard timed run that inspires healthy lifestyles and lifetime physical fitness. Throughout the school year in physical education classes, the Vanderbilt students learn about the various muscle groups, the components of physical fitness, the importance of stretching, and being physically active for life. “The students prepared
for the big race during the month of October”, Vanderbilt Physical Education teacher John Schroeder stated. “We do two weeks of healthy steps conditioning and this helped the students greatly this year.” The conditions were outstanding which made the track super fast. “We were amazed by the times during our race as three school records were shattered,” added Physical Education teacher Bryan Dugan. First grader Xe’Riyah Kingsberry ran a record 1:04 seconds, second
graders Elijah Prywes and Cate McLees broke the school records with times of :56 and :59 seconds. Fifth grader Nia Derodel ran a blazing :49 seconds to shatter the school record for girls that stood for 15 years! She beat the record time by 2 whole seconds! The race once again was a huge success and all of the Vanderbilt students displayed their great talents and sportsmanship. All of the student athletes ran exceptionally well and showed their true Vanderbilt spirit and enthusiasm.

Saint Cyril and Methodius School’s Joseph Traverso was the 2016 graduation “Class Speaker” and is currently enjoying his freshman year at St. Anthony’s H.S. in Huntington. Reminiscing over his time at SSCM from when he stepped through the doors of the school for his first day of Pre-K ten years ago, Joseph reflected upon how SSCM
had prepared him, since day one, for the exciting challenges ahead at St. Anthony’s. In Joseph’s own words, “SSCM’s teachers have taught me life skills I will never forget...even sacrificing their own afterschool time to help us prepare for our high school entrance exams.” Among an impressive list of accomplishments, Joseph was recognized during SSCM graduation, for excellence in science. He received awards for Altar Service and participating in School Band. He was the recipient of the Monsignor Rooney scholarship, a Parents Association scholarship, SSCM’s Senior Club scholarship and was the winner of the SSCM 2016
Cyrilian Award. While exceeding academic expectations throughout his time at SSCM, Joseph simultaneously poured himself into a wide variety of extracurricular activities, including Honor Band, Children’s Choir, Altar Service, Breakfast with Santa volunteers, holding leading roles in the school’s Drama Club and Shakespeare Festival performances and competing in SSCM’s Cross Country Team. A model student all around, Joseph’s academic history to date proves his formula for success to be Science + Shakespeare + Service + SSCM.

Giving Thanks
Students in Saint Cyril and Methodius School’s 4th and 5th grades participated in an 8:30 a.m. Mass the Tuesday before Thanksgiving, gifting the community with their song, lecturing, reciting Native American poetry and more. They also collected pantry items so important
to families in need, especially at this time of year, when everyone wants to be able to celebrate the holidays as best they can, during a time when gratitude is so crucial to finding everyday happiness. The food items contributed by classrooms throughout the school will go to SSCM’s Parish
Outreach Program in Deer Park. Local parishes and their volunteers are the lifeblood of parish social ministry on Long Island, where across the county, combined parish ministries include thousands of volunteers and serve as many as 75,000 people in need each year.
