On November 10th, Brendan McCurdy and Bob Draffin, Directors, Friends of Bradstock, presented a check in the amount of $12,000 to Kevin Spellman, Board President, Camp Pa-QuaTuck, at the camp’s board meeting. With this check, Bradstock has raised a total of over $42,000 for Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck in the past four years. The money was raised for Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck from a portion of the ticket sales from Bradstock XXI, which took place on August 30th and August 31st. Bradstock is a two-day music festival featuring musical acts performing the best of Americana, bluegrass, blues, reggae, jams, funk, rock and jazz music. Babylon Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer recently joined with members of the Town Board, community members and various local officials for the dedication of “Owen Johnson Way” on Millard Avenue in West Babylon. The street dedication is in recognition of retired State Senator Owen Johnson, who represented the Town of Babylon from 1973 to 2013. Numerous elected officials from across Long Island were in attendance for the event to thank Senator Johnson for his service. Representing the Town of Babylon were Supervisor Schaffer, Deputy

Supervisor Tony Martinez, Councilwoman Jacqueline Gordon, Councilman Tom Donnelly, Councilman Lindsay Henry, Town Clerk Carol Quirk and Receiver of Taxes Corinne DiSomma. Senator Johnson’s wife and children were on hand for the ceremony. A resident of the Town of Babylon, Owen Johnson attended West Babylon Grade School and Babylon High School before joining the United States Marine Corps and attending Hofstra College. First elected in 1972, Senator Johnson served as a strong advocate for the Town of Babylon during his forty year tenure.

Senator Johnson served in a variety of inﬂuential positions as a member of the State Senate, including Senior Assistant Majority Leader, Vice Chair of the Senate Finance Committee, and member of various other committees, including Economic Development and Small Business, Environmental Conservation, and Labor. Town of Babylon officials are pictured in front of the new street sign for “Owen Johnson Way,” alongside other local representatives, community leaders and family members of Senator Johnson.

I’m looking forward to having a few days off, which I can spend with the people I love. As much as I am enjoying it here at college, a week off from class sounds really good right about now. For years, Thanksgiving has been a time when we show gratitude for the little things in our life. This year, I’ll be spending my Thanksgiving at home, surrounded by the people I love. I’m very excited to catch up with relatives and eat really good food. It’s been a while since I’ve enjoyed the simple pleasure of talking with family. This Thanksgiving, it is important to remember that this time is special. Thanksgiving only happens once a year, so we should try to make the most of it.

With Thanksgiving right around the corner, it is more important than ever to remember people in your life. For me, a college freshman, it will be the first time in months that I have seen my family. I’ve really missed them on my pursuit of higher education. Furthermore, I’m really looking forward to seeing my cousins. Thanksgiving is a time when we should thankful for the things we have. It’s a time when we should appreciate all the little things and enjoy time with loved ones. This is the first year of my entire life that I have not been home for a while. Back In Black By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Black Friday is nearly upon us once again. Can it really be one whole year since we all ventured into the void that is the morning after Thanksgiving to join the throngs searching for that special, magical bargain? Notice I said the morning after Thanksgiving, not the night of, not the day of, and certainly not the weeks leading up to… Black Friday festivities should be reserved for the day itself; that’s what makes it unique. Of course, we now have Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday and a host of other “specialty” days to

observe as well, each with its own nuances – but all come down to the same basic concept: saving money. In all honesty, there has been some argument as to whether these days actually bring the best bargains, with some contending that the last minute rush in the days leading up to Christmas Eve is really the best bet for cost cutting. And then there are those who, as we sit here today, have already shopped, wrapped and shipped all their presents before the turkey hits the table. It would be nice if we could all take a step back and view holiday shopping as the joyous task it was meant to be, rather

than as a chore, a checklist of tasks to be crossed off one by one. At Deer Park High School’s biannual Breakfast for Champions, 18 remarkable students were highlighted by teachers and administrators for their hard work and unique achievements. Twice per school year, each of the 15 high school departments selects an honored student as champion, along with three additional champions chosen by principals and a teacher. Joined by their proud parents, the young men and women were recognized at a November 14th ceremony in the school’s library. “Congratulations to the students and their families,” said Principal James Cummings, noting the challenges faced by the current generation. “This is

a tough time to be growing up, but these kids embody the core values that are still imperative and valuable to success.” Honorees receiving plaques at the Fall 2014 edition of the Breakfast for Champions included Regina Ambrosio (art), Madison Sluter (athletics), James Niemiera (business), Alexis Maldonado (English language arts), Lidia Martinez (ESL), Melissa Fisk (family and consumer science), Hanife Ozbay (guidance), Joseph Vaccaro (health), Samantha Guglielmi (math), Samantha Tucci (performing arts), Justin Ruggia (physical education), Dominick Cito (science), Jayda Brown (social studies), Brandon Ruiz (technology) and

Micaela Morello (world languages). The Principal’s Award was presented to Ahmadi Aydelott, the Associate Principal’s Award to Marcus Rivera, and the Teacher’s Choice Award to Rachel Bauer. Each nominating teacher or administrator presented a plaque to his or her chosen student and spoke about their achievements and special qualities. Technology teacher Bruce Sander displayed a to-scale drawing of the high school from the ground up, created by Ruiz over a two-year period, and noted that the student’s architectural design skills were so advanced that he will be creating plans of other district buildings for homeland security purposes.

ESL teacher Liz Gleason explained how Martinez, who has only resided in the U.S. for two years, has made such strides that she helps other newcomers and serves as Gleason’s “personal translator.” Guidance counselor Noel Skelton detailed how Ozbay overcame leukemia, chemotherapy and a hospital stay while working hard with tutors to maintain her academic studies before her cancer went into remission. “She is truly an inspiration and definitely one of my heroes,” he said. Musicians from the high school’s laudable string ensemble played a selection of classical pieces as a pleasant accompaniment to the breakfast.
