He directly supervises me, as I play the Number I Position, or Loosehead Prop. A Loosehead Prop is a crucial part of any front row. Capable of taking charge in the scrums and influencing the outcome of any ruck, I like to think that I help the team when I can. Joining The Team The Villanova Rugby Football Club is a group of guys who really want to win. Practicing five days a week, Villanova’s Rugby team can compete with some of the best teams in the nation. After winning the championship in 2012, my team is looking to do it again this year. Runaway Success Continued From 3 along the way. For the third year in a row, the event included a Motorcycle and classic car run sponsored by Hansen Home Designs. Also, another new feature was a live performance by students enrolled in the All Music’s Rock-n-Roll University, including numerous individuals with disabilities receiving services from DDI. The day was capped off with a festival in the park complete with picnic lunch, music, games, a petting zoo and more. Harry Stands Alone By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Unfortunately, following last week’s printing, Harvey the Goldfish succumbed to… well, whatever it is carnival goldfish often succumb to, only five days after his “adoption” into my home. He didn’t live to see his name in print, but I’m sure he would appreciate all the condolences received upon his untimely passing. Harry, his fishbowl buddy and hide-and-seek companion, seems to be holding up quite well. Perhaps he had something to do with Harvey’s demise.
Maybe he prefers the solitude. After all, that tree is really only big enough for one average-sized goldfish to hide behind at a time. I contemplated buying Harry a new friend, but I’m a bit hesitant. Rarely has a fish seemed so lively, so content, so vivacious – darting to and fro, bouncing off the sides of the bowl. I half expect to find him lying on the counter one morning, fins up, as a result of diving headfirst over the edge. I suppose I must look gigantic to him, magnified through the bowl, looming
over his tropical sanctuary. And yet there are times when I’m standing at the counter, preparing dinner, and he will come and press his face against the glass, eagerly watching my every move as if to say, What are you making? Is it for me? Can I have some? Please?? And so, once again, as of this writing, Harry is living happily – whatever “happy” is for a goldfish. I’ll leave him on his own for a while, King of the Bowl, and see how it goes. In the meantime, I’ll bring home a copy of my column for him to read.

Top Ten Seniors Named Deer Park High School’s top 10 ranked seniors were recently recognized at an annual breakfast ceremony in the school’s library, and valedictorian Sabrina Grunseich and salutatorian Aaron Zhang were announced. The senior top 10 list – the academically astute students with the highest grade point averages in this year’s graduating class – was rounded out by Kyle Dillon (ranked third), Emily Fowler
(fourth), William Keller (fifth), Mauricio Montes (sixth), Maria Skoljarev (seventh), Alban Astafa (eighth), Shahan Mian (ninth) and Jonathan Wagner (10th). “The Top 10 breakfast is one of the highlights of each school year and an opportunity to recognize the top students for their hard work, dedication and diligence over the last four years,” said Principal James Cummings. “What is even more impressive
than these students’ academic resumes are their accomplishments outside the classroom. They are in the top 10 because of their GPAs, but they are just as impressive as athlete, artists, musicians and community members. They make Deer Park High School a better place, and they make the Deer Park community a better place.”
INSTALLATION OF OFFICERS - Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Council No. 6556, Knights of Columbus in Wyandanch, recently held their annual Council Installation of Officers on Saturday, October 11th at their Parish Hall. District Deputy, Carmine E. Soldano of the 8th NY District, officiated at the installation ceremony. One Deacon and 10 Officers were installed. There were approximately 60 guests and dignitaries in attendance.

The high school bowling season hasn’t begun yet, but Deer Park junior Adam Zimmerman already has something to smile about. In July, Zimmerman proved to be the champion in the under-15 boys category at the North Pointe Junior Gold
Championships. To win, he defeated opponent Michael Schoerner, 377-350 and 387-274, in back-to-back matches. More than 2,479 competitors participated in this major national youth bowling event held in the Buffalo, N.Y. area. A member of Deer
Park’s Section XI New York State championship team, Zimmerman is no stranger to success in the bowling alley. As a studentathlete, he has earned AllCounty status twice and was named to Newsday’s All-Long Island team this past spring. He bowled a county-high 31 match points last year while en route to improving from his freshman average of 215 to a county-leading 235.86 in 2013. Zimmerman has earned more than $33,000 in college scholarship funds through tournament competitions, $6,000 alone from the Junior Gold event. Inaugural Year Celebrated Dignitaries, industry leaders, administrators, educators and students gathered to mark the inaugural year of the Long Island Pathways in Technology Early College High School (LI P-TECH). In an official ceremony held at Farmingdale State College, LI P-TECH’s first graduating class — the Class of 2020 — was celebrated by 60 notables from across Long Island. Offering words of welcome at the start of the ceremony were a number of LI P-TECH’s key partners including Dr. W. Hubert Keen, President
of Farmingdale State College; Dr. Lydia Begley, Associate Superintendent for Educational Services at Nassau BOCES; Rhonda Taylor, Assistant Superintendent of the Uniondale UFSD; Frank Robilotto, Chief Executive Officer of Arkwin Industries; and Christine Lopes, Grants Administrator for the Uniondale UFSD. Long Island P-TECH is an important educational model,” Dr. Begley said in her address. “It is the beginning of a strong pathway to college and careers, and provides
essential opportunities for Long Island students. LI P-TECH’s unique partners work together to help meet regional demands, and to address the state’s concerns for equity of access to college and career readiness.
