Summer “To Do” List By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I remember the moment like it was yesterday. Among the sea of caps and gowns, over the illustrious strains of Pomp & Circumstance… there he was, James Gandolfini, sitting one row behind my family at my college graduation. I could hear the buzz building behind me, as people started to notice. Why is he here? Is he speaking? Does he know someone who’s graduating? The fact that a celebrity was sitting among us was clearly the highlight for the thousand or so graduates on that day, some nine years ago, on the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University. I remember being very aware of his presence, as every time I glanced over my shoulder at my own little cheering section… there he was. When I walked up to receive my “unofficial” diploma (the real

one would arrive several weeks later), I carried a small index card with my name written on it to hand to the Dean. “Jamie Lynn Ryan” they announced. As I looked up at the sea of faces, my eye once again fell on Mr. Tony Soprano himself, only this time, he was looking right back at me. And with a big grin and a wink, he began applauding. I couldn’t believe it. I found myself glancing over both shoulders to see if the acknowledgement was meant for someone else, but there was no one there. As I walked back to my seat with a giant, silly smile on my face, I began quietly counting down the seconds until I could run and tell my family what had just happened. He smiled at me. He winked. He clapped. For me. What a doll. Following the ceremony, we all realized that he was indeed there for someone, his own niece, who we had apparently been attending school with for the last four years.

Who knew! And once I was able to meet up with my family, my brother revealed that he had gotten to the graduation tent a little early to reserve a row of seats, only to find Mr. Gandolfini sitting there already. Reluctant to disturb him at that point, they exchanged a slight greeting. Now, as the crowd began to disperse, people began tentatively approaching him to shake hands, ask for an autograph, maybe a photo… Me, I didn’t want to bother him. Ironically, that very occasion came up this past Father’s Day, as my brother and I reminisced over how we should have stopped to talk to him… and then came the tragic news just three days later. What a shame. I didn’t have the honor of truly knowing Mr. Gandolfini, but his presence surely touched me on one of the most memorable days of my life. May he Rest In Peace.

Words From The Heart Robert Frost Middle School eighth-grade student Christy Jourdain received the gift of life with a heart transplant last year, and during this challenging time, used her creativity to fuel her strength. Throughout Christy’s heart transplant journey, which included long stays in the hospital and myriad tests, she wrote a series of poems about colors, titled I Need Colors, Colors Mean Life! which described the emotions each shade evoked at that time. Christy’s sister Saraya, a seventh-grader, was inspired by her sister’s fortitude and bravery and decided to pay homage to Christy’s literary works by bringing them to life. Led by art teachers Danielle Menig and Maria Giglio, students honored Christy’s vision by taking each of her poems and creating original acrylic paintings to illustrate her words.

Deer Park High School’s SADD Club works yearround to support the local community and those far away who are in need. To spread some warmth to the devastated town of Newtown, Conn., the club created an inspirational quilt for the Sandy Hook School. The quilt is decorated with words to motivate the students and staff and fabric hearts to represent the lives lost.

The center panel reads, “From Our Hearts to Yours.” SADD members and staff personalized their design, signing their names to the back of the quilt, and sent a club photo displaying the project. As June comes to a close, thousands of Long Island’s students will be flocking to the beaches instead of to the classrooms. The end of June customarily signifies the end of the school year. With the end of the school year comes herds of teens with nothing scheduled to do all day. These newly freed kids will go to the beach in search of a little relaxation to unwind from yet another stressful school year. As the last bell of the year tolls, many local high schoolers will beeline straight for Long Island’s coast. After my final test, the Chemistry Regents, my friends and

I hopped on the ferry to Ocean Beach and spent some time enjoying the sand, the sun and the surf. It was nice just to forget about studying, about stress, and about doing our homework. The realization that we had just begun our three month relaxation period had finally started to set in. While playing in the water with my closest friends, we felt happy to be done with school. The pressure put on children from school magically disappears as you leave the classroom for the last time for almost 100 days. On that final day, the only worry one feels is whether or not they have a ride to

the beach. Here on Long Island, the beach is a Mecca for teens. With no worries about school, we are free to enjoy our downtime and finally let loose. As my friends and I exemplified, the primary goal of June - September shouldn’t rest upon education; it should rest upon relaxation. The precious little time you have to unwind is important to students. Everyone needs some time to just “shut your brain off” and get into the “summer mindset.” The end of the school year is a time that enables teens to have fun, relax and hang out with friends.

