Back To Reality By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Back to school. Back to schedules. Back to routines. Back from vacation. Back to reality. And so it begins. That slow, tedious transition into all things Autumn. That gradual acceptance of pumpkin spice and flowering mums and long sleeves and boots, and the reluctant closing of pools and packing away of bathing suits and flip flops. Say it ain’t so. Ah, but here it is. May as well embrace it. And while you’re sitting on a
park bench enjoying the cool crisp air (shameless plug alert), take a look at our new Autumn issue of Seasons Magazine for a refresher course on all that Long Island has to offer, no matter the time of year. Reunion Celebrated of course Babylon, to attend this stellar event. Classmates were treated to an elegant evening under the stars with dinner, drinks and wonderful music. This event also served as a fund raiser for the BHS Class of 1974 Scholarship Fund which was created 10 years ago to remember and honor the life of Pat Winter Giangregorio. This scholarship has been renamed to the Babylon High School Class of 1974 Memorial Scholarship to
remember and honor the lives of all BHS Classmates in memoriam. Peter Seitz, one of the reunion organizers announced over $4000 was raised to sustain future BHS Class of 1974 Memorial Scholarships. Instructive Orientation On a warm Wednesday morning, Deer Park High School welcomed its Class of 2018 for the first time, smoothing their transition via the school’s annual freshman orientation on August 27th. The event proved helpful and instructive, providing the incoming ninth-graders with a sense of the building’s layout and a wealth of information on topics such as student activities, graduation requirements
and guidance counseling. At the end of the program, new freshmen found their lockers and took a tour of the building, guided by older students. “One of the nicest aspects of freshman orientation is the number of upperclassmen who volunteer their time to help the freshmen become acclimated to the building,” said James Cummings, the high school’s principal. “It speaks to the respect that the students have for
their school, and that they have a vested interest in the new students being successful.” In speaking to his new charges, Cummings emphasized getting involved right off the bat, encouraging them to pursue activities, clubs and sports. “Students who are active members of their school community are more successful academically,” he said.
On August 27th, the Captree Star 3 charter fishing boat based at Captree State Park hosted a fishing trip for Wounded Warriors and their families. Over 100 Wounded Warriors and their families were onboard. The trip was made possible through the
generosity of Charlie Buser and Patricia Gillen Buser, the owners and Captains of the Captree Star 3, and Capt Charlie’s FDNY breathren. “How lucky are we to have all our arms and legs, and fingers and toes,” said Charlie Buser. “You see
these people coming back from war all banged up. What can we do to help out just a little bit? We have a vehicle and we chose to use it.” Food and beverages for the trip were also supplied by members of the FDNY and the Marine Corps.
