The Southold Historical Society is pleased to announce it is hosting an exhibition of paintings/ sculpture this August as part of the first annual “North Fork Annual,” a juried art exhibition that will feature a $500 purchase prize that will be awarded to the best artwork in the exhibit. The Days You Remember

There’s something to be said for nostalgia, even the not-so-distant-past variety. I have a hard time viewing cultural happenings, music and movies from the 90’s as “classic” - however, when you realize that some of these momentous occasions are approaching their 15 and 20year anniversaries, well that gives things a whole new perspective. Recently, the National Geographic channel premiered a new miniseries focusing on this particular decade, causing many from my generation to take a step back and realize that some of those things that seemed like “just yesterday” in fact

Perhaps part of the reason behind this time lapse of sorts is the fact that many of my fellow late 20-somethings and early 30-somethings still live at home, in the same town in which they attended high school and football games, local bars and beaches, and continue to socialize with the same circle of close knit friends from their school days. Essentially, not much has changed – so it seems positively mind-blowing to think that nearly two decades have elapsed. Ah, but they have. And none of us is getting any younger in the process. A sobering thought, isn’t it? Of course, in reality,

world as a whole, to start, straight on down to the local neighborhood streets we used to casually stroll along. To think that reunions have come and gone, friends have married (and, in some cases divorced), and are in the process of raising children and buying homes of their own – “growing up,” as they say – well, it had to happen eventually. Personally, I enjoy a good trip down memory lane as much as the next person. It’s fun to reflect upon the people who have graced our lives, the person you were and the one you still hope to become. Nostalgia or no, there’s still plenty of time to rewrite the story along the way!

Attracting more 120 Long Island families and raising more than $10,000 to help underwrite scholarships for patients at the Cancer Center for Kids (CCFK), the Anthony T. Todaro Foundation’s Seventh Annual Softball Game and Barbecue on Sunday May 4th celebrated the legacy of Mr. and Mrs. Gaetano Todaro’s son, Anthony. In the past, the Todaro family’s hard work and dedication funded the Center’s Child Psychology Room. The Foundation’s gift card donations to Center patients and to the CCFK’s “Theme Week” have energized the Center’s Child Life Program, much to the delight of the children and their families. Pediatric Development Manager Linda Sweeney addressed the crowd and expressed her appreciation. “We are so grateful to the Todaro family. They have

truly made magic here today, honoring Anthony and generously supporting the Cancer Center for Kids. Rosemarie, I don’t know how you do it, but every year, you manage to create a more beautiful event, and raise even more money for the Center. You and your husband are brave and wonderful people. You turned your loss into a gift to help others. There’s no greater tribute than that.” Close to 100 beautifully decorated baskets were filled with wonderful raffle prizes, assembled by Mrs. Todaro and her amazing friends and family. The following Foundation supporters donated the prizes: Segesta Pizza, Sal Reina, Miller’s Ale House of Deer Park, Francesco Jara, Elite Lawn Care, Briscoe’s Gift Box, Dalisa Pizza, Mario’s Meat Center and many more. The CCFK is a place of inspiration and healing

