This year’s Over 50 Fair had a successful run on September 28th at the Melville Marriott. Fair Director Barbara Kaplan said she has received many positive comments from both attendees and exhibitors. The Fair had 90 exhibitors and 30 classes covering a variety of disciplines, all designed to help those over age 50 live their lives to the fullest. Fishy Friends By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I recently adopted two pet goldfish. And by adopted, I mean spent $5 on 30 chances to win one at a carnival, and spent 17¢ on the other at a local pet store. Add to that the expense of a fishbowl, pretty neon-colored gravel, a fun plant for the two of them to dart behind whenever I’m within a 5 mile radius, the all-important goldfish food which they don’t appear to even notice floating overhead, and a scrubbing brush and net for the weekly cleaning process and maintenance. All that, with the hope that these two finned friends

will make it through the week, maybe even a month or two. My record so far is one whole year, upon which milestone my beta fish promptly croaked. I suppose the birthday celebration was too much for him. So far, as of this writing, five days and going strong. Not bad. Of course, I realize goldfish aren’t the most sociable of pets to have, but these two – whom I named Harvey and Harry – are beyond standoffish. I turn the light on, they swim away; I sprinkle a few food flakes in their bowl, they’re nowhere to be found. I walk away, turn the light out and – viola – there they are, faces pressed against the glass.

I have visions of the conversation that must go on between them when I’m not in the room: When is the human coming back? Why does she bother us? Did you eat today? I wish we had more trees to hide behind. Yes, I know – it’s silly. But they are home alone together all day; there must be some form of socialization between them, no? At any rate, I can feel satisfied that I rescued two goldfish, one from the madness of the carnival setting, the other from the schools of fellow fish in the aquarium. Even if they do prefer to cram themselves into a corner by themselves.

The malpractice of “journalists” on prominent gaming journalism websites such as Kotaku and RockPaperShotgun was first examined under a critical lens when an independent developer named Zoe Quinn was exposed. She had cheated on her boyfriend, now her ex-boyfriend, and he had written a blog about what had transpired, intriguingly titled: “The Zoe Post.” In this blog, Eron, Zoe’s ex, documented a list of reasons and events leading to the break up, which spurred reaction from the community when it was revealed that she was having intimate relationships with people who wrote articles for gaming news websites, namely, those who wrote positive reviews and articles for Zoe’s game, “Depression Quest,” a text-based adventure game which was not well-received by the community.

As the corruption began to come to light, leading to public outcry, it was quickly censored and oppressed all across the internet. As people became more enraged, due to the fact that their right to freedom of speech was being taken away by anonymous hands, members of the community invested in the industry who felt as though it was wrong to condone corruption, started digging. More tidbits of corruption were unearthed, exposing financial and intimate relationships between writers and their sources, the developers. However, this was not before journalists responded to the community’s irritation over the lack of ethics among these journalists. These journalists defended Zoe, taking cover behind unrelated societal issues, such as misogyny and hostility towards feminists. Each week, the

journalists became more smug, making more outlandish claims while laying back, believing that everyone was powerless and that there would be no reprimand for the extremely unethical things they had done. These outlandish claims stated things such as, “The gaming industry is dying,” as well as a comparison of gamers to the terrorist organization, ISIS. These protests have gone on for weeks, indicating hope for the cause - and that cause is justice. Professional journalists know that the things they have carried out and the way they have handled public response is extremely wrong. These writers have betrayed our trust; but more importantly, their duty. People must know of the injustice that befalls the fifth estate so that it may be corrected. Awareness is crucial to fighting relentless corruption.

Four superb singers from Deer Park High School – Katherine Keller, Mauricio Montes, Jessica Orelus and Alec Winters – were recently selected by the Suffolk County Chapter of the New York State Council of Administrators of Music Education for the 2014 AllCounty Mixed Chorus. The foursome will

perform at the NYSCAME/ SCMEA All-County Concert on November 21st at Half Hollow Hills High School East in Dix Hills. This honor was the result of their strong sense of dedication to their musical studies as well as reflecting their highscoring performances at last spring’s NYSSMA solo

festival. “I am really looking forward to performing with a group of musicians who are as dedicated to singing choral music as we are,” said Keller. “We are all very excited to perform such beautiful but difficult music,” added Montes.

Learning Fire Safety Students at Deer Park’s John Quincy Adams and May Moore primary schools learned about fire safety after recent visits from the Deer Park Fire Department, designed in conjunction with National Fire Prevention Month. “It’s okay to be afraid, because you’re supposed to be afraid of fire,” Assistant Chief Phil Scarfi told the children during the assemblies. “I will teach you ways to protect your family.”

Scarfi, who has been conducting Deer Park’s fire safety workshops for decades, emphasized the “three Ps” – preventing a fire, planning in case of fire and practicing the plan. He discussed ways that the students could avoid fires happening in the home and important topics such as candle safety and the proper use of smoke alarms. Following Scarfi’s indoor presentations, students at both schools

They also got to meet local firefighters and take an up-close look at the engine. “A big thanks to the Deer Park Fire Department,” said JQA Principal Christine Criscione. “It was a wonderful opportunity for our students to visit with some true local heroes.”

Over sixty residents and community leaders came out to assist in the cleanup of the corner of 21st Street and Straight Path, which the fire department has committed to clean and maintain. Supervisor Schaffer presented officials from the fire department with an official Town proclamation

for their dedicated service to the community. The Wyandanch Fire Department also maintains two additional sites: the George Sims Veterans Memorial Plaza and the corner of Colonial Springs Road and Main Street in Wheatley Heights.

