Let me begin by extending a fin of appreciation to all those fans who have written in after what I like to call “The Great Snail Debacle.” There were a few condolences on the untimely passing of Squeegee; but, mostly, readers seemed to side with me in my quest to rid my tank of this unwanted aquatic vacuum. Kudos to you all for seeing things my way! On another note, following the intruder’s departure, my Human was horrified to notice that my fins seemed unusually frayed and damaged. Was it stress? Was it the deteriorating water quality due to this creature’s special “cookies”

and the residue they left behind? Or, was it my refusal to be “scooped” out of my underwater oasis into my old bowl for temporary maintenance and cleaning? This last option seems most likely, as I fight my Human every time I see her coming with that cup. I know it only means one thing – bath time. At any rate, when I caught a glimpse of my reﬂection in the glass, I was truly horrified at the state of my once-luxurious aqua fins. I sulked for days, burrowing into the gravel and hiding behind my plant at the first sign of visitors, not wanting anyone to see me in such a decimated state. But, several weeks later, they seem to be slowly

Youth Shelter Opens

Executive Director of Hope For Youth, began the ceremony. “There currently is no such shelter in Suffolk County, so we’re thrilled and honored to be opening this program,” said Hegarty. “We look forward to providing a safe, supportive environment to all youth that find themselves in crisis and on the street.” Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone gave further uplifting remarks. “This first shelter is important... it is going to help kids in crisis, young people who are the responsibility of us all, to stabilize and hopefully deal with the issues that led them out of there homes in the first place...

This home represents our effort as a community to say, ‘We take responsibility for our young people and we’re going to work to address the issues... not just because it’s the right thing to do, but because it’s the smart thing to do.’” Bellone further added, “If you take a look at the home and you go inside, it really is a home. State officials and representatives from all levels were in attendance for the ribbon cutting ceremony of Suffolk County’s newest youth shelter program. The program, run by Hope For Youth, an Amityville based nonprofit dedicated to positive change in children’s lives, will serve as a safe haven for teens aged 12-20 that find themselves in need of shelter. In addition to a bed to sleep in and food to eat, the shelter provides on-site social workers that work with each child one-onone to facilitate eventual relocation be it back home or through further social services. Town of Babylon Councilwoman Jackie Gordon and New York State Assemblywoman Kimberly Jean-Pierre recently joined with members of the Town’s Veterans’ Advisory Board and hosted a ceremony to honor local high school graduates who are going on to serve in the military. Thirty-one total students from the Town of Babylon will be joining the ranks of the United States Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, or Coast Guard. Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone and Suffolk County Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory were also in attendance to commend the graduates. Command Sergeant Major (Retired) Augusto L. Tavernier, who currently resides in Brentwood, delivered remarks at the ceremony. CSM Tavernier served as a squad leader and cannon crewman for the 5th Battalion 5th Field Artillery, and served for 24 years as a Military Policeman. While serving our country, CSM Tavernier earned more than a dozen awards and decorations including the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Humanitarian Service Medal, and the United Nations Service Ribbon. Councilwoman Gordon, a Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Army Reserves who was deployed four times, wished the young men and women the best and thanked them for answering the call to serve their country. Each of the graduates was presented with an official Town of Babylon proclamation in their honor.
