Throughout the summer, the instructors and camp counselors worked with the campers to create and practice on instruments made from re-purposed materials, such as art dowels and five-gallon paint buckets for drumming and plastic bottles filled with rice that served as clackers and maracas. Citing a camper who spent her time during the music program creating beautiful works of art, Mr. Licitra explained how music has a positive effect on everyone. He feels this is especially true of disabled children and young adults, like those at Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck, who might not otherwise be able to communicate their joy and enthusiasm. He encouraged campers to let their “inside voice out” and said that “every person is born with a song”

UNCF will carry on the National Achievement Scholarship Program’s name and legacy through the newly-designed UNCF Achievement Capstone Program, launching in the spring of 2016. UNCF Achievement Capstone Scholars will be nominated by their college or university presidents, chancellors, and deans based on outstanding academic performance, character, and demonstrated leadership honoring the legacy of the 1964 Civil Rights Act. Awardees may use the scholarship to pay off outstanding undergraduate educational costs at their current institutions, or to finance additional degrees, professional certifications, and continuing education programs. “UNCF is honored to
carry on the name and legacy of a prestigious program which began at a time in our nation where earning a college degree was a social and financial challenge for many African Americans,” said Dr. Michael L. Lomax, UNCF President and CEO. “We are humbled to take on the mantle of the UNCF Achievement Capstone Program, which not only allows UNCF to help students make it to and through college, but now also helps them after they have earned a college degree.” The National Achievement Scholarship Program is a privatelyfinanced academic competition established in 1964 specifically to provide recognition and college scholarships for Black American high school students. The program has been conducted by NMSC, a privately-financed, not-
for-profit organization that operates without government assistance, and also conducts the National Merit® Scholarship Program. The two programs have been conducted simultaneously, but administered and funded separately. NMSC is proud to partner with UNCF, the nation’s largest and most effective minority education organization, to establish the UNCF Achievement Capstone Program. For more than 70 years, UNCF has worked to get students to and through college, and awards more than $100 million in scholarships annually. This program will further expand UNCF’s reach to AfricanAmerican students across the country who will benefit from the honor, recognition, and financial assistance accompanying these awards.
In the half century since the National Achievement Scholarship Program was created, more than four million Black Americans have entered the program, and approximately 228,000 have received program recognition. Of those honored, more than 34,000 of the most outstanding participants were chosen to receive Achievement Scholarship® awards worth about $108 million. Currently, about 3,200 of these young men and women are undergraduates at 300 colleges and universities across the nation. Since the National Achievement Scholarship Program’s funds will be redirected to provide awards for college graduates, Black American high school students will no longer have the opportunity to enter the National Achievement Scholarship
Program. However, they can still compete for awards when they enter the National Merit Scholarship Program, and they may be eligible to receive awards from UNCF under this new program once they graduate from college. “The history and accomplishments of the National Achievement Scholarship Program are great, and NMSC is proud of the program’s 51 successful years,” said Mr. Timothy E. McGuire, NMSC President and CEO. “Through its partnership with UNCF, NMSC looks forward to the new direction of the National Achievement Scholarship Program and its funding of awards for high-achieving, underrepresented college graduates in the newly-created UNCF Achievement Capstone Program.”

Education Laws Explained At the Deer Park School District’s recent annual Superintendent’s Conference Day, speakers delved into revised New York State regulations for both English as a New Language and the Annual Professional Performance Review. Kicking off the morning’s presentations, Gina Palasciano, the district’s curriculum associate for world languages and ENL, introduced Dr. Maria Dove, an author and professor at Molloy College. Dove explained that in the past, ENL –formerly known as ESL, or English as a Second Language – consisted of standalone programs, with a segregated population and specialized ESL curriculum. The new format features collaborative teacher teams of ESOL and content teachers, offering integrated instructional services to an integrated student population, for a curriculum that combines
content and language. “The new ENL program is research-based and consists of two components: a content area, with instructional component in English, and an Englishlanguage developmental component,” she said. Dove stressed the need to develop collaborative teaching teams, and demonstrated classroom models of co-teaching. “You can’t do this work alone,” she told the assembled teachers. Superintendent of Schools Eva J. Demyen began by introducing numerous new directors and teachers, using OMI’s No. 1 hit song “Cheerleader” to illustrate her credo of supporting and developing her staff. “We are cheerleaders for each other,” she told them. Demyen’s presentation focused on discussing new regulations for the state’s APPR, which has moved from three components to just two:
student performance and observation. One of the main elements of the new APPR is that principals and teachers of students in courses that culminate in state exams will receive state-provided growth scores, while those with students in courses that don’t culminate in a state exam will utilize SLOs, or student learning objectives, to set growth targets that show at least one year of expected growth. The targets, process and assessments that are used will be approved by the state. Citing the short timetable as an impediment, Demyen said that the district would apply for an APPR waiver in October; it can then apply for a second waiver next March. “We want to do this right – efficiently and educationally sound,” said Demyen. “So we will do it over time, and start fresh next year.”
Keeping Tabs on SADD In an annual effort, Deer Park High School’s Students Against Destructive Decisions Club and other supportive students join forces to collect soda can tabs for Shriners Hospitals for Children - Philadelphia. This year, the school took the lead in donating the most tabs of any organization, with 18.775 kilograms of tabs. After collection, the aluminum tabs are recycled for cash,
with the proceeds funding programs that directly benefit children. “Our grand total from collecting tabs over the years is $68,927.35 and growing,” said Shriners Hospital representative Stephanie Byrwa. “We are able to use the tabs to raise money for important machines, tools and equipment that will provide a better quality of life for our patients.” The Shriners Hospitals
for Children nonprofit network, which operates more than 20 facilities across North America, is dedicated to improving the lives of children by providing pediatric specialty care, innovative research and outstanding medical teaching programs for medical professionals. “Who thought a lowly soda tab could do such much good?” said club adviser Janet Werner.

