Pencil It In By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Pencil it in. Erase it. And repeat. Such has been the state of my calendar for the last several weeks. Months, even. I’m not sure when it became so difficult to plan things. Used to be a time when you could simply pick up the phone – yes, the actual phone – and call a friend to go to dinner, a movie, the beach, whatever. Chances are, you also needed to coordinate a ride to said destination from a parental unit; but still, somehow, you made it happen. Nowadays, such outings require about 30 days advance notice – and, even at that, will most likely be
rescheduled at least three times before materializing. For some reason, the more methods of communication available, the more difficult it has become to maintain contact. Actual, personal contact. Sending a text, only to have it halfheartedly acknowledged four days later, is not quite the same as catching up over drinks. Liking a Facebook status doesn’t indicate your genuine interest in another person’s life. Face-to-face conversation does. I have always been the type of person who tries to keep in touch, the one reaching out, making plans, coordinating… And I don’t mind it, mostly. But when it feels as though it’s becoming more of a chore
than anything, well, perhaps it’s time to reevaluate. Friendships, like the communication which they are based upon, are a twoway street. Summer is a perfect season to reconnect, to socialize, to reunite with those long-lost, or perhaps just slightly lapsed, acquaintances. School is out, work schedules tend to be more lax, vacations are planned… and more often than not, it winds up being worth the wait. If only it could be written in ink from day one. Scholar-in-Residence Rabbi Yakov Saacks, Director of The Chai Center, announced today that Rabbi Eli Laufer has been named Scholar-inResidence, and his wife Musia Laufer, Coordinator of Special Needs Youth and Ariella’s Friendship Circle, a local chapter of today’s fastest growing Jewish organization for children with special needs. Rabbi Laufer will primarily focus on education, where he will be responsible for teaching Torah and Jewish values to all members of the Jewish community. Musia Laufer will lead the expansion of Ariella’s Friendship Circle and spearhead the creation of
a vibrant sisterhood for all Jewish women in the community. Rabbi Laufer, was born and raised in the heart of the Crown Heights Jewish community home of the Lubavitcher Rebbe and the world headquarters of Chabad Lubavitch. He studied in the Oholei Torah Talmudic Seminary in Brooklyn, New York, and the Lubavitch Yeshivos in Los Angeles, California. Rabbi Laufer then served as a teacher and mentor for the Jewish community of Caracas Venezuela. He received his Rabbinical degree under the auspices of Rabbi Avrohom Hirsh Wozner, world renowned authority on Jewish
law, and chief Rabbi of Congregation Yetev Lev of Monsey, New York. Throughout his years in Yeshiva, Rabbi Laufer used his spare time aiding and running many Jewish educational outreach programs in places such as Montreal, New York and California. Musia Laufer grew up in Miami, Florida, where her parents serve as the spiritual leaders of a large thriving Jewish community. For her higher education Laufer went abroad to Milan, Italy and Dnepropetrovsk, Ukraine, where she studied Judaics, special education, psychology and programming. She worked with the local
communities, planning and coordinating events of learning and Jewish pride for local girls in college, middle and high school; women; and for the local orphanage. Pool Smart Winner were submitted by students from throughout Legislative District 17 and, initially, Oviya’s creative design was named the District winner. Her poster was then submitted to compete at the County level where it was ultimately selected as the Second Place winner by the nonpartisan Legislature’s nonpartisan Budget Review Office. Each contest participant received a Certificate of Distinguished Achievement, presented to them at a ceremony at their respective schools, and Oviya was awarded a special Suffolk County Proclamation from Legislator D’Amaro before
the entire Legislature in June. She was joined by her parents, as well as her classroom teacher Karen Hyland and art teacher Joanne Buck. “The ‘Be Pool Smart’ poster contest is a fun way to teach children in spreading the important message about how taking a few simple precautions around swimming pools can help avoid tragedies,” said Legislator D’Amaro. “I thank all of the students who participated in the poster contest and especially want to congratulate Oviya. She has made our community proud.”
