Whaling artifacts related to the history of Long Island are a fairly rare item today. When they do appear on the market, collectors fight hard to acquire them. Items specifically related to Greenport – one of Long Island’s active whaling ports during the 19th century – are even harder to find. Students and staff at Deer Park’s John Quincy Adams and May Moore primary schools participated in planting flags and other ceremonial events on September 11th, known as Patriot Day. The children, ranging from kindergarten through second grade, wore red, white and blue to commemorate the 13th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. “We wanted to observe the anniversary of September 11th with respect and reverence,” said JQA Principal Christine Criscione. “In addition to a moment of silence and ageappropriate lessons in the classroom, our PFC donated American flags so that each student could plant a flag on the school grounds to show patriotism.”

I am the queen of misunderstanding song lyrics. Which, for someone who has what I would call a fairly deep appreciation for words, is a bit odd. It just goes to show that the art of enunciation is going the way of cassette tapes and CDs – lost, down the drain, nonexistent. It’s funny, with the advent of apps like Pandora and Spotify, most lyrics are just a glance away. To say my interpretation of them
has been slightly off is putting it mildly. Pearl Jam? Forget it. Read the lyrics – pure poetry; listen to them – and you’re left a bit confused. Rap is another genre that I’ve always had a problem translating. While the delivery may be impressive, there are times when you question whether what you’re listening to is English or not. Listen to the censored version and, well, there goes most of the lyrics altogether. Country, while one of my least favorite choices
– please, no hate mail from the country lovers – seems to have it right when it comes to properly conveying the message at hand. If only the sound was a bit less… twangy. Ah, but that’s what makes the musical merrygo-round so fun, isn’t it? Styles for everyone, and a million different ways to access them. What did we do before all this technology? Oh right, we listened to the radio and misunderstood the lyrics. The good old days.

The Girls Athletic Program at St. John the Baptist Diocesan High School is proud to announce that Kate Gordon has been named as the Varsity Head Basketball Coach. As a native of East Islip, Kate was an outstanding basketball player earning many honors including All Long Island and All State while amassing over 1000 points and 1000 rebounds during her High School career. Kate had a stellar career playing at Hofstra
University from 1994-1998 earning the distinction of being the first Hofstra Basketball player to score 1000 points and grab 1000 rebounds in school history! In 2010, Hofstra recognized her accomplishments on and off the court by inducting her into their Athletic Hall of Fame. Kate comes to us with 15 years of coaching experience. She is a Director and Coach for the Long Island Knights AAU Basketball Program, the Director and Owner
of the Kate Gordon Basketball Camp and an active member of the local CYO program at St. Mary’s. Kate is also veteran educator, having taught in the Brentwood UFSD for 12 years. “Kate’s experience and expertise is a perfect fit for our strong tradition of girls’ basketball here at St. John’s. We look forward to the upcoming season and continuing our basketball tradition for years to come!” said Lorraine Bouklas, Girls Athletic Director.
School Supply Initiative Showing their strong support for education, the Waldbaum’s supermarket in Deer Park recently put together $8 bags of school supplies for its patrons to purchase as donations for needy families in the school district. The four-day initiative involved all Waldbaums stores across Nassau and Suffolk counties, giving community members the opportunity to benefit their local school districts. After collecting approximately $1,000 in donated school supplies, Waldbaum’s representative Joe Fabbio delivered the
supplies to Deer Park High School social worker Barbara Charity. “Waldbaum’s are always there for us with everything we do,” said Charity, who noted the many of the high school’s students have gained valuable employment experience working in the supermarket. Once the supplies are sorted, Charity and Deer Park’s team of social workers will decide how the supplies are distributed district wide. The donation process was facilitated by volunteer Debbie Leon, a member of the Deer Park Board
of Education’s Special Education Committee who also serves as treasurer of the Robert Frost Middle School PFC. “We are all parents and grandparents, we know what it’s like,” said Fabbio, who has served as store manager of the Deer Park Waldbaums for the past four years. “We are part of the community so we try to give back.” He credited the store’s loyal customers for their generosity. “They’re the ones who really did it,” he said.

are great and all, but nobody could replace my mom, dad and brother. They are the foundation to what will hopefully be my success. My mom and dad are the driving force in my life. I can’t wait until I see them during Parents’ Weekend, because somebody needs to do my laundry! Although I’m just kidding about the laundry, the idea that I miss the little things about home rings true. I miss my bed. I miss my car. I miss my old life. With that being said, I’m really liking the new life which I have formed here.
The kids on my floor are like family to me, and I’ve only been here a month. We are all in this together, and the communal sense of commitment has brought us closer together. I feel as though we know what each of us are going through, so bonds have become strengthened. The guys on my rugby team have been more than friendly as well. We are a team, and during games I can always expect them to have my back. I’m very excited to see what the rest of my four years of college have to offer.

Math Star Deer Park High School student and math star Aaron Zhang was recently named a semifinalist in the 60th Annual National Merit Scholarship Program. In a September 10th announcement, the senior was recognized for his outstanding test results in the 2013 Preliminary SAT/ National Merit Scholarship qualifying test, where he competed in an initial
screening against more than 1.4 million students from over 22,000 high schools and finished in the top 1 percent in the state. Zhang will be continue to compete to achieve the finalist level and vie for one of 7,600 National Merit Scholarships worth approximately $33 million, to be offered next spring by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation,
which has held this prestigious academic scholarship competition since 1955. The modest young man was surprised by his achievement. “I wasn’t sure if I would get it because the cut-off is so high,” Zhang said. “But it feels really good.” The senior is in his second year of membership in the school’s math team
(for which he now serves as captain), academic team and Science Olympiad team. As a junior, Zhang earned second place as part of a two-person Circuit Lab team in the New York State Science Olympiad regional competition. He also participates in other highlevel math competitions such as the Suffolk County Math Tournament, where he won first place last
year for the second year in a row. In his spare time, Zhang enjoys taking extracurricular computer science classes and conducting online computer research projects. “We will be hearing a lot about Aaron in the future,” said his proud principal, James Cummings.

Walk, Run & Ride For Autism for children and adults with autism and other developmental disabilities on Long Island, will be hosting its “DDI Walk, Run and Ride for Autism,” on Sunday, October 12th, at the Holtsville Ecology Center. The walk, run and motorcycle/classic car rally will help to promote community support for individuals with Autism and other developmental disabilities. “This event is all about coming together as a community and helping those who cannot help themselves,” said co-chair of the event Charley Hudson. “It is heartwarming to have talented individuals
enthusiastically lend themselves to help benefit thousand of fellow Long Islanders.” This year’s event Grand Marshals are seven extraordinary people who for the second year in a row, spent one week walking 128-miles from the Brooklyn Bridge to the Montauk Lighthouse in order to benefit DDI. Raising over $40,000 from both walks, Nathan Holmes, John Kenny, Morgan Zajkowski, Ellen McBurney, Peter Barker, Marita Rausch and Liam Kenny have proved to be worthy honorees.
