he Deer Park High School Jazz Ensemble traveled to Cleveland, Ohio to play at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on May 26th, and their performance was praised by both museum staff and visitors. United Way of Long Island is giving companies, organizations, families and friends the chance to battle for bragging rights on The Peconic River this summer by entering a four-person team in the annual Paddle Battle Long Island Team Challenge. The Paddle Battle will be held on Saturday, July 30th at the town docks in Riverhead with proceeds from the Team Challenge going to United Way of Long Island’s VetsBuild Program, as well the Long Island Aquarium. The Paddle Battle Team Challenge is a recreational Stand Up Paddle Board and Kayak race where groups will compete against each other for the coveted Paddle Battle Team Challenge trophy. The YMCA of Long Island announced today it has partnered with Stew Leonard III Children’s Charities to participate in the 7th annual World’s Largest Swimming Lesson™ on Friday, June 24th, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., to promote water safety. The momentous global event is one of the many ongoing YMCA of Long Island initiatives intended to educate individuals of all ages about the importance of practicing water safety skills. “Kids have a lot of fun at this event, but there is a very serious lesson being taught,” said Anne Brigis, President and CEO of the YMCA of Long Island. “Promoting water safety is a top priority at the Y all year, and it goes beyond teaching swim techniques. Aquatic directors at all of our branches teach skills to help swimmers of all
levels develop a sense of comfort and security in the water. Participating in this event will help bring much-needed awareness and skills that children and adults need to safely enjoy swimming this summer.” As part of the Annual World’s Largest Swimming Lesson™, more than 500 locations in over 20 countries

By: Jamie Lynn Ryan There are those who need to have every detail of each day planned down to the last minute, with little room for even the slightest compromise or delay. And then there are those individuals who prefer to fly by the seat of their pants; no blueprint, no nothing, open to whatever adventures might beckon. Me, I would definitely put myself in the former category. Routine is my friend; schedules my muse. There is something about the sense of accomplishment one gets from checking items off a “To Do” list that lends itself to peace of mind. Of course, life itself is not simply one giant “To Do” list. It requires a measure of flexibility and the ability to roll with those punches that may come flying your way. This is where that spontaneity comes into play. Case in point: I recently set out one Saturday afternoon to embark on a belated birthday
celebration for a close friend from high school. The plan – to head to the beach for our first, postMemorial Day outing, followed by dinner and maybe some prime sunset viewing and photography opportunities. “Happy Wanderers” we are, indeed. Of course, no sooner did I pack my beach bag, when the clouds rolled in, the winds kicked up and the sun disappeared behind a deep haze. Perfect sun bathing weather indeed. Alternate plans, anyone? Determined not to let the entire day go to waste, we feverishly started brainstorming, checking weather forecasts, tracking the storm radar and hoping for the best. Instead of heading out to the sand, we parked at Field #5 at Robert Moses and decided to take a little stroll over to Kismet, Fire Island for lunch, wander around a bit, and head back – hopefully before the skies decided to open up with the impending thunderstorm that had been threatening all day. Phase one went off without a
hitch, and the sun even managed to show itself for the majority of the journey. Imagine that. Phase two consisted of a quick little stopover at Gilgo Beach – after we both realized that neither of us had ever been there – before heading up to the Northport area for dinner and then to a laser light show at the Vanderbilt Planetarium. And then came the rains. Drenching, sheets of rain, pouring down on the windshield as we made our way down Ocean Parkway toward the bridge. Maybe there’ll be a rainbow, I mused, as I peered through the wipers. Then this detour will have been completely worth it, this trip to the beach on a cloudy day, interrupted by torrential rain, ending with one of nature’s most magical creations… And then, there it was, straight ahead, stretching over Cedar Beach. I looked at my friend and said, “Shall we pull over for a photo op?” Of course. Always time for a quick detour.

Hennessey and several other JFK students who entered the contest were asked to create drawings that represented Stew Leonard’s “farm fresh produce.” The company chose two designs from entries they received from students across Long Island. Hennessey’s design will be printed on new reusable bags available for sale at Stew Leonard’s beginning in August, with proceeds from the sales of the bags to be used for Stew Leonard’s charitable donations on behalf of sick children. Seniors Earn Scholarships The dedicated and hardworking leaders of Deer Park High School’s Class of 2016 earned more than $75,000 in scholarships at the school’s annual Senior Awards, held in the auditorium on June 9th. The awards, bestowed by teachers, administrators, local politicians and community members, served to honor a diverse array of student achievements, both in school and throughout the community. After a sterling performance by the high school’s jazz ensemble, led by director Jerry Cannarozzo, Student Council President Papri

DeMarco announced today that the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Incarcerated Youth Initiative has been recognized with a 2016 Achievement Award from the National Association of Counties (NACo). The awards are granted to counties for programs that serve to improve services to county residents, and are judged on their innovativeness, effectiveness, and for delivering results. The Sheriff’s Office received the award in the category of Criminal Justice and Public Safety. Sheriff DeMarco, who is also the Chairman of the County’s Criminal Justice Coordinating Council, launched the Incarcerated Youth Initiative in 2011 and has since cut the youthful jail population by 75%.