Golf Classic Set On Monday, July 8th, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. (ADRC) will host its third annual Kenneth F. Lawlor Memorial Golf Classic and Dinner at the Huntington Country Club on 483 West Main St., in Huntington. The price is $2,000 for a foursome. That includes brunch, a round of golf, cocktail hour and dinner. For dinner only (no golf), the cost is $175 per person. All proceeds from the event will go towards ADRC and The Mickey & Felice Neuwirth Care Center. The event is named after Col. Kenneth F. Lawlor, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in the last years of his life. His grandson, Keith Lawlor, who chairs the golf tournament, is also Vice President of ADRC’s Board of Directors. Last year, the event successfully raised over $127,000 towards Alzheimer’s research and treatment. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m., followed by a brunch at 10 a.m. At noon, there will be a barbeque lunch and shotgun start. The cocktail reception will

start at 5 p.m., followed by a dinner, a program, trophies and raffles. Golfers will also have the chance to win a car in the Hole-InOne Challenge sponsored by Mercedes-Benz of Smithtown. Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center - which is headquartered in Bay Shore and has a satellite office in Southampton - is the only local Alzheimer’s Disease advocacy and educational facility whose mission is to provide hands-on support and services to families on Long Island and the New York metropolitan area. Brendan built an electric circuit maze that his subjects were required to circumnavigate with a loop wand. If the subjects touched the maze’s wire with the loop wand, the electrical circuit was completed and a buzzer signaled the error. He timed the entire process evaluating the accuracy as well as the speed of the test subject Brendan tested children, teens and adults ranging in age from 20 to 80 years old. His research showed children and teens actually had the most errors and longest times. Those participants in the 20 - 50 age group demonstrated improved results, while the 60 - 80 age group showed a marked decrease in accuracy and time. He was able to conclude that fine motor skills improve with age and then decline

Do fine motor skills decrease with age? Just ask John F. Kennedy Intermediate School Student Brendan Eising. Inspired by his own grandparents and working under the guidance and encouragement of his teacher Keri Inghilterra, Brendan researched this topic and came away with some very enlightening results, earning his project, “Shake It Up,” honors as the 4th Grade Winner in the 2013 Brookhaven National Lab Elementary School Science Fair. In recognition of his achievement, Suffolk County Legislator Lou D’Amaro presented Brendan with a Proclamation before his family, teacher, principal and the entire County Legislature during the June 4th General Meeting. To study this topic,

The 2013 Maggie Fischer Memorial Great South Bay Cross Bay Swim will be held on Friday, July 12th, at 7:45 a.m. The event is a 5.25 mile swim across the Great South Bay, beginning in Kismet, Fire Island and ending at Gilbert Park in Brightwaters, at 11:45 a.m. Proceeds from this year’s swim will benefit the Hospice Care Network’s Children and Family Bereavement Program and the Maggie Fischer Scholarship Fund. The swim dates back to the early 1900’s. It experienced a hiatus of 22 years after 1977 and was brought back in 1999 by Rory Allen, a Bay Shore resident and Ferry Captain. Days before the swim, Maggie Fischer, a 17 yearold Brightwaters resident and Saltaire lifeguard, was killed in a car accident. She was to have competed in the event. The organizers and participants of that Swim petitioned to have the event renamed in her honor. Since 2000, the swim has taken on an entirely new meaning for the Bay Shore/Brightwaters and Fire Island communities. The 2012 Swim had the largest field of participants to date. Registration closed in early May, with a full foster of 100 participants. Through the dedication of numerous volunteers, local businesses and organizations, the swim grows and improves each year.
