amela Arcuri’s first-grade class at Deer Park’s May Moore Primary School presented an Endangered Animal Fair on June 4th, serving as the culmination of an extensive project that incorporated reading, writing, research, creative arts, technology and public speaking. The students worked cooperatively in groups to learn about six endangered animals: elephants, tigers, polar bears, sea turtles, cheetahs and blue whales.

Students from Suffolk County schools that are active members of Suffolk ASSET were able to apply for one of twelve $2,000 scholarships for graduating seniors who plan to pursue collegiate studies in a field that integrates technology. The Suffolk ASSET application committee reviewed more than 70 applications, and among those chosen were two members of Deer Park’s Class of 2015, DiModica and Zhang. DiModica plans on attending Binghamton University to study premedicine, physics or computer science. Zhang will be attending Brown University to study computer science. The scholarship recipients

As I write this column, just two days from the summer solstice, I am inspired by several seasonal thoughts… Weather. That great natural occurrence that has the ability to singlehandedly cancel any plans you may have made, no matter how far in advance, with no regard for reservations, ticket purchases, how many people you may have coordinated with… When Mother Nature is compelled to bless us with a torrential thunderstorm, blizzard, blistering heat or any other, more serious, natural disaster, you can say goodbye to your beach day. Society. We seem to enjoy our solitude, even when we are among several thousand of our closest friends in a

stadium or concert arena. As I mentioned in a previous column, I have tickets to about seven upcoming performances over the next several months. In the three shows I have attended so far, it was amazing to look around at the audience and see the great majority on their cell phones, taking “selfies” with friends, surfing Facebook, Instagram… everything but actually listening to the music. Money well spent. Traffic. Long Island is known for its congestion. While summer may bring a bit of respite in the form of school being out of session and some taking their vacation time elsewhere, this is counteracted by those who migrate en masse to the beaches and parks and pools daily, clogging up every major

Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey recently had the opportunity to attend the awards presentation at the 26th Annual BACCA Juried Art Show, which was held at the Old Town Hall. The event was widely attended not only by the participating artists, but by the greater community of art enthusiasts as well. This particular art exhibition involved a variety of mediums including oils, acrylics, portraits, mixed media, drawing, watercolors, and pastels. “Have I left things unfinished?” is something you might ask. I could make a very long list if I were just up to the task. There are cobwebs in the corners, multiplying as we speak. Where is the calm serenity at home for which I seek? I picture my house nicely decorated and in my mind “just so.” But to tell the truth, it’s nowhere near; I still have miles to go. My counters and tables are cluttered, I should just put everything away; But some things have no place to go, so in the way they stay.

They have to clean this with me; after all, they live here too. They say that they will help me, and they swear to me it’s true. They’ll get to it eventually: “Calm down, Mom, you’ll see.” “We’ll get it all straightened out - neat as it can be.” I go get bags and boxes and open all the drawers; As I start to go through each thing, I find it gives me pause. Memories are now unlocked, and my mind just wanders to the past. What happened to my great resolve to purge this house at last? I now feel very tired, and I think I’ll go to bed; But then I see my bed is strewn with piles of clothes instead. What happened to the promises that I swore I’d keep? I’ll get to it tomorrow, but I have piles to move before I sleep!

Endangered Animal Fair Pamela Arcuri’s firstgrade class at Deer Park’s May Moore Primary School presented an endangered animal fair on June 4th, serving as the culmination of an extensive project that incorporated reading, writing, research, creative arts, technology and public speaking. The students worked cooperatively in groups to learn about six endangered animals – elephants, tigers, polar bears, sea turtles, cheetahs and blue whales – and share what they had discovered about their selected endangered animal, what dangers that species is facing and what humans can do to help. At the evening event,

open to visiting parents and families, six stations were set up in the school’s gym, one for each animal group. To prepare, the first-graders created news stories on the animals using the school’s green screen studio, prepared informational poster boards, made animal cutouts for taking “selfies” and set up laptops for visitors to sign online petitions to help save these species. They also collected donations to symbolically adopt the six endangered animals, and thanks to their generous families, raised more than $250, which will be put towards helping endangered animals.

“I commend Mrs. Arcuri and her first-graders on a job well done,” said Principal Alicia Konecny. “The children become experts!” In addition to exploring facts about the endangered animals, the children learned about taking care of the earth, and the threats to both animals and humans that are posed by global warming, pollution and habitat loss. At the fair, the students also provided examples of ways to help the earth, such as using less electricity and plastic. “I was so proud of all of my students and hope they carry these lessons with them into adulthood,” said Arcuri.

