The 3rd Annual White Water Sportfish Challenge will be held at Star Island Yacht Club. The fourday event kicks off with the Captain’s Meeting & BBQ on September 5th at 7:30 p.m. and fishing on September 6th and 7th from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days, and an awards ceremony and brunch on September 8th from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. White Water Marine and Star Island Yacht Club have teamed up to bring the outboard motor sport fisherman a unique tournament experience with two great days of world-class fishing. Prizes will be offered for an Offshore Champion, an Inshore Champion and a prize for each of the four fish categories: tuna, shark (mako and thresher), bass and blue fish. Over $30,000 in cash and prizes are up for grabs, including a Captain’s Raffle. The entry fee is $975 per boat, which includes four angler bracelets and admittance to the Captain’s Meeting and brunch. Additional bracelets may be purchased for $80 each. Transient rates are $2.50 per foot plus $15 per day for utilities (water, electric and cable TV), payable in advance. Dockage is available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck announced that it is once again offering its fall weekend respite program, transforming the 60-plusyear-old camp into a yearround destination for children and young adults with disabilities. Children and young
adults up to the age of 21 arrive on Friday evening and leave on Sunday afternoon. There is a new theme each weekend. Campers can participate in various activities, including baking, arts and crafts, games, and watching movies.

The weekends available are as follows: September 13th through 15th, 2013; October 4th through 6th, 2013; November 22nd through 24th, 2013; and December 13th through 15th, 2013. The cost of each weekend (Friday to Sunday) is $350. The camp requires a $50 deposit per session which is non-refundable unless registration is canceled 30 days prior to the session. “We are excited to bring back this wonderful program,” said Bridget Costello, Director, Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck. “This gives children and young adults the opportunity to be themselves, and the parents a chance to
relax while their sons and daughters are being taken care of.” Check-in for campers is at 8 p.m. on Friday and check-out is at 3 p.m. on Sunday. Because the resources are packed away until the summer, campers are required to bring their own sheets, blankets, pillows, towels, and toiletries. Up to 20 campers will be admitted for each weekend. Hospice Care Network is currently seeking NY State Licensed Cosmetologists to volunteer their time. As a volunteer, you would provide haircuts for people in the community who are facing life limiting illnesses. This is an invaluable service for our clients and one which is in high demand! Volunteers are asked to provide 2-4 haircuts per month. Hospice provides orientation sessions to our organization as well as ongoing support and mentorship. Dose Of Nostalgia By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I haven’t watched the MTV Video Music Awards since … oh, probably around the time *NSYNC was still a certified group. So when word leaked out that they would be reuniting at this year’s ceremony in honor of Justin Timberlake receiving the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, well, you can imagine the hysteria which erupted among their longtime fans. In the days leading up to the big broadcast, you couldn’t escape the rumor mill – on TV, radio,
newspapers and especially social media – all buzzing with the possibility of a few moments of nostalgia. Twenty and thirtysomethings were instantly transported back to their glory days – back when music was more about the melody than what the artist was (or wasn’t, as the case may be) wearing, the staging, the choreography and all that nonsense. Sure, *NSYNC may not be every musical connoisseur’s idea of a deep, meaningful musical experience – but considering some of what is out there on the charts
today, it’s certainly done a decent job of standing the test of time. And so we tuned in. And we waited. We were shocked by the spectacle of Lady Gaga, disgusted by the antics of Miley Cyrus, and generally perplexed by the direction music has gone in the last ten years. It was quite the hour to endure, to say the least. But then, at long last, there it was. 110 seconds of pure joy. Surrounded by about two hours of, well, the sort of indescribable train wreck that the MTV VMA’s has become. A brief reunion. But well worth the wait.