Theatre Night Set The Deer Park School District presents its annual Theatre Night on Monday, November 10th at 7 p.m., to be held in the auditorium at Deer Park High School. The Synergy Theatre Company will perform the one-act play “The Best Thing,” written by Deer Park High School senior Anthony Anello, who was recently selected

a winner in the New York State Theatre Education Association’s annual Student Writing Contest. Frank Caliguiri, Deer Park’s assistant superintendent of pupil personnel services, will discuss the important connection between the district and Synergy Theatre. The high school’s 2015 spring musical will be announced, accompanied

by a special performance, and theater production directors from each of Deer Park’s schools will discuss overviews of the plans for this school year. The evening’s agenda will also include the induction of members of the school’s International Thespian Society, who will perform, and a speech by Superintendent of Schools Eva J. Demyen.

Deer Park High School student and budding playwright Anthony Anello was a winner in the New York State Theatre Education Association’s annual Student Writing Contest. Anello’s play, “The Best Thing,” was one of more than 40 submissions for the prestigious contest. It will be performed by student actors on Jan. 10 at the Saturday Night Showcase at NYSTEA’s 2015 Student Conference, to be held at the Villa Roma Hotel in Calicoon, N.Y. Anello and the other attending playwrights will be presented with onstage certificates, and the performers, directors and playwrights will meet for a discussion of the pieces after the performances. Anello, a senior, is heavily involved in drama at Deer Park, including the one-act festival, the annual musical and the winter festival. This will be the third year in a row that he has attended the conference, but was his first time submitting a play. “The Best Thing,” which he wrote last June, is a drama about a playwright husband in conflict with his wife. “I’m really excited for the performance at the conference,” said Anello. “It’s a great weekend overall, and wonderful to be around people who have a common interest.” “Anthony is a great student and I am so glad I have had the opportunity to be his director for the last three years,” said teacher James Henry.

On Sunday, October 5th more than 600 friends, participants and supporters came together for the fifth annual United Cerebral Palsy Association of Greater Suffolk Inc. (UCP of Suffolk) 5K Walk & Wheel at Belmont Lake State Park to support adult and children with disabilities. The noncompetitive event raised over $90,000. The funds raised will support the programs and services of UCP of Suffolk which provides to almost 3,500 individuals with disabilities each year. “We hold a walk and wheel instead of a race because we want to include all of our program participants, friends, family and employees in promoting life without limits for people with disabilities,” Stephen H. President and CEO said. “We are so pleased with how much this event has grown. The marathon and half marathon are part of County’s new ‘Healthy Suffolk’ campaign – a region-wide initiative designed to encourage and assist residents live healthy and active lives. “The Suffolk County marathon is a mechanism to highlight the incredible communities, natural resources and businesses we have here in Suffolk County,” said County Executive Steve Bellone. “Suffolk County is a world renowned destination. From the Hamptons to our wine country to our amazing downtowns and world class beaches, we are a destination for tourism, businesses, recreation, and living. Our marathon will give us an opportunity to showcase all of that.” The County Executive will participate in Suffolk County’s inaugural marathon and in addition will be running the New York City marathon this year in support of the Hope for the Warriors Foundation. The marathon has a distinctly planned route that was designed to showcase and drive tourism towards downtowns along the Great South Bay. The race, which is a Boston Marathon qualifier, will begin and end at Heckscher State Park in East Islip with a Taste of Long Island wine and food festival to end race festivities. Suffolk County has partnered with New York State for race coordination and planning. “We are proud to work alongside Suffolk County to make certain the inaugural marathon is a success,” said Wayne Horsely, Long Island Director of New York State Parks & Recreation. “This really is a great opportunity to highlight the beautiful Heckscher State Park and we look

forward to welcoming the thousands of race participants and supporters.” “The marathon will give the County the opportunity to shine a spotlight on our vibrant downtowns and give our local businesses a well needed boost,” said Deputy Presiding Officer, DuWayne Gregory. “We encourage all residents to cheer on the participants in the many spectator viewing parties that will line the marathon route.” County Executive Bellone also introduced the County’s new ‘Healthy Suffolk’ campaign, which encourages

residents to Live Well, Be Active and Eat Smart. The campaign is to remind the public that healthy living is different for each individual, but is designed to help keep health and wellness on the forefront of people’s minds. Healthy Suffolk will also increase access and raise awareness of County public health efforts. Yan Baczkowski, president of the Long Island Visitors and Convention Bureau, added “this type of event will increase tourism to Suffolk’s beautiful downtowns and is exactly what we need to ensure our local economy continues to grow.” Through sponsorship and entry fees, the marathon

is designed to not only be cost neutral but profits are expected. All profits will be donated to local Suffolk County veteran organizations. In addition, the marathon will have a special veteran’s race category. “We are proud County Executive Bellone continues to find creative ways to support local veterans,” said Tom Ronayne, Suffolk County Director of Veteran Services. “We are looking forward to working with race organizers so that our veteran population has all the information they need to know for this event.” “This marathon route is well-thought out and the running community is looking forward to a great race,” said Brendan Barrett of Sayville Running Company. “We thank the County Executive for launching this event and will support the race in any way we can.” Suffolk County’s Department of Economic Development studied the per capita revenue generated per race participant of other well-known marathon events and as a result Suffolk County Marathon to generate $7.9 million (based on 4,000 participants). The course will start at the entrance to Heckscher State Park, go north to Montauk Highway and head east. It will loop through St. John’s University and past the historic Bourne Mansion before continuing along to downtown Patchogue. After looping around downtown Patchogue, the runners will return to Heckscher State Park via Montauk Highway. There will be designated cheering sections in Oakdale, Sayville, Bayport, Blue Point, and Patchogue with live music and entertainment.
