The 2016-2017 school year marks the 50th year milestone in the history of St. John the Baptist Diocesan High School. The school was the first of four co-ed diocesan high schools dedicated on September 8th, 1966 by the then Bishop of Rockville Centre, Walter Kellenberg. During this school year, St. John’s will host a variety of events to celebrate its history including the unveiling of a new library and technology center, an Athletic Hall of Fame Induction on October 9th, an Evening in Red and White Celebration on
November 19th, and an outdoor mass to start the school year. The opening of school mass will be held on September 9th and will be celebrated by the school’s chaplain, Fr. Robert Ketchum and concelebrated with St. John’s graduate and Vicar for the diocese, Bishop Robert Brennan. Several members of the Class of 1970, St. John’s first graduating class, are expected to be in attendance, along with the Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Kathleen Walsh, former administrators, and several of the religious

sisters and former chaplains who worked at St. John’s over its 50 year history. At the mass, they will join the school community in welcoming the freshman class, the newest members of the school, who are to become the 50th graduating class, the Class of 2020, in just four short years. “We are thrilled to begin this school year with a 50th anniversary celebration of rededication and prayer. It will be a great year of remembrance of our history and appreciation for our school community that continues to bring life to many!” stated Principal Nan Doherty.

Saratoga Springs, home of the world-famous race course, the sprawling Adirondack Mountains… and utter tranquility. My family and I have been going to Saratoga for the better part of my life each summer, our little “home away from home” where the air is fresher, the people are friendlier and the city welcomes you as one of its own. Primarily a “summer town,” Saratoga is perhaps best known for its thoroughbred racing; but that is certainly only a small aspect of what it has to offer. Simple wandering down Broadway, the main strip of town, will afford you
endless hours of browsing in the quaint shops, eating at the dozens of restaurants and bars, wandering through the two beautiful parks and gawking at the gorgeous multi-million dollar homes. If you wander slightly off the beaten path, you will find the National Racing Museum, the National Dance Museum and the grounds of Yaddo Gardens, an artists’ retreat housing some of the most beautiful and exotic plants within its gates. Skidmore College calls Saratoga home as well, as it cultivates the next generation of artists and, with them, the artistic vibe which reverberates throughout the city. The Saratoga Performing Arts Center, located within the cozy confines of Saratoga State Park, welcomes cultural performances of all genres
throughout the summer, from the NYC Ballet to the Philadelphia Orchestra to some of the most popular national musical acts. Another staple of the schedule is the annual Jazz Festival, a two-day event which brings together thousands of people on the lawn to picnic and enjoy a common love. Of course, Saratoga Springs has plenty to offer throughout the year; but there is something about those late summer weekends, that mixture of sunshine and slight chill in the air, the tailend of racing season and the beginning of a new college year, which seems like the best of all worlds. Indeed, how happy I am that Saratoga has become a part of my world, at least for a brief moment each summer.

Booster Club Golf Outing
On Thursday, July 21st, the Babylon Athletic Booster Club held its second annual golf outing at the Bergen Point Golf Club. Over 74 golfers participated in this year’s event. All the monies raised go to support the student athletes in the Babylon sports programs. Prizes were awarded for top golfers and the winning foursome. Contests included closest to the keg and beat the pro. Landing a 9 inches from the Second Hole kept one golfer from becoming a hole in one car
winner as well The event culminated with the dinner event and the presentation of the Ernie Busch Scholarship award to two Babylon Graduates heading off to college. This year’s winners were Megan Neary and Brian Boehm. The winners each received scholarship money to help defray the costs of their college expenses. Over the past few years the Booster Club has been able to purchase equipment for all the sports teams including two Scoreboards
for Field Hockey, Baseball and Softball, an upgrade to Basketball Scoreboard, Gymnastic Mats, Chairs for Wrestling, Basketball and Volleyball, Lacrosse and Field Hockey Nets, Football Chute, Outdoor Rolling Scorer’s table and a baseball fence. Finding New Goals As summer came to a close, incoming sixthgraders at Deer Park’s Robert Frost Middle School gathered for orientation day on August 25th. Helpful guidance counselors and members of Frost’s National Junior Honor Society worked with groups of the younger students, helping to give them a head start in their new school and learn what
Frost has to offer. Incoming sixth-grader Allison Garcia came away from the orientation with a strong resolve to make new friends during the school year. Her friend Keziah Pierre-Louis also thought the orientation was fun and gave her new goals. “Robert Frost is a great school,” she said. “I want to try out for step squad and join clubs.”
Another new student, Karly Haskins, said, “I was actually nervous at first, but when I saw my friends and the guidance counselors, I realized this is going to be the best year ever and I can’t wait to start.” “It was great to see the sixth-graders’ enthusiasm during the orientation,” added Associate Principal Gary Ramonetti.

