Costello’s Ace Hardware It all began back in 1976. Our country was going through a terrible recession. Our local economy was devastated. At this time, founder Vincent Costello was forced to close his air conditioning and heating contracting business. Looking for a means to support his wife and 10 children, Vinnie stumbled upon a business opportunity, a retail hardware store. Originally opened 1973, it was a small, neglected, under-stocked store of barely over 2,000 square feet located in Deer Park. With no previous retail experience and no other options, Vinnie courageously embarked on a journey that few would ever have dared. Sales were dismal and the store was in desperate need of attention. He worked every day for 5 years and managed to make the store profitable. While most would have been satisfied with this miraculous feat, Vinnie was determined to grow beyond that one small store. By refinancing his home, he opened a second location in 1982. This 5,000 square foot industrial store was also located in Deer Park, on the other side of town.
In 1988, another opportunity arose. A shopping center was being constructed in the little-known town of Nesconset. It wasn’t the most populated area, but Vinnie had lived there for over ten years and he thought that the residents of Nesconset would respond well to a neighborhood hardware store. Did they ever! The 4,000 square foot store was an instant success, managing to be profitable from the day it opened. Over the next four years, the success of that store helped fuel the expansion of the company to larger stores in Farmingdale and Central Islip. During those early growing years, his children worked in the business and contributed to its success. Their dad taught them the importance of taking care of the customers. “Treat them like family,” he would say. He taught them how to solve their problems and how to learn from them. Most importantly, he taught them that the most sacred bond between them and their customers is trust. In 2001, with Vinnie’s encouragement and guidance, six of his children opened a 25,000 square foot store

in Bellmore. This store was the size of all of the other locations combined - it was huge! It seemed impossible to find enough products to fill it. It took some time, but eventually they had a successful home center. This hardware/home center concept has continued over the past nine years in Massapequa Park, Farmingdale, Bethpage, New Hyde Park, Island Park, Centereach, West Islip, North Massapequa, Northport, West Babylon, Garden City Park, Smithtown, East Islip, Rocky Point, Great Neck and Copiague. The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, (LICADD) has teamed up with WALK 97.5 FM Radio to produce a series of public service messages focused on the fight against Long Island’s growing heroin epidemic. Grammy Award winning lead singer, Pat Monahan, from the band TRAIN, along with Christina Perry and members of A Great Big World, have lent their talent, support and voices to these messages. Cliff “Kip” Johannesen, (who at one point was paralyzed and in a wheelchair) but now is able to walk with the assistance of canes is offering his services as a U.S. Coast Guard Licensed Captain and P.A.D.I Master Diver to people with disabilities in the Long Island/NYC area. With his boat, docked in Lindenhurst, he is volunteering his spare time to take children with disabilities (along with a parent or guardian) or disabled veterans on fishing, snorkeling and boating trips in the Great South Bay.

Developmental Disabilities Institute (DDI), the leading service provider for children and adults with autism on Long Island, was selected as a 2014-2015 National Association of Special Education Teachers (NASET) School of Excellence. DDI’s Children’s Day Program, which serves children from ages 5 through twenty one, was selected for this honor. “This award solidifies our mission that our founders created over 50 years ago, to support children and adults with developmental disabilities in achieving a lifetime of growth through exceptional care and innovative, individualized service,” commented DDI Executive Director John Lessard. Selection as a NASET School of Excellence is the highest level of recognition a private special education school can achieve through the NASET professional association. This honor is presented to private special education schools that meet rigorous professional criteria and have demonstrated truly exceptional dedication, commitment and achievement in the field of special education. No Bullies Allowed Students at Saints Cyril and Methodius School (SSCM) in Deer Park had a worthwhile reality check on some tough topics just in time for the lazy days of summer. As part of the Suffolk County Police Department’s Community Response Bureau’s School Resource Officer Program, Officer George Lynagh was inhouse for a week’s worth of crucial talks with students at every level from Pre-K through Eighth Grade - and somehow, he managed to make his visits with each classroom entertaining and engaging for all! His topics included important early discussions with the younger students such as 911-Stranger Safety and Internet Smarts, as well as hard-hitting subjects such as Violence, Cyber-Bullying, and The Truth on Tobacco. Fifth graders paused for a pose with the good “Officer George” after his Tobacco talk with the group. His gentle method of communicating the dangers of tobacco to the youngsters seemed to really hit home as he walked them through the impact of both the short-term and long-term effects of this legal drug. Critical to such a conversation with impressionable youth, Officer George’s tone is never judgmental with the students at any age and the students seemed to be soaking in not just the intel he shared on the best way to say no under pressure, but also
ways that they can be supportive of the people in their lives (parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and friends) who have found themselves taken in by this highly addictive substance. It’s evident from the way he communicates with the
students that the most important thing to him is that they develop into young men and women who are capable of making good decisions for themselves. Never once did the words, “Just Say No” hit his slide deck; instead he shares powerful video clips with the children, some funny, some sad and all impactful.
Making sure that the students also understand that the easiest way to not get hooked is to never start in the first place, Officer George reminds the students that if they’ve got loved ones in their lives who smoke cigarettes, “none of them are bad people; they just made one bad decision many years ago and now that habit is the hardest thing for them to break.” Every hand was raised as Officer George made his way through his very interactive presentations and each student left with the intended pearls of wisdom, session after session. Many thanks to the Suffolk County Police Department and the Community Response Bureau for this excellent program! Officer George has personally come to Saints Cyril and Methodius for over ten years now and the students are always a-buzz over his visits as they mature along with the insightful new topics they can look forward to upon his return. From community outreach such as distributing free hams and turkeys during the holidays for families in need to their gun buy-back program and prescription drug disposal anonymous drop boxes, the SCPD’s Community Response Bureau is an invaluable resource to our communities and Officer George is a blessing to the students of SSCM.

GIRL SCOUT GOLD - The Girl Scouts of Suffolk County’s Gold Award Ceremony was held at Watermill Caterer’s in Smithtown recently. At the ceremony, Councilwoman Jacqueline Gordon and Councilman Tom Donnelly presented Girl Scouts from the Town of Babylon with official Town certificates to mark their great achievement. Five Deer Park students proved winners in Assemblyman Andrew P. Raia’s “There Ought To Be A Law…” poster contest, including three students from John F. Kennedy Intermediate School and two from May Moore Primary School. The imaginative students received awards in a recent ceremony at the Perry Duryea State Building in Hauppauge. The winning legal suggestions were “Longer recess” from third-grader Kaitlyn Burke, “Always wear your helmet when riding your bike” from
fourth-grader Adriana Harrilal, “Don’t kill animals, don’t cut down trees” from fourth-grader Cristina Schiaffo, “Never eat gum and swallow it” from first-grader Lillian Finamore and “Don’t drive with animals loose in the car” from first-grader Ryan Pichardo. “We are very proud of all the Deer Park students who entered the contest because they felt there was a need to create these new laws,” said JFK Principal Susan Bonner. “We encourage their creativity and hope they take Mr. Raia up on his offer to join him
in Albany sometime soon to enhance their learning and add to this wonderful experience.”
