Crunched By Tech By: Jamie Lynn Ryan In an age where technology has overtaken society, it is only natural to pause periodically and wonder, at what cost? These days, most everything can be communicated via text, various messenger apps, social networks and emoticons, with little reserved for good oldfashioned person-to-person contact. As the masses jump on the latest smartphones and tablets the moment they’re unveiled, it is hard not to think how did we manage to exist before? Personally, I did not own a cell phone until the later college years, if even then. Prior to that, it was
payphones and asking the teacher for a pass to the Main Office to call home in an emergency. Nowadays, walk into any elementary school and smartphones are just as common a trend as the latest sneakers and accessories. What’s wrong with this picture? Plenty. First off, no eight year-old needs a smartphone. An old, hand-me-down standard cell phone in case of emergencies? Perhaps. And once you move on to middle school and high school, the potential for cheating, texting during class and surfing the web instead of paying attention to the lesson at hand skyrockets. I don’t care
what disciplinary actions are set in place; the integrity of the classroom immediately declines with each cell phone that enters. This is not to say that those in college or the workforce are any better equipped to balance the technology they “have to have” with a little thing called reality. No, we are just as likely to send 47 text messages rather than have a phone conversation, to use a cute little smiley face in favor of typing an entire word, to keep in touch via Facebook rather than schedule a lunch date... That said, I am eagerly awaiting the arrival of my newly pre-ordered iPhone 6 :)

More than four thousand Long Islanders are expected to join the American Heart Association’s Long Island Heart Walk on Sunday, September 21st to raise funds to fight heart disease and stroke, America’s No. 1 and No. 4 killers,. The annual event begins at 8:30 a.m. at Jones Beach, Field 5, in Wantagh. The non-competitive, three-mile walk includes teams of employees from local companies, along with friends and family members of all ages. “For every hour of brisk walking, life expectancy may increase for some adults by two hours,” said Ed Blaskey, TD Bank’s Market President for Suburban NY and Long Island and Chairman of the 2014 Long Island Heart Walk. “I look forward to working with Executive Leaders across Long Island to help raise awareness and funds for the American Heart Association to continue its mission to build healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke.” Heart Walk participants will experience three “communities” that feature relevant resources and activities. This year’s Long Island Heart Walk will once again feature interactive and compelling lifechanging information and activities including a Kidz Zone-featuring face painting, caricatures, magician, craft, and games for kids and

Across the Deer Park School District, students returned to classes September 3rd, refreshed and ready to resume their educational careers at Deer Park High School, Robert Frost Middle School, John F. Kennedy Intermediate
School and John Quincy Adams and May Moore primary schools. For many, the day was a thrilling whirlwind of new buildings, new buses and new classmates. “The students and staff arrived with their
batteries recharged from a well-deserved summer vacation,” said JFK Principal Susan Bonner. “We had a terrific first day of school and are confident JFK will have another banner year.”

Long Island Heart Walk Set
Each year, as fall approaches, I catch myself reflecting upon the past year. 2014 was a huge one for me, as it marked the beginning of the next chapter in my academic career. This year, I started at Villanova University. From what I can tell, Villanova is the right place for me. I’ve already gotten pretty involved, and I feel very welcome here. From the renowned orientation process, I was able to garner an understanding of the qualities that Villanova was founded upon - Caritas, Veritas, Unitas. These Latin words translate to mean Charity, Truth and Unity.
For nearly two centuries, Villanova has been producing bright minds using those three values. I’m proud to say that I have the opportunity to experience everything this university has to offer. As important as the transition to school was for me, this year wasn’t all about college. Over the summer, I strengthened bonds with friends and family. I’ve never felt tighter with my coworkers, because they finally stopped viewing me as a kid. My years on Fire Island have afforded me many things, including new employment opportunities and a unique outlook on life.
A few months ago, I graduated high school. This was a big marker in my life. My grandfather passed away in August. He was very important to me, and I think about him all the time. I went to the National Championships for Rowing this year. As the culmination of four years of hard work, it was something I will be forever proud of. On a less personal note, my community grew. We welcomed new neighbors, businesses and opportunities. In just a few short months, my life has changed dramatically. I guess you can say it has been a big year.

Special Fundraiser On September 7th, Gabby (11), Dommi (10), Amanda (11), Megan (7) and Luke (5) had a lemonade sale to raise money to donate for Mikey’s seizure dog. The children spent five hours selling lemonade knowing that, with every car that stopped, it was a little closer to MJ getting his seizure dog. It is nice to see children wanting to help another child so much. They raised close to $130 and
will be donating via MJ’s Gofundme. Thank you to all who stopped, whether it was because you were passing by or saw it posted on Facebook and made a special trip just to donate, or just opted to make a donation. Mikey (MJ) is a 6 yearold who suffers from a rare condition called Arnold Chiari Malformation, a condition that affects the brain. MJ suffers daily from seizures and was told
by doctors that he should have a seizure dog. Unfortunately, insurance does not cover it. He’s a great boy who loves to have fun, but he is limited because he gets so many seizures.
