Babylon Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer recently joined with Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez and Councilman Tom Donnelly to recognize officials from the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the New York State Department of Environmental Control (DEC) for their roles in cleaning up our area following Superstorm Sandy. The representatives were given Proclamations from the Town honoring their

work, which was detailed in a brief presentation. The New York State DEC assisted the Town of Babylon in cleaning up over 300 oil spill locations throughout the Town of Babylon that resulted from Sandy. These spills were mainly a result of home heating oil tanks that had broken loose during the storm. The New York State DEC deployed their fleet of trucks to help vacuum up the oil and pump out damaged tanks and basements. The EPA worked

with the Town of Babylon’s Department of Environmental Control on a joint program to recover and pump out oil tanks, drums and containers, as well as other household hazardous wastes, from Superstorm Sandy. Residents were encouraged to place such items at curbside to be picked up by the Town to be disposed of correctly. This highly effective program helped keep thousands of gallons of hazardous material out of our waste stream and waters.

Babylon Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer and members of the Babylon Town Board joined with the Suffolk County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) to honor members of the Deer Park Fire Department who recently rescued a dog from a house fire. A brief ceremony was held at Town Hall in Lindenhurst to recognize the great work of the Deer Park Fire Department, as well as their Emergency Medical Services (EMS) unit who helped treat the dog on the scene. Earlier this month, the Deer Park Fire Department responded to

a call of a house fire on Old County Road in Deer Park. Upon entering the home, the firefighters discovered the dog, named DiDi, suffering from the effects of heat exposure and smoke inhalation. The residents of the home were not present at the time of the fire. After rescuing the dog from the house, the firefighters

brought it to a safe area across the street where it received oxygen from the department’s EMS unit. The dog was then taken to Deer Park Animal Hospital and later transported to the Veterinary Medical Center of Long Island in West Islip.

Students at Deer Park’s John F. Kennedy Intermediate School recently learned about politics and participatory democracy firsthand, voting in student council elections for their new president, vice president, treasurer and secretary. Fourth- and fifth-grade students were given an opportunity to run in a primary round by attaining 50 signatures from their peers and two teacher recommendations. Fourth-graders at JFK are allowed to run for treasurer and secretary while fifth-graders are permitted to run for all four offices. After this initial part of the process, students who completed all of their paperwork on time – approximately 100 running for each office – were entered on a ballot sheet. All fourth- and fifth-grade classes then voted for one student from the ballot for each office to narrow down the choices. After those votes were tabulated, the top five students – those with the highest number of votes – for each office went on to the schoolwide election. In the weeks leading up to the election, the 20 candidates prepared speeches and campaigned with catchy slogans and large posters placed around the building. “It really is a true replica of what a real election

Aaren Edmead, a point guard on Deer Park’s basketball team, signed with Wagner College in Staten Island. Edmead, who was named All-League, All-County, All-Long Island, All-Conference and All-State, was a major part of Deer Park’s two recent League IV championships. He cited the team’s appearance in the Suffolk County Class AA championship game earlier this year as another highlight of his career in Deer Park. His major is undecided.

Baseball catcher and two-year team captain Tyler Theiss will attend the University of Bridgeport in Connecticut, where he will study criminal justice. During his four years as a member of Deer Park’s varsity squad, Theiss was named a Scholar-Athlete and the No. 9 catcher in the Northeast, and achieved All-League in his first three years with the team.