The 51st Annual Good Samaritan Ball, An Evening At The Copacabana will be held on Friday, September 27th, at 7 p.m. to midnight at Crest Hollow Country Club. The 2013 Gala Honorees are long-time West Islip residents Lorraine and John Pace, well known throughout the region for their business, civic and philanthropic work. The Ball will support The Good Samaritan Hospital Foundation, with proceeds to benefit the Cancer Center at Good Samaritan Hospital. Good Samaritan has made a significant commitment to caring for the region’s cancer patients through the establishment of its multidisciplinary, comprehensive Cancer Center, where all of the pieces are in place to provide excellence in cancer prevention,
diagnosis and treatment. Staffed by expert physicians, skilled and compassionate nurses, and allied health professionals, Good Samaritan’s patients’ outcomes are often equivalent or superior to those reported by major cancer centers around the country. This stellar black tie affair includes cocktails, dinner and dancing. The Ball gives the hospital’s dedicated supporters an occasion to celebrate the achievements of the past year. It also provides an opportunity for hospital friends to show their support for Good Samaritan’s commitment to excellence in service to those in need. For the ninth consecutive year, Saddle Rock Ranch, a service of Family Residences and Essential Enterprises, Inc. (FREE) is serving as a training site for Special Olympics New York Equestrian athletes. Every year this training event is facilitated by PATHcertified instructors and several teenage volunteers. The site received double the amount of annual registrations this year. This has made the support of these local volunteers more critical than ever – and they have risen to meet the challenge. Saddle Rock Ranch has been hosting Special Olympics New York equestrian training since 2005. For the first few years the nearly 16-acre ranch has accommodated 25 – 30 riders in four
weekly sessions each season. “This year our registration exploded,” explained Julie Dell’Aira, Therapeutic Riding Program Coordinator. “We had 65 registrants and added ten sessions to our typical schedule. Since training takes place in the summer when many families are vacationing, we are really struggling to get enough volunteers every night.” A typical practice session includes four special needs riders, one certified instructor and anywhere from four to 12 support volunteers. The ranch hosts two to three lessons each week night and an additional four lessons on the weekends to accommodate all of the equestrian athletes. This heavy load has been managed by a very small
army of diligent volunteers, led by one amazing 13year old, who spends a minimum of 21 hours a week helping the athletes. “On September 7th, Saddle Rock’s 62 athletes will travel to HorseAbility in Old Westbury to compete in the regional Special Olympics New York Horse Show. “This event is a huge deal for our athletes and they depend on the volunteers who have helped them train to get through the competition with as little stress as possible,” says Dell’Aira. One challenge these Olympians have to overcome is that they will not be able to bring their lesson horses to the show, so the support of our regular volunteers is even more important. “The program is very challenging to manage,” Dell’Aira commented.

Natural Changes
Lately, there has been a lot of talk over the issue of environmental conservation. It is crucial to the well being of our ecosystem that we look after all of nature’s life. Maintaining the levels of all animals, big or small, is no easy task, but it must be done. In order to ensure a healthy, abundant environment for everyone, it is a necessity to undertake the protection of, quite literally, everything. As someone who lives on Fire Island, I see everyday how deer, birds and even insects are affected by litter, pollution and the overall negative human impact. I also live within a preservation on this little Barrier
Island. Hurricane Sandy effectively cleaned the area out, giving way to the rise of many species that signal a healthy ecosystem. On this preservation, the frog population is beginning to flourish. This is a good thing because the presence of frogs have always meant a thriving environment teeming with food, vegetation and most importantly, other healthy wildlife. Dolphins are becoming an ever-present fixture on our seashore. Even with the ongoing sickness that the dolphins must endure, their populations seem to be doing well, especially this close to shore. A few weeks
ago, a sea turtle was spotted as well. These unprecedented sightings have signaled a positive change in the way we treat Mother Nature. Even as these animals are around now, it is crucial to their survival that we protect them. In addition to looking after ourselves, we should take care of the rest of Long Island’s wildlife. Senior Services Suffolk Legislator Lou D’Amaro is proud to announce that his office will be holding Senior Citizen Community Outreach Programs at several convenient Babylon and Huntington locations during the month of September to provide free Suffolk County Senior Citizens Identification Cards for residents ages 60 and older. These ID cards are required for the reduced fare on the Suffolk County Bus and also can be used to receive discounts
at many area businesses. Eligible and interested seniors can receive their cards by bringing proof of age and residence to one of these locations at the specified times. The newly-revised edition of the Suffolk County Office for the Aging Program & Services Guide for Senior Citizens will also be available at these events. September dates, locations and times are as follow: • Thursday, September 12th: North Babylon Public
Library, 815 Deer Park Avenue, North Babylon, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. (Note: A “Shed the Meds” Program will also be held in conjunction with the Outreach Program on this day and all local residents are invited and encouraged to bring their unused and unwanted medications to the library during the 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. time period for proper disposal) • Tuesday, September 17th: Town of Babylon Spangle Drive Senior Center, 438 Spangle Drive,
