Don’t Forget the Flats Expanding upon my adventuring-into-NYC theme from last week, clearly, I prefer to get around on foot. Sure, weather can be a factor, or time, but as long as it’s somewhat feasible, walking the city streets can be one of the more enjoyable aspects of exploring Manhattan. Assuming, that is, you have the proper footwear. Do I speak from personal experience? Why, of course I do. This past autumn, my friend and I – both former dancers – decided to buy tickets to the NYC Ballet. It would be our very first time seeing such a professional-scale performance; plus it was a great excuse to spend the day roaming the city. We (somewhat) mapped out our excursions, deciding we would walk from Penn Station all the way up to Lincoln Center, meandering off-route periodically. The day was unseasonably
warm for late September (like, approaching 90º warm), but we forged ahead with our plan to brave the elements. The main stop I wanted to make was to Central Park, in the vicinity of Strawberry Fields. For those unfamiliar, that’s a solid 35 blocks. Not a problem, at first. The issue, one that we had failed to appropriately navigate, was getting through the park without traveling, oh, about 27 miles out of the way. That was the moment when my decision to wear heels really kicked in as the wrong choice. Pavement was one thing; rolling hills and dirt paths quite another. Let’s just sum up the experience by stating that, after wandering aimlessly for hours, stopping to rest at literally every single park bench we passed, I was in dire need of a shoe substitute. With our show at Lincoln Center fast approaching, we desperately scanned the stores as we made our way south.
Finally, I spotted a Duane Reade. They sell flip-flops, don’t they? Well, yes, they do. However, unless you have size 11 feet, they won’t do you much good. Desperately, I searched the racks for something, anything else that would fulfill my purpose – which, at this point, was not being forced to walk barefoot down the city sidewalks. Just when I had given up hope, there they were – a pair of size 9 (I’m a size 7) ballet slipper flats. Sold. And so off we went to Lincoln Center, shoes in hand. Classy. I found myself reflecting upon this fond memory as I prepared for yet another city trip, to yet another ballet performance at Lincoln Center, with the same friend, over the Fourth of July weekend. Plans were mapped out accordingly, including a detour into Central Park.

Finest Recognized The high-achieving members of Deer Park High School’s Class of 2015 were recognized at the school’s annual Senior Awards on June 4th, giving teachers, administrations, local politicians and community members the opportunity to honor the students for the hard work and dedication they displayed throughout their high school years. The awards, both schoolbased and communitywide in nature, covered a variety of areas of achievement. In some instances, students were required to write essays explaining why they would be the best candidate to receive a certain scholarship, while others were based solely on academic performance. Many of the awards were selected by a committee
of teachers, counselors and administrators from the high school. “The students sitting behind me represent Deer Park’s finest,” said Associate Principal Jeanne Kozlowsky in her opening speech. “As a result of these students’ commitment to their studies, athletic teams, extracurricular activities and community, they have made this high school a better place.” Three different alumni groups – The Classes of 1983, 1984 and 1995 – sponsored scholarships this year, with a total monetary value of more than $75,000. “They felt it was an opportunity for them to give back to their alma mater,” said Kozlowsky. Awards that were distributed to the students included
checks, plaques, medals, certificates, proclamations and iPads. At the beginning, the Student Council President Taylor Morales led the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by a strong rendition of The StarSpangled Banner by Mauricio Montes. The high school’s jazz ensemble, led by director Jerry Cannarozzo, performed before the ceremony and at the intermission for the audience’s enjoyment. The band’s featured piece was Glenn Miller’s “In the Mood,” featuring their saxophone section; other tunes included Steely Dan’s Peg, Chick Corea’s Spain and Chuck Mangione’s Feels So Good, the latter featuring Jack Dillon on flugelhorn.

Rising to the top of Deer Park High School’s Class of 2015 are valedictorian Sabrina Grunseich and salutatorian Aaron Zhang. Grunseich, who serves as president of the school’s National Honor Society and editor of the school
newspaper, is a member of the Spanish Honor Society and Varsity Leaders Club. As a varsity athlete, she earned All-League for volleyball and Academic All-County for basketball. She will attend Stony Brook University this fall, majoring in chemistry. Zhang, a winner of the National Merit Scholarship, serves as captain of the math team and vice president of the academic team. He is also a member of the high school’s French Honor Society, plays in the chamber orchestra, and was named a Science Olympiad medalist and

