SSCM student volunteers have manned this program for a number of years and this past weekend, they were able to fill over eight shopping carts with nonperishable items like detergent and toiletries, as well as Thanksgiving goods such as canned vegetables, instant potatoes and gravy. Outreach Programs such as the one at Saints Cyril and Methodius play an irreplaceable role for the communities in which they minister their services and have served millions throughout the years. Community Service is an overriding theme within the walls of Saints Cyril and Methodius Elementary School, as well. With the school offering a variety of volunteer opportunities to explore each year, SSCM

Over 175 guests comprising of civic associations, community leaders and program ® volunteers enjoyed the festivities, which included a salute to retiring

The reception also included large donations of food and refreshments from local establishments in addition to live music from the Deer Park High School Pep Band, led by Jerry Cannarozzo. The Beautification Program encompasses the Adopt-A-Highway, Adopt-A-Spot and AdoptA-Park initiatives as well as Community Service, Stewardship and Scouting. At the ceremony, Supervisor Schaffer and Councilwoman

Gordon, who serves as chairperson for the program, joined with Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez, Councilman Tom Donnelly, Town Clerk Carol Quirk and Receiver of Taxes Corinne DiSomma to express their heartfelt appreciation and gratitude to all the volunteers in attendance for their efforts to help keep the Town clean and beautiful. Past Peak By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Well there it is. I hope you enjoyed autumn. Did you savor the glorious foliage on your drive to work? Did you pick enough apples and pumpkins to last you through your winter hibernation? Did you take in the requisite corn mazes and haunted houses and eat far too much Halloween candy in the process? Like it or not, once those leaves begin to brown and ﬂutter to the ground en masse, autumn is officially past its peak. Forecasters are already beginning

to utter that dreaded four-letter word as the temperatures drop each evening. Heck, even some retailers seem to have hit fast forward, starting their “Black Friday” sales the day after Halloween this year. Um… did we miss something? As far as I’m concerned, “winter” is still a few weeks out. There’s still plenty of turkey and trimmings to be enjoyed, leaf piles to jump into and mum plants to admire. The shopping and decorating and wrapping and cooking can wait a bit. There will be plenty of time for all that over the next

month or so. And then… well, then it’s just plain old winter. Slow down. Savor. Repeat for next season. It’s not that difficult. Perhaps if everyone wasn’t in such a great rush, there would be more time to accomplish things. Mindset is everything. In the meantime, enjoy the cool, crisp autumn air as you rake your leaves and plan the Thanksgiving menu for next week. Be thankful we have four seasons to enjoy, and be thankful for all those whom you are blessed to share them with.

First Amendment Constitutional law students from the high school attended the “Icons of First Amendment Freedom Speak Out Live!” event at Stony Brook University on October 9th, presented in partnership with the Law, Youth and Citizenship Program of the New York State Bar Association and the Touro Law Center’s Project PATCH. Featured live speakers known for their landmark Supreme Court cases

included Mary Beth Tinker and John Tinker, lead plaintiffs in Tinker v. Des Moines, and Cathy Kuhlmeier Frey, lead plaintiff in Hazelwood v. Kuhlmeier. Students were able to hear first-person accounts of each speaker’s experiences related to these landmark decisions as well as enjoy discussions on the current impact of these decisions on students’ rights by a panel of experts in the fields of

law, journalism and First Amendment advocacy including Jay Worona, counsel for the New York State School Boards Association. “This unique event provided our students with the opportunity to experience living history and explore First Amendment freedom at a young age,” said FACS and social studies curriculum associate Heather Stewart.

Historically, Fire Island has been a place where Long Islanders could spend a summer afternoon. Unfortunately, following Superstorm Sandy, Fire Island is not the carefree place that it once was. Even still, Fire Island is an unparalleled paradise. As a longtime resident of the little barrier beach, I can attest to the idea that this tiny strip of beach is more than a vacation spot. Fire Island is a destination full of history, hope and relaxation. Unfortunately, the government is trying to change all of that. Recently, there have been talks about the implementation of eminent domain on the island. Eminent domain is the government’s power to seize private property for public betterment. This may seem like a viable option for the hurting island, but in actuality, it would be catastrophic. In a mass buyout of homes, the Army Corps of Engineers, in conjunction with the United States Government, wants to create a massive dune that would not only block the view

of the ocean, but also displace wildlife and people. By evicting my family, along with hundreds of others, our government plans on destroying our homes and creating a mound of sand. This dune may seem unprecedented, but it is most certainly not. There have been numerous attempts to block the destructive power of the Atlantic Ocean. All of these previous dune projects have failed to the merciless waves. Millions of dollars have been lost trying to enact this exact same plan. What would make this trial any different? There is little hope that the dune would survive in the long term, and its price would be excessive. Hundreds of lifelong Fire Island natives like myself would be displaced for a simple mound of sand. There is no scenario in which our beloved Fire Island should be put through this. I have stated it before and I will continue to until someone listens; protect our homes, not our sand!