Par for the Course For the past 47 years, members of the Fuoco family have come together to organize and host the Annual Fuoco Memorial Golf Feastival, benefitting Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck. This year’s event, which is once again being held at the Bellport Country Club, is scheduled to take place on Thursday, September 15th. Located on the east end of Long Island, Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck is a place of summer and weekend respite for children and young adults ages six to 21 with physical and developmental special needs. Its mission is to provide campers with a welcoming and encouraging environment inclusive of medical care, along with activities such as swimming, singing, campfires and tending to an animal farm, all while developing invaluable lifelong friendships that they may otherwise never have the opportunity to enjoy. Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck’s most popular sessions are over the summer, but it
does offer fall and spring sessions as well. Fuoco Golf Feastival Chairman Steve Fuoco, President of the Camp PaQua-Tuck Patrons Group, along with two of his children, Katy Fuoco-Hill and Jimmy Fuoco, assist in running key operations of the tournament, along with an active committee of family, fellow Rotarians and friends. The Fuoco family’s longstanding connection with Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck began with Steve’s sister, Beth Ann Fuoco-Santos’, attendance at the camp for many years. To this day, the Fuoco family continues to be involved with the camp, annually organizing the Memorial Golf Feastival, which has raised nearly $1.5 million in support of the camp. This year’s honorees are the partners of the law firm Rizzi, Schwarz and Tarakas, LLP, who have been supporters of the Fuoco Memorial Golf Feastival for many years

Partnership Promotes Resiliency
The Child Care Council of Suffolk (CCCS) has partnered with the Association for Mental Health & Wellness to offer a series of Suffolk Action for Empowering Resiliency (SAFER) workshops developed to promote resiliency in children and to aid early care professionals in maintaining a healthy environment for those affected by Superstorm Sandy and/or other early childhood trauma. These trainings promote social-emotional health for infants, toddlers and preschoolers through outreach to early care and learning professionals, curriculum
implementation and ongoing support services. More than 70 early care professionals and others recently participated in a SAFER conference titled “Promoting Resilience in Young Children,” presented by Tammy Goddard from the Devereux Center for Resilient Children. “After taking this training, I now realize how important it is to reflect and understand where the children in my program are coming from and how it may affect their time with me,” described one early care professional. “Thanks to this valuable training offered by CCCS, I learned how to start conversations
with the children about their stressors, and I can effectively help them to ‘bounce back’.” The SAFER program is offered under the leadership of the Child Care Council of Suffolk and funded through the New York State Office of Children and Family Services (OCFS) Superstorm Sandy Block Grant. At this year’s Marcum Workplace Challenge, employees from Catholic Health Services (CHS) once again rose to the occasion, with winning results. Team CHS took 1st place among coed teams for the Healthcare Challenge and earned 2nd place out of all 46 coed teams, with a time of 1:40:31. In addition, Stephanie Bazan, of CHS’s Mercy Medical Center, placed within the top 5 women runners, at 22 minutes and 48 seconds. Cathy Magone, also from Mercy, earned the 4th spot in the Women’s Top Dog category, coming in at 43:10. Collectively, with a time of 2:25:59,
CHS’s female competitors secured a place in the top 20 women’s teams participating in the event, while CHS’s male runners clocked 2:13:32, placing them 52nd among the men’s teams. The annual Marcum Workplace Challenge is a 3.5-mile run/walk for charity, combined with camaraderie and the competitive spirit. For more than a decade, thousands of Long Islanders have come together to participate in the high-profile event held at Jones Beach. Beneficiaries include the Long Island Children’s Museum, Children’s Medical Fund of New York and Long Island Cares,
Inc.–the Harry Chapin Food Bank.

you 23 times more likely than normal to be in a car crash. • Among drivers between the ages of 18 and 20 involved in car accidents in the United States, 13 percent admitted to texting or talking on their phones at the times of their crashes. • The National Safety Council reports that cell phone use while driving leads to around 1 .6 million crashes each year, with nearly 330,000 injuries occurring from such accidents. • Cell phone usage while driving can delay a driver’s reaction time as much as having a blood alcohol concentration at
the legal limit. Although the majority of drivers support a ban on texting while driving, many still continue to do it. The single best way to prevent driving accidents and fatalities related to mobile phone usage is to put the phone down. Consider the following suggestions to help you avoid looking at your phone while behind the wheel: • Keep your phone in a purse or in a bag in the back seat so that it is not readily accessible while driving. Many cars now have Bluetooth-enabled handsfree dialing and calling, so you do not need to have the phone
