DeMarco gave the opening remarks at yesterday’s forum. He stated, “Most people don’t realize the extent of gang activity in Suffolk County, and the fact that one of the most highly trained and effective gang units in the State of New York operates out of the Suffolk County Correctional Facility in Riverside.”

One Year Later
By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Almost exactly one year ago, Long Islanders experienced what can only be described as the wrath of Mother Nature in the form of Hurricane Sandy. In the midst of power outages and damage assessment, we here at South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers managed to publish a newspaper, and I – displaced from my home on the south shore – attempted to compile a few thoughts in an effort to produce a column amid the chaos. Here are a few excerpts… We always think it’s not going to happen here. Whatever “it” is, we have grown so used to absently

observing most catastrophes from a distance, never foreseeing the day when they will wind up right in our own backyards. Literally. Some people lucked out. Others were not so fortunate, and will spend the next few weeks and months – years even – cleaning up all that was left behind, however little it may be. They say someone always has it worse off than you, and this is true. Except in this case, many of those most devastated happen to be our family members, friends and neighbors – the worst off of whom don’t even have a home to go back to. As with all events of this magnitude, peoples’ true colors tend to shine through, for better or worse. Here in the Long
Island/New York City area, we have witnessed a bit of both. But there are slivers of brightness struggling to shine through the chaos. Strangers banding together to organize food and clothing drives, businesses opening their doors to the public for heat, shelter, a place to charge cell phones and laptops and reconnect with the outside world… all signs that, amidst the mayhem, some basic humanity does exist. Let’s all hang in there. Together, we can – and will – get through this. And we have. Mostly. Some better than others. Still a long road to full recovery, but at least we have begun the journey.

As we head into the holiday season, it is crucial to realize just how caught up we can get in the trickor-treating, gift buying and pumpkin carving. Sure, these things are important, but the true measure of a successful holiday is the quality of the memories we create with our family. Some of my fondest memories took place around a Christmas Tree. Others derived from the carving of the turkey. More still were captured while dressed up in Halloween garb with my mom, dad and little brother. I vividly remember being carried in my father’s arms, dressed as a pumpkin, while my brother was in
his stroller, dressed as a pea! As Halloween is right around the corner, our minds shouldn’t be focused on getting to Christmas, but enjoying the ride. Each day is a blessing. Throughout my seventeen years on this Earth, I have learned many things. To me, the most important tidbit is that: “In today’s society, the family unit is broken up. When we’d sit down to dinner together as a family, we’d learn about each other. We had something people don’t get today.” This quote from Paul Prudhomme exemplifies what experts have been saying all along. The simplest social
group, the family, has been torn apart by modern happenings. In school, I take a class called Sociology, in which we learn that the most powerful group is a family. Weber, Marx and countless other sociologists have their own view on the family unit. All of them unanimously agree that, without those related to us by blood, we would be nothing. Keeping in contact with those we care about is especially crucial around the holidays. Throughout all of the gift-giving and traditions, find time to spend a moment with those you love, your family.

Applebee’s restaurants throughout Nassau and Suffolk will hold their annual Breakfast with Santa on Saturday, December 7th at 8:30 a.m. The fundraiser helps support the good work of the U.S. Marines “Toys for Tots” program. Advanced reservations are required and a limited number of tickets are available for a $10 per person donation. Children under 2 are admitted free. Guests receive breakfast compliments of Applebee’s, goodies, raffle tickets for door prizes and will have the opportunity to take a photo with Santa (bring a camera). One-hundred percent of the proceeds will go to U.S. Marine Corps “Toys for Tots” Program and will help brighten the holidays for local families many of whom are still recovering from the devastating effects of Sandy. Finding New Paths Deer Park High School freshmen got a head start on developing their career ideas at the school’s annual Career Day, making the most of the opportunity to learn from 45 presenters from a variety of careers, including financial experts, lawyers, physicians, nurses, psychologists, dentists, engineers, firefighters, electricians, social workers, broadcasters, authors, artists and athletic trainers. The day began with a keynote presentation by Thomas Henkel, the Northeast regional director for Mitel Corporation, who spoke
to the more than 325 eager students about setting goals, overcoming setbacks and striving for success. The freshmen then attended three workshops in the cafeteria and gyms, where they were broken into small groups of 8-10 students and sat down at a table with a professional for 10 minutes to discuss his or her career. At the sound of a bell, the students got up and rotated to the next table to meet with another professional for 10 minutes. Each student was introduced to 10 different professionals throughout the course of the event, including representatives

Assisting the event presenters throughout the morning were members of the high school’s senior internship program, which helps students find and complete unique internships in areas of interest to them. “For many of the students, this was the first time they were able to speak with a professional in the field in which they are interested, and some even secured an internship for the rest of the school year,” said teacher Christopher Kauter, the internship program’s adviser. “Our goal was to expose our freshmen to a variety of careers that may pique their interest and set them on a career path,” said Career Day coordinator Jill Perry-Eising, a member of the school’s business department. “For example, if a freshman met an accountant during the day whose discussion interested him or her, the student might then take elective classes such as accounting, financial management and personal finance, providing a clear idea of a career pathway to pursue in college. I believe we accomplished that goal.”