for children and their families. It is the largest outpatient facility for treating pediatric cancer and hematologic disease in Nassau County. Since the CCFK’s psychosocial programs and services are free and are not reimbursed by insurance companies, every dollar the Foundation raised at the Softball Game went directly to help those kids and their families. Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk’s ReStore, located in Ronkonkoma, has been successful in raising funds for its affordable home building program for the past eight years. Moment In The Sun As the sun shone brightly and a refreshing breeze moved through Al Centamore Football Field, members of Deer Park High School’s Class of 2014, led by the American Celtic Pipe Band, marched in for the school’s 51st commencement. Student Council President Daniela Zabbatino led the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by Jaclyn Miano singing “The Star-Spangled Banner” and a lovely performance of Deer Park’s alma mater by members of the school’s girls chorus. The graduating seniors were congratulated by laudatory speakers including Class President Gina Hock, Superintendent of Schools Eva J. Demyen, who urged the students to listen more to their parents than to their friends and played them Bobby McFerrin’s “Don’t Worry, Be Happy,” and Principal James Cummings, who expressed immense pride in the students who had been under his supervision for the last four years. Continuing a longstanding Deer Park tradition, Class of 2004 valedictorian Nicholas Porcaro returned as a guest speaker, offering Rocky Balboa as a model of determination and providing this year’s graduates a synopsis of Porcaro’s rise, fall and eventually successful career reinvention in the business world. Salutatorian Andreas Stamatakis told his peers that what they learned in their studies would not be enough to prepare them for adult life beyond high school. “Today we take a step toward a unique period of our lives, a time when our lack of preparation is our greatest strength,” he said. “When challenges come, and they undoubtedly will, we have the greatest chance to do something unique and innovative in the face of adversity. We will set precedent instead of following it. We will lead meaningful change. In this way, we might leave our mark on the world. And if it’s going to happen at all, it will happen now. Today we embark on the most exciting opportunity we will ever have. Today we leave the nest, and there’s no going back.

The new Wyandanch Youth Center Chorus is a children’s ensemble that has been created this year by Usdan Center for the Creative and Performing Arts. The program is one part of Usdan’s initiative to support arts education on Long Island and in the Boroughs. The Chorus presented its first concert on June 10th at the Wyandanch Family Life Center where the 50-member group, consisting of first to fifth graders, performed classical, Broadway, folk and contemporary pop music. Composers included Rodgers and Hammerstein, Woody Guthrie, Bobby McFerrin and Pharrell Williams. The choral director is Melody Hall, the Assistant Teacher for Usdan’s Junior Chorus. The accompanying pianist was Andres Maldonado.

Let’s make it count.” In his speech as class valedictorian, Harvard-bound Kyle Devine discussed the value of uncertainty and adversity in forging the future. “Here we stand on the outskirts of adulthood, but no matter how we approach the future, there’s so much of it that remains a mystery,” he said. “While we may know who we are today, we still are yet to discover who we’ll become, but it’s nothing to worry about – we have a lifetime to figure that out. What

the past four years have shown me is that many of us have the tendency to doubt ourselves, and I think it comes from our fear of failure. In our lives so far, there have been good times, there have been not-so-good times, and because we’re human, there have been mistakes. What’s wonderful about these experiences, however, is that regardless of what the consequence may be, there’s a lesson that comes forth with it, which has allowed us to develop into the individuals we are all looking at today. You can set as clear a path as you want right now, but never panic if there’s an obstacle blocking your way

or you decide that you want to take a left instead of a right. Instead, immerse yourself in the possibilities that the world has to offer you and that you have to offer the world.” “Things will get difficult, because nothing worth having ever comes easy,” he went on to tell his fellow seniors. “But that’s nothing new, and you’ve overcome adversity before. We’ve faced hardships, we’ve made mistakes, and yet here we are, celebrating our accomplishments with our friends and family who’ve been there along the way. Times will get tougher, but so will you. There may be moments you second-guess yourself and want to quit; however, if you can rise to the occasion and maintain faith in yourself, you will get back up, surmount whatever comes your way and succeed. You can’t truly appreciate your triumphs and happiness without acknowledging the low points and failures that came along the way. As the Chinese proverb says, ‘the gem cannot be polished without friction.’” “Before I leave the podium, I would just like to thank every one of my classmates,” added Devine, choking back tears and inciting a standing ovation. “I can truthfully say I enjoyed the past four years with you all. You made it a joy to come to school every day, and I can only hope that I taught you just a small fraction of what you all taught me, especially about what it meant to be a friend. I truly wish you the best of luck in all your future endeavors, though I’m sure you won’t need it. Congratulations to the Class of 2014!” After the candidates for graduation were introduced and diplomas conferred and awarded by district administrators and members of the Deer Park Board of the Education, the excited new graduates flung their caps skyward, and proceeded out to the strains of Elmer Bernstein’s “The Great Escape,” performed by the Deer Park High School Symphonic Band.

