I first became a Yankees fan back in the fall of 1995, as the team made its first run at the postseason since 1981, with the legendary Don Mattingly at its helm. For the first time in my lifetime, I understood the magnitude of this storied organization. And then, just like that, the run was over. Mattingly walked off into the sunset, having never made it to a World Series. The end of an era. But there, waiting in the wings, was a rookie shortstop, destined to pick up the torch and run with it. And run he did, for the next 20 seasons, leading the Yankees to five World Championships
and racking up countless milestones along the way. Derek Jeter exemplified what it meant to be a true Yankee in an era when there were very few, if any, athletes doing things the “right” way, never mind in a city as unforgiving as New York. Much has been said, and written, over these last several weeks – really, throughout the past year, since Jeter announced his plans to retire at the end of the 2014 season – analyzing the legacy of the player, the upbringing of the man, his place in Yankees, and baseball, lore. To that, I can only add the following: while he may never have been the “best” in any one statistical category, as
relentlessly pointed out by rival fans and the national media, he was undeniably in a class by himself in the only categories that counted – dignity, sportsmanship, integrity… and, oh yeah, he had quite the knack for coming through in the clutch, when the stakes were the highest, the pressure the greatest. Not bad for an “overrated” player, right? Yankees fan or not, these last several weeks have been quite the emotional rollercoaster. An historic era in Yankees history has come to a close, the only one my generation has had the privilege to witness. And what a privilege it was.

Movement Speaks STUDIO OF DANCE
Movement Speaks Studio of Dance recently opened its doors in Babylon Village, at 225 Deer Park Avenue. After having danced for 27 years and taught for nearly 15 of those years, partners Aileen Smisek and Megan Connell decided to take the leap and open a dance studio of their own. Movement Speaks offers classes for children from ages 18 months through adult levels. These include: Mommy & Me, Pre-School, Ballet, Tap, Jazz, Hip Hop, Lyrical, Contemporary/Modern, along with a competition team training class. They also feature an award-winning competitive team, open to all serious dancers. Aileen and Megan’s choreography has been honored through the years with numerous prestigious awards at dance
competitions, both on the Regional and National level. Many of their students have gone on to dance in college and beyond. Aileen and Megan plan to involve the studio in upcoming community events such as the Babylon Fall Festival and the Old-Fashioned Night of Shopping. Also in the works for the coming year are a Zumbathon, a Mommy & Daughter Tea Party and, during the holiday season, a “12 Days Of Christmas” event where parents can drop their children off at the studio for a dance class and a special project while they shop locally in the Village. Movement Speaks looks forward to being an active member of the Babylon Chamber of Commerce, as well as the local community. Learning To Manage Time management is a key trait needed to succeed in college. Between clubs, sports, schoolwork and a social life, the average college student is pretty booked. There is rarely enough time to do much else. However, if you can manage your time right, college proves to be a whole lot of fun. Each kid needs to make decisions for him or herself regarding work hours and sleeping time. I was once told
“study more than you sleep; sleep more than you party; but party as much as you can.” In order to succeed in college, it is of the utmost importance to get the work done before you go out and have fun. After all, college is about learning, and your parents aren’t paying tons of money for you to go to class hungover! College is supposed to be a time of change for freshmen. There is a learning curve, and oftentimes freshman get distracted by all of the fun opportunities that present themselves. In the two months I’ve been at Villanova, I’ve
made a bunch of friends. They all try to follow this model of getting the important stuff out of the way first. It is really the only effective way to approach college. I can’t wait until fall break, so I can see my family again. I miss my bed, and all of the relaxing influences that I now associate with home. College is awesome and all, but I’m ready for a vacation! The commitment to clubs, athletics and academics really fills your schedule. If you want to become an involved part of the Villanova community, you have to apply yourself and manage your time!

Summer School Helpers Eleven exemplary high schoolers – Joseph Criscione, Isaiah Edwards, Joseph Melendez, Coy Overton, Anthony Pascal, Brandon Rainone, Morgan Rooney, Joy Reiss St. Bernard, Karsten Scoggin, Samantha Uhlman and Christian Ventura – were recently recognized by the Deer Park School District for their dedicated work as summer school student helpers. Six of the honorees
were in attendance at a recent Board of Education meeting, where they were presented with certificates by Superintendent Eva J. Demyen. An arrangement with the New York State Department of Labor enabled the district to hire some eligible students with pay, but others worked solely as unpaid volunteers. All proved invaluable as aides and mentors for the approximately 60 children
enrolled in the summer program, run by teacher Phyllis Senia, which benefits special education students throughout the district. “Above and beyond is minimal compared to what these kids did,” said Frank Caliguiri, Deer Park’s assistant superintendent of pupil personnel services. “They really did the job of a working adult, taking responsibility for the children in the program.”

Walking For Alzheimers For the second year in a row, the Deer Park/ North Babylon girls swimming and diving team participated in the Walk To End Alzheimer’s, held by the Long Island chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association on September 20th at Belmont State Park in North Babylon.
The dedicated studentathletes – more than half of the 32-member high school team, currently 2-1 for the season – walked to support one of the team captains’ grandmothers who is currently afflicted with the disease. “The enthusiasm with which the team
approached this walk was truly moving,” said Deer Park’s Beth Kabaservice, the assistant coach. “We not only raised awareness but also funds for research. It was amazing to see the girls band together to support and comfort one another.”

SOFTBALL FIELD DEDICATION - On September 27th, the Deer Park Fire District dedicated and named its softball field “The Ex-Chief Oliver Dorsey Softball Field.” The field is located on the Deer Park Fire Departments Training Center grounds on Commack Road. Ollie has maintained the field since it was built about 12 years ago. Catherine’s Gold Award Project included the construction of a mobile book cart for the Huntington Hills Center for Health and Rehabilitation in Melville, which she collected and stocked. She also interviewed several veterans at the facility and submitted their videos and transcripts of their stories to the Veterans History Project, in addition to painting bathrooms at the center.
