On June 24th, 2012, just two days after Brittney’s high school graduation, she was killed by a drunk driver. This tragic incident has left her family and friends in a great deal of pain. Retrospect By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I’ve been reflecting on my high school days quite a bit lately. Maybe it’s the back to school fever in the air, the specter of autumn and homecoming celebrations on the horizon… or perhaps the fact that I have seen more fellow graduates and former teachers in the last several weeks than I have, well, probably over the last five years. Not that reminiscing is anything new for me, per se, but I suppose the more you reconnect, the more vibrant the faded memories become. What were once old snapshots and slightly dogeared pages of a yearbook are brought to life once again, conjuring happy thoughts of days gone by.
Sure, life has gone on since then and taken us with it in various directions; but there is still something about those good old high school days that brings a smile to the face, mine anyway. They say some of the best friendships are forged during those formative years and that, if you hold on to even a handful of them, you should consider yourself extremely lucky. I tend to agree. As much as we have all moved on – with some pursuing college degrees and careers, others settling down to start a family, and still others on a path all their own – there is a part of me that believes, deep down, we are all simply trying to reclaim that lost innocence of youth, of days when life seemed simpler
and possibilities stretched infinitely before us. Call me crazy, but who among us wouldn’t love to have just a bit of that back? Here’s to nostalgia… here’s to the good old days… here’s to taking a look in the mirror at who we’ve become, and realizing that, for better or worse, we all still resemble that 16 yearold sitting on the bleachers at Homecoming… or passing notes in the back of a classroom… or anxiously studying for exams wondering what the future years would bring. So here we are. No shame in looking back now and then to realize how we arrived at precisely this point, and celebrating the many wonderful memories made along the way.

Second and third graders read a beautiful book called My Son Christopher, by Maureen Crethan Santora, a non-fiction story of the
life of a young firefighter who died on 9/11, as told by his mother, the author. Older students had group discussions about this date in history that occurred before they were born and what the world was like during this tumultuous time. They prayed for all of the brave men and women committed to the life of a firefighter, military or police officer, all in the name of making our world a safer, better place. Others wrote about what peace looks like to them, how each of them can work to do good deeds for others and bring peace to the world in each of their own ways every day.

Kayakers had the opportunity to explore little seen areas of the Great South Bay including views of Cedar Island and sights of marine wildlife, such as snowy egrets and blue herons. Following the tour, kayakers were invited to the Cedar Beach Hut to celebrate the day’s festivities with a free lunch.

Fire Department’s 9/11 Essay Contest. Mendell’s essay discussed the ways that numerous people in the community came together to help each during the crisis on September 11th, 2001. Ellner and Zaman both wrote about the importance of remembering those who
lost their lives on 9/11. “I talked about how they made the ultimate sacrifice,” said Ellner. Each of the three students was awarded a certificate and gift card at the fire department’s annual 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony, held on September 12th.