New Children’s Ensemble

The Wyandanch Youth Center Chorus is a partnership of Usdan Center and the Family Life Center/Wyandanch Youth Center. It was established to give children a positive choral experience and since January, rehearsals have been held twice a week. The program is sponsored by Russell Albanese, a new member of Usdan Center’s Leadership Council and an award-winning “Green” real estate developer. Mr. Albanese is currently building Wyandanch Village, a major revitalization project in the area. In addition to his sponsorship of the Chorus, Albanese has underwritten scholarships for selected chorus members to study music at Usdan during the 2014 summer season. Dale Lewis, Executive Director of Usdan Center, says of the new project, “We

are enormously excited by this initiative which is enabling us to bring the arts into the lives of a new community of children. We are grateful to Mr. Albanese for making it possible.” At the helm of his family’s 64 year-old real estate development business, Russell Albanese has more than 30 years experience in planning, designing and constructing office and residential buildings, much of it focused on making those projects environmentally sustainable. The Albanese Organization built the country’s first certified green residential buildings in Battery Park City in 2003, and in 2008 the firm opened the 33-story Visionaire in Lower Manhattan, which garnered a Platinum LEED rating. The company also transformed the

110,000-square-foot office building at 1001 Franklin Ave. in Garden City, the first Long Island multitenant office building to be totally retrofitted for LEED certification. In 2012, Russell Albanese was honored by the U.S. Green Building Council’s Long Island chapter. The Wyandanch Family Life Center, Inc., directed by Jeanine Reynolds, focuses on the social and educational development of children, and on providing a safe place for children to learn and play. In furtherance of that mission the Center also operated the Wyandanch Youth Center, with a variety of sports and social activities for children and their families. actors Natalie Portman, Olivia Thirlby and Jackie Hoffman, and singers Jane Monheit and Mariah Carey. It has introduced the arts to more than 60,000 TriState Area children since its founding in 1968. Each summer, 1,600 students are transported to the Center in air-conditioned buses each day. One-third of Usdan’s students attend on scholarship. Although the mission of the Center is for every child to establish a relationship with the arts, the unique stimulation of the Center has caused many to go on to arts careers. Alumni include members of Broadway shows and major music, theater, and

dance ensembles such as the Boston Pops and the New York City Ballet. A special feature of each student’s program is the Center’s series of daily assemblies known as the Festival Concerts. These are short educational performances by distinguished artist and by Usdan students as well. In addition to its regular programs, Usdan offers special opportunities for advanced high schoolage performing artists in music and dance. Responding to an increased demand to supply supplemental food to children who rely on school lunch programs, but may not get enough to eat when school is in summer recess, Island Harvest Food Bank today announced that it has expanded its Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) to 50 sites across Long Island. Last year the SFSP served 38,500 meals to 2,215 children through 28 sites in Nassau and Suffolk counties. This year, more than 75,000 meals are expected to be served to approximately 3,500 children participating in the program. “Summertime should be a carefree, fun and relaxing time for all children,” said Randi Shubin Dresner, president and CEO, Island Harvest. “Sadly, for many children who rely on

school lunch programs, the summer can cause worry, stress and empty stomachs.” According to Feeding America, the nation’s leading domestic hungerrelief organization, 62 percent of client households with children under the age of 18 reported participating in the National School Lunch Program, but only 14 percent reported having a child participate in a summer feeding program that provides free food when school is out. “This underscores the critical importance of summer feeding programs, while emphasizing the need for increased awareness of these vital programs,” said Ms. Shubin Dresner. Island Harvest’s SFSP is administered by the Food and Nutrition Service, an agency of the U.S.