way.” “Today marks one of the first turning points of our lives,” said Sabrina Grunseich, the class valedictorian, reflecting on the students’ shared journey at Deer Park. Her reflective speech discussed the meaning of time and the ephemeral nature of accomplishing goals. “Take the lessons you learn and use them in the now,” she urged. “The journey to achieving a goal is more important than the accomplishment.” She ended with a hope for her fellow graduates, saying, “I wish for all my peers’ journeys to be filled with meanings and firsts.” In an ongoing tradition, Principal James Cummings welcomed back a face from a decade past, Class of 2005 valedictorian Megan Chrones Barco, who talked of the value of gratefulness, even during difficult times. The final speaker was Cummings himself, who noted the school’s 94 percent graduation rate – tops in the town of Babylon – as a deep source of pride. “This is an easy class to brag about,” he said. “I couldn’t be more proud of what they’ve accomplished. This group has done incredible things – in the classroom, on the field, on the stage.” Urging the new graduates to make a difference in the lives of others, the principal ended his address on a high note, telling his charges, “It is time for you to make your mark on this world.” Their next step on that journey was to the podium, receiving diplomas from members of the Board of Education. Once all were seated again, it was time for the ritual of turning tassels from right to left, then tossing the caps to the sky. Leaving the field to the sound of the combined symphonic and ninthgrade bands performing Elmer Bernstein’s “The Great Escape,” the new alumni walked out to begin their bright futures. 296260N0708

At Deer Park’s 52nd commencement on June 26th, the high school’s Class of 2015 took a meaningful step on their life journey, celebrating in front of a cheering sea of family and friends. The American Celtic Pipe Band again led the way, marching into Al Centamore Football Field with a long line of excited seniors behind them clad in maroon and white, ready for their big moment. Beginning the ceremony, the Pledge of Allegiance was led by Student Council President Taylor Morales, followed by a masterful rendition of The Star-Spangled Banner by Jessica Orelus. Superintendent Eva J. Demyen talked to the seniors about their yearbook theme, “A story to remember,” relating it to an anecdote from her own senior year when she fell from a tree. “The moral is, if you fall, get back up,” she told them. In an emotional speech, senior class adviser James Henry told his students, “We’ve grown together as a family to achieve special recognition. You are a remarkable class and one I will never forget.” “Our time is measured in moments and memories,” said wistful Senior Class President Taylor Brennan, lamenting how fast time has gone for the students during their high school career. “I hope you find yourself happy and healthy after high school,” she told them. A 27-strong vocal ensemble then sang the school’s alma mater, leading into affecting speeches by the salutatorian and valedictorian. Salutatorian Aaron Zhang delivered a memorably metaphysical address, touching on time, space, mathematics and the universe. “It’s easy to feel overwhelmed in the face of the unknown,” he told his classmates. “The world you are about to enter is one of uncertainty, but look closer and you can find order and wonder. You are ready to find your

Maturity on Display Maturity was on display as the eighth-graders of Deer Park’s Robert Frost Middle School High School marked their transition to high school at a June 24th moving up ceremony in the school’s gymnasium. After the traditional processional and Pledge of Allegiance, first up was Principal Eliana K. Levey. “It has been such a pleasure to watch them mature and grow,” said Levey, describing her students, before she told them, “There is nothing you cannot do if you believe in yourselves.”
Next on the program were speeches from Student Council copresidents Zachary Cresciullo and Lindsay Dominique. “Goodbye Robert Frost, and hello to the high school Class of 2019,” said Cresciullo. Dominique talked about succeeding in high school and making good choices, before telling her classmates, “Good luck and congratulations on making it to high school.” Levey and associate principals Charles Cobb and Gary Ramonetti
handed out student awards before the evening’s main act – the presentation of graduation certificates to each proud student. Second-graders at Deer Park’s John Quincy Adams and May Moore primary schools marked their transition to intermediate school with a pair of rousing moving up ceremonies. Joined by proud parents and families, each class at both schools was presented and recognized and Superintendent of Schools Eva Demyen handed out achievement and attendance certificates. At May Moore, the ceremony moved outdoors this year to the school field, resulting in a sunny celebration. With an American flag flying above their heads, music teacher Kristen Lombardo led the 147 children in songs including America, The May Moore Song, Onward, All We’re Meant to Be and You Know We’re Moving. “Continue to make us proud,” said May Moore Principal Alicia Konecny, before introducing essay winners Katie Busch, Mikhail Clarke, Kelsey Rotzman and Jason Turner, who read aloud the letters they composed to new May
Moore students. “I am sad to leave,” Clarke said in his essay, but that quickly turned to happiness. At the end of the June 11th ceremony, the students, joined by Konecny and Lombardo, danced their way down the aisle in a joyous procession to the sounds of Mark Ronson’s UpTown Funk! At JQA’s June 16 event, festooned with bright balloons, the 132 little graduates sang a variety of
songs including Imagine Dragons’ On Top of the World and Jack Hartmann’s One Small Voice. The principal, Dr. Christine Criscione, presented a video montage of the year’s highlights before the classes walked out for the last time to Pharrell’s “Happy.” Representatives from John F. Kennedy Intermediate, where all the students will attend third grade in the fall, were on hand to offer words of encouragement.
Celeste Archer, associate principal at JFK, told the JQA grads, “You enter JFK with a fresh start, and we have many exciting things planned for you.” “I encourage you all to aim high and dream big,” her fellow JFK associate principal, Shaun McLeod, said to the May Moore students. “I am officially welcoming you to the JFK family.”