The Brittney Walsh Memorial Fund, a nonprofit organization established to honor the memory of Brittney Walsh, is holding its 3rd Annual Bowling Fundraiser at Farmingdale Lanes on October 24th. On June 24th, 2012, just two days after Brittney’s high school graduation, she was killed by a drunk driver. This tragic incident has left her family and friends in a great deal of pain. Long Islanders as a whole have expressed their grief, shock and sympathy. The Brittney Walsh Memorial Fund has been designed to assist children just like Brittney - young people who excel in academics, push themselves to give 100% in sports and are active in school clubs. The goal is to provide three high school seniors each year
with scholarships to help make their futures a little brighter. In the 18 years of her life, Brittney touched the hearts of so many people with her love, smile and generosity. With your help, she can continue to do so. The family is asking businesses for their support in this fundraising endeavor. The following are ways to donate to this cause: • Chinese Auction: Any gift certificates or merchandise from your store • Lane Sponsor: Each full lane sells for $100; half lane for $50; quarter lane for $25 • Cash Donations: Will be directly deposited in to the Memorial Fund The Brittney Walsh Memorial Fund is

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone announced today that more than 3,500 runners from twenty five states and four countries participated in the Inaugural Suffolk County Marathon & Half Marathon to Support Our Veterans. All net proceeds generated from the event will go directly to veteran service organizations in Suffolk County. The male and female winner of the full Marathon were: Chau Zhou, NYC2:46:50, Caroline Levesque, Rhode Island-3:12:02. The wheelchair division winner: Peter Hawkins, Malverne-2:13 The male and female winner of the half marathon were: Anthony Famiglietti, North Carolina-1:07:35, Pamela O’Sullivan, Babylon-1:24:02.

Game Farm Fall Happenings The Long Island Game Farm will be going into hibernation on Tuesday, October 13th, but the animals aren’t going anywhere just yet. Instead, the zoo has increased its Facebook coupon to $4 off admission and has updated its fall hours and show schedule for the remainder of the season. At the largest combined Children’s Zoo and Wildlife Park on Long Island, guests can see hundreds of animals and get up close and personal with some of their favorite exotic critters. Visitors to the free Leapin’ Lemur Tour at Lemur Circle will have the opportunity to learn about these creatures, which hail from the African subcontinent. Each day, an animal expert from the Game Farm will discuss the lemurs’ habitat, what they eat and how they communicate. Park attendees are also invited to visit the Zebra, Cougar and Giraffe exhibits to learn some fun facts about these furry friends. Guests can additionally receive a one-on-one Camel Encounter with a
zookeeper and the park’s very own camels, Sandy and Sahara. During this event, guests can feed the camels a healthy snack and take photos with them. The Animal Education staff will be there to answer any questions and to share interesting facts about these “ships of the desert.” Tickets can be purchased at the Encounter or from the souvenir stand for $5. Deadline to Apply The Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY) has announced an October 2nd, application deadline for tuition reimbursement through their historic educational initiative, the Higher Education Learning Plan (HELP). This statewide community college tuition reimbursement program is geared towards recruiting and retaining volunteer firefighters
throughout New York State. “The FASNY HELP program has benefitted hundreds of dedicated firefighters serving communities across the State. In addition to helping meet the staffing needs of local departments, a better educated firefighter is simply a better firefighter. For the student volunteers and the fire departments, this is the very definition
of a ‘win-win’ situation,” said FASNY President Robert McConville. Under FASNY HELP, any active volunteer firefighter, in good standing, and who hasn’t already achieved a college degree is eligible for up to 100% tuition reimbursement. The reimbursement is in exchange for maintaining good grades and fulfilling service requirements in one of New York’s volunteer fire companies.
