Waiting Out The Storm By: Jamie Lynn Ryan As I sit here at home waiting for the floodwaters to recede from the latest torrential downpour to douse Long Island, I am reminded of how we are all truly at the mercy of Mother Nature. If Hurricane Sandy taught us anything, it was that no amount of preparation can adequately hold its own against the wrath of the elements. In this, we are all equal. And yet, there are
those who will try. Try to drive through three feet of water, try to navigate over icy roads, try to convince themselves of some way to rise above those circumstances clearly beyond their control. If the past several years have taught us anything, it is that these efforts are futile. Stay home. Accept the fact that, sometimes, it is better to wait out the storm than to drive (literally) into it. The same can be said for life as a whole. As
much as we all have this desperate need to control everything, we can’t. Simple as that. Sometimes, we need to accept fate and wait out the figurative “storm” until calmer winds prevail. In these situations, patience is truly a virtue, an enviable trait known only to some. And with that, I see rays of sun peeking through the clouds… Let’s hope I don’t meet too many obstacles on the road ahead.

In just a few days, I will be leaving Long Island as I embark upon the next chapter of my life. I’m going to college. This is going to be quite the change for me. Hopefully, it will also be a time that helps me mature and grow independently. After living with my mom and dad for seventeen years, we’ve gotten pretty close. After they drop me off at college, I’m not sure who will be crying more! They say the transition comes easily, but I’m not too sure. I’ll be in a different environment, without my brother, away from home and
tasked with a significant workload. It will take some getting used to, but college is going to turn out to be a very enjoyable time. I’m not nearly ready to go, but the countdown is on. Five days to say goodbye to family and friends. I find this whole thing strange because it feels like just yesterday I was getting ready to enter high school. I thought that was the big leagues, but now I’m realizing that it was just one step in forming the man that I hope I will become. My next four years at Villanova will teach me things that I can’t
learn at home. To better myself, I must leave the nest. Bruce Barton once said, “When you are through changing, you are through.” This mentality applies very well in this context. In order to grow, we must experience new things and change with the times. College is going to follow this idea, and I’m super excited for it. With a few days left, I’m looking forward to enjoying my time at home. There are many things that I have to take care of before I leave, and there is just not enough time.

New York State now requires all boaters 18 years and younger to have passed a boating safety class. This new law will continue each year for subsequent ages. Be a safe boater! Protect yourself, family and friends by taking a boating class now. Even if you have been boating for years, the new requirement will be fulfilled by taking this course and passing same. Captree Power Squadron, a unit of United States Power Squadrons (a non-profit nationwide organization)
will be conducting boating classes as listed. Upon course completetion students will be issued certificates that are accepted as proof of having the required education. That certificate is accepted by local police, bay constables and US Coast Guard. Most insurance companies also recognize that certificate to entitle you to reduced liability rates. Thomas Reed, 17, a June graduate of Deer Park High School, was one of 45 players selected to represent the United States at the 2014 International Federation of American Football Under-19 World Championship in Kuwait. Reed was the first football player from Long Island to be selected for the team, which captured the gold medal. The trip had personal meaning for Reed, whose father, Richard, served in the U.S. Army in Kuwait during Operation Desert Storm in 1990. The national team was assembled by USA Football and coached by Aaron Brady of Pennsylvania’s Malvern Preparatory School. After a training camp at Shenandoah University in Winchester, Va., Reed and his teammates headed to Kuwait where
they competed from July 7th-16th in the tournament as part of an eight-nation field that included Austria, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, Kuwait and Mexico. After beating Mexico 4914 in the opening game, with Reed contributing a 41-yard field goal, the Americans went on to defeat Germany 54-0 in a game highlighted by Reed’s seven tackles and one sack. In the July 16th championship game at Kuwait City’s Al-Salmiya Stadium, the U.S. beat Canada 40-17. “I plan to take it and
run with it,” Reed said. “It’s a huge blessing and a great opportunity to get recognized.” “Whatever I do is never good enough,” he added. “That’s how you get better and compete.” Reed, a star member of Deer Park’s Falcons football squad and the school’s 2013 homecoming king last October, will be attending Lackawanna College in Pennsylvania this fall.
