eer Park Girl Scout Lexie Donnelly, of Troop 1609, organized a free Summer Soccer Camp for younger players as part of her Gold Award project. Lexie recruited the help of friends on the Deer Park Girls Varsity team, including fellow Girl Scout Daniela Zabatino. The girls ran a week-long soccer skills and training camp for girls in grades 2-5. They met at Fireman’s field and were provided with water and snacks.

Many times it is to a homeowner’s advantage to open the drapes and let sunlight shine in. Still, for shift workers, parents of young children who need to nap or just those who have south- or west-facing windows that make rooms overly warm, darkening the room is necessary at certain times of the day. Flu Facts: • The flu is caused by a virus called influenza • Flu is a contagious illness that is spread in droplets made by people when they talk, sneeze or cough. These droplets can then infect another person when they inhale them. • Less commonly, a person might also get flu by touching an object that has the flu virus on it and then touching their own mouth, eyes or nose. • Once infected, you may pass the virus to others even about a day before you begin to have symptoms yourself. • Flu can cause a mild to severe illness and even death especially in the very young or old, pregnant woman or people with other medical illnesses (i.e.: asthma, diabetes) • The best way to prevent the flu is by getting a flu vaccine each year.

Q: What else can I do to prevent getting or spreading the flu? A: Here are some things you can do: • Get vaccinated! Ask your friends to get vaccinated. • Cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue and then throw the tissue in the garbage. • Stay away from people who are sick. • Wash your hands often with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. • If someone in the house is sick, if possible, try to keep them in a separate area. • Keep surfaces like tables, sinks, counters and toys clean by wiping them down with a household disinfectant (follow instructions on the label).

As school is now in full swing, it is time for many high school seniors to shift their minds into gear; college gear that is. Now is the most crucial point in any high schoolers career. Essays should be close to finalized, the Common App should be filled out, standardized testing should be in order and a list of schools should be in hand. If you are a little behind in this process, do not fret. The college process is truly daunting, but you have an “ace up your sleeve.” Your guidance counselor is a trained expert and is there to simply guide you. Take advantage of them! Getting into a great

university is the culmination of your work this far. This means that it is what you have been working for since day one. If you have someone that is well versed in something you are not, it just makes sense to sit down and talk with them. They can pass valuable insight to you that would have otherwise gone unknown. Your guidance counselor is also given the task of writing a recommendation letter for you, so the more interaction you have, the better. You undoubtably want to stand out in the mind of your counselor so he or she feels compelled to write a unique essay.

Tell your guidance counselor about your extracurricular activities, hopes and goals. Tell them anything that you think sets you apart from the crowd. Feel free to ask them whatever questions you have because it’s what they are paid to do. Choosing a college will certainly be the biggest decision you’ve made this far, so it goes without saying to proceed with both caution and ferocity. Make the most out of your final year of high school, make the most out of your application and don’t forget to make the most out of your guidance counselor.

Babylon Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer and the Babylon Town Board recently declared September 3rd, Live Like Ron Day in the Town of Babylon in honor of the late Ron Dieumegard, a longtime resident who was known for his volunteer work and desire to help others. Common Core A Hot Topic New York’s Common Core State Standards have been a hot topic among educators since being adopted in 2010, and the transition to these instructional standards was at the forefront at the Deer Park School District’s annual Superintendent’s Day conference in September. “All of us in New York

State are in the same boat,” said Superintendent Eva Demyen, noting the challenges involved in the rushed transition to the Common Core, but as she explained to her fellow educators, the universal application of the Core’s principles is extremely important for the future of the district’s students and teachers alike.

“Math and English language arts are the basic tools for all other disciplines,” declared Demyen. “The other disciplines all rely on them for proper implementation.” She emphasized that all teachers need to be familiar with the Common Core shifts, no matter what they teach – from technology

to social studies. “It’s very important that it’s across the board,” she said. “We must embrace the Core in every discipline, not just ELA and math, and it has to be evident in every lesson we teach.” Highlighting a success of the Core shifts, Demyen cited the inspiring work of five teachers from John F. Kennedy Intermediate

School – Rosanne Alfieri, Lauren Chipkin, Alexis Ghiraldi, Christine MacQuarrie and Tara Wellbrock – who were recently featured in a New York State Education Department video segment called “Teaching Is the Core.” The footage of their Core-aligned lessons, soon to be viewable on the state’s EngageNY

website, will be used to aid teachers across New York in shifting their curricula to better reflect the goals inherent in the Common Core Standards and help ensure the improvement of student achievement. “You are the Core,” Demyen told the educators. “Don’t ever forget it.”

Sean served fourteen months in Iraq as a soldier in the United States Army and returned home with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. On New Year’s Eve 2011, Sean was struck by a car while crossing East Main Street in Babylon and died from his injuries four days later. Following Sean’s death, Marie approached the Babylon Town Board with her story and her desire to help others understand what those who have PTSD go through. Babylon Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer and Councilman Tom Donnelly have announced that the Town of Babylon will be hosting the Sean’s Hope workshop, which is a series of free seminars to promote awareness about Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and educate friends and family members of those who are experiencing symptoms. Each seminar will revolve around a different topic of discussion and will feature different guest speakers. The program will discuss ways to recognize PTSD symptoms related to the experiences of veterans and members of the armed forces, Superstorm Sandy survivors and victims of crime and domestic abuse. “From our proud service members to the residents affected by Superstorm Sandy, many of our friends, family members and neighbors are fighting a silent battle within themselves as a result of a traumatic or lifethreatening experience,” said Supervisor Schaffer. “I strongly encourage those who know someone struggling with PTSD to attend these seminars so that we can gain a better understanding of what they’re going through and help them the best we can.” The eight week workshop will start on September 18th and will be held every Wednesday through November 6th. The first six seminars will be held at the Spangle Drive Senior Center in North Babylon from 7 to 8 p.m., with the final two nights at Tanner Park Senior Center in Copiague.
