I try to be patient through it all, telling myself it’s not their fault that they work for a completely inefficient organization. They simply have a job to do, as we all do. Flipping out never sped the process along. At the end of one of these service calls, which stretched over approximately three hours (yes, you read that correctly), the woman on the other end actually took the time out to thank me, saying my patience showed a lot about my character. Well, if dealing with customer service builds character, I think I’ve reached my quota for quite a while!

Customer service. It’s a thankless job, to be sure. But for those of us on the other side of the phone, it can be downright maddening. Over the course of the last several weeks, I have had the good fortune of being in touch with representatives from three major companies and one federal agency. As polite as the majority of them have been, there is simply no substitute for good oldfashioned efficiency. From poor line conditions that make it sound as though you’ve been patched through to another planet, to computer screens that keep
“freezing,” necessitating the dreaded May I put you on hold for 5-7 minutes? request, it does make you wonder how any issues are ever resolved. What always gets me is the directory, which instructs you to select your issue and what department you would like to speak with; yet, once you actually reach a human after “longer than normal wait times,” they never seem to know what your call is in reference to. And after repeated calls, and numerous notations on the account in question, it would stand to reason that you shouldn’t have to re-explain the entire problem from the beginning. And yet…

The students were not the only ones who returned to school this month at Saints Cyril and Methodius in Deer Park. With the start of the new school year, SSCM firstgraders shrieked with joy over the return of their class pet. Nibbles, a 1 year-old Roborovski Dwarf Hamster, came to SSCM at the start of the last school year, when she was just 5 weeks-old. Secondgraders joined in for a fun

A $718,000 grant from the Office of Children and Family Services (OCFS) will enable Family Residences and Essential Enterprises, Inc. (FREE) to serve middle and high school students in the Wyandanch School District. FREE will partner with the Family Life Center, a non-profit organization located in Wyandanch to operate the after-school program during the school year. The Advantage AfterSchool Program grant of $143,708 for each of the next five years will benefit more than 500 youth. The program started on September 15th, 2014. The Advantage AfterSchool Program will operate out of the Wyandanch Youth Center, a building owned by the Town of Babylon, located at 20 Andrews Avenue in Wyandanch. The program will operate Monday
through Friday from 3 to 7 p.m. Programming will include homework help, individual and group tutoring, basketball, robotics, Zumba, dance, SAT Prep, wrestling and karate. Applications are currently being accepted for the 2014-2015 school year. The program is being offered free of charge and parent’s are encouraged to sign up as soon as possible because space is limited. “I am absolutely thrilled that FREE will be working in the Wyandanch community and with the Family Life Center, said FREE’s Chief Executive Officer, Robert S. Budd. “We are equally thrilled to partner with OCFS and this unprecedented grant will enable us to serve one of Long Island’s neediest communities.” Our shared vision is for all students to have access to quality after-school programming in a safe and nurturing

The Villanova Rugby team is an organization that has gone through many twists and turns in its history. It was disbanded for a few years, only to come back stronger than ever. This year, the Villanova Rugby Football Club is on the road to a playoff finish. In our first three games, we played some of the best teams in the country. Notre Dame College and Towson are the two favorites to win it all this year. We played both of these teams, and although we lost, gave them a run for their money. This weekend, we are set to take on
Lock Haven. Under the guidance of four new coaches, the Rugby Team is finally gaining respect on campus. We practice five days a week in the hopes that we can win matches. It’s a violent sport, and many of our guys have gotten injured. There are no pads in rugby, so players face a huge risk. During a game, there are fifteen large men on the other team who want to hurt you. If you have the ball, you need to move. There is no stoppage in play. If the ball carrier goes down, a ruck is formed, and the teams fight for the ball. As the Tighthead Prop,
I’m expected to get in on all of the rucks. I do this willingly, because my teammate is often at the bottom of that pile. I look out for them, and they look out for me. Its a bond that we’ve developed on the Rugby Team. The other players have been like an extended family to me. I’m really liking this team, and I hope that I can play on it for the next four years. Villanova has really proven to be a good fit for me. I like that sense of brotherhood, and the Rugby Team is full of fun people.

Guest speaker Matthew Zachary, the founder of Stupid Cancer, addresses the crowd at Eisenhower Park earlier this week during the third annual Les Nelkin Pediatric Cancer Survivors’ Day, presented by the Survivors Facing Forward Program at the Steven and Alexandra Cohen Children’s Medical Center in New Hyde Park. Matthew, of Brooklyn, was a 21 yearold college senior and concert pianist when he lost use of his left hand. Tests were performed and he received a diagnosis of medulloblastoma. Eighteen years later, Matt continues to be a passionate advocate for young adults affected by cancer. More than 400 survivors of pediatric cancer were joined by their families and the staff