The Brittney Walsh Memorial Fund recognized three graduating seniors from the Walter G. O’Connell High School. Deer Park’s staff honoree was Dixon, a special education teacher at John F. Kennedy Intermediate School. Dixon has integrated a wide range of technology aspects in her classroom, including interactive whiteboard lessons, interactive table programs, iPads, iPod Touches, MacBooks and Google Chromebooks. This school year, technology has played an important role in the development of her fourthand fifth-grade students. She implemented group and independent work on the Google Chromebooks using such programs as Spelling City, to build fluency, decoding and phonics skill; Raz-Kids; and Reading A-to-Z, which develops reading comprehension through visual and auditory lessons. Lindenhurst Class of 1970 Reunion Set

The Suffolk County Vanderbilt Museum will celebrate the 65th anniversary of its official opening on July 6th. William K. Vanderbilt II - great-grandson of Cornelius Vanderbilt, the railroad and shipping magnate - died in 1944. His wife Rosamund continued to live in the Vanderbilt Mansion in Centerport until her death in 1947. He realized the potential for his sprawling estate to become a museum for what he called “the use, education and enjoyment of the general public.” That wish prompted him to leave his estate, and a trust fund to finance its operation, to Suffolk County. The county

opened the museum to the public on July 6th, 1950. The anniversary coincides with Arcadia Publishing’s release of Eagle’s Nest: The William K. Vanderbilt II Estate by Stephanie Gress, director of curatorial services for the museum. The book is available on the Arcadia Publishing, Amazon and Barnes & Noble websites, in the Vanderbilt Museum Gift Shop and at local bookstores. Today, the Vanderbilt estate and museum are an important part of Long Island history. It is a destination for regional visitors interested in natural history, the life of the oceans, armchair journeys through space,

and the history of the privileged life on the Gold Coast from the Jazz Age through the Second World War. The Vanderbilt’s Charles and Helen Reichert Planetarium is another magnet for visitors. The museum decided to add a planetarium in the late 1960s. Trustees knew a planetarium would enhance the museum’s ability to carry out the science-education aspect of its mission and to honor Mr. Vanderbilt’s love of science and astronomy, and his interest in celestial navigation. A planetarium also would augment the original Vanderbilt trust fund and help to ensure financial sustainability.

Big Changes Recently, I’ve made changes in my life that reflect the person who I want to become. I’ve decided I’m going to transfer to the University of Miami. Villanova was great and all, but it really didn’t provide the college experience I so desperately crave. Hopefully, my decision is the right one, and Miami fulfills my expectations of what college should be like. I’ve also decided that it is important to have a strong resume. I’ve had a pretty wellpaying job on Fire Island for the past few summers, but I now realize that money isn’t everything. This summer, I left that job in search of a resumebuilding opportunity. Now, I’m a data analyst. I’m hoping that it looks more impressive on a resume than being a bus boy. It does not pay as much, but I know it will be the right

choice in the long run. I’ve also elected to take an online course this summer. It is actually a pretty big sacrifice. For four hours per day, I’ll be sitting in a classroom. It’s basically like being back at college. Regardless, I believe it is the right choice for me as well. Hopefully, these tough decisions that I’m making now will pay off in the future. I can only hope that I’m doing the right things for my career. As I move forward, I hope I do not forget these values. It is important to me that I always progress. I never want to be stagnant in life. As the opportunities come my way, I look forward to taking advantage of them. Additionally, I want to make myself happy. The next three years at the University of Miami promise to be great ones.

The Cancer Center for Kids (CCFK) at WinthropUniversity Hospital held its Ninth Annual Black and White Ball at Oheka Castle on April 30th, an exquisite evening that raised more than $300,000 to benefit the CCFK’s essential psychosocial programs. The evening began with a warm welcome from Gala Emcee Sophia Hall of WCBS News Radio before Ashley Carlo, Manager at the CCFK,

introduced a compelling new video, 6 Minutes at the CCFK, to the packed house. Mark Weinblatt, MD, Chief, Pediatric Hematology and Oncology Director, Cancer Center for Kids, thanked everyone for their support and described the facility’s focus on superior medicine and the pursuit of new research opportunities. The event honored Donna-Marie Korth, a philanthropist and partner

at Certilman Balin Adler & Hyman, LLP. Dr. Weinblatt presented Ms. Korth with her award, and praised her tireless dedication to giving back to the Center’s children and families. “We can all agree that cancer and kids are two words you never want to hear in the same sentence,” remarked Ms. Korth in her acceptance speech. “But by adding just a few other words and making it The

Take Heart With Tea An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but a recent study found drinking tea might keep the cardiologist at bay.

The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad

cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent. Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the

risk of coronary heart disease. Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to

be potent weapons in the fight against heart disease. That news may be especially important

for women, given that heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.
