In a final between two Long Island Junior Soccer League (LIJSL) teams, the Deer Park Wolfpack defeated the Farmingdale Fury, 2-1, to win the BoysUnder-14 State Open Cup of the Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA). Deer Park received the new Rocco Amoroso Cup as Boys-Under-14 champions. The namesake of the award has been inducted into the Halls of Fame of the LIJSL and Eastern New York plus was honored as a Life Member by U.S. Soccer. Amoroso started the LIJSL Sportsmanship Program

in 1980, it has since been copied around the world and he has spoken about the benefits of Fair Play across the United States. “Farmingdale is an extremely good team and has been so for quite some time. Deer Park, on the other hand, took a longer road to get to this level,” commented Deer Park coach Joe McGarty about the final. “I thought the game was evenly played and fought. I felt that we created the more dangerous chances and I think my players just worked a little harder because they had a desire

to prove it was no fluke they were in the final.” Joseph Leon scored Deer Park’s first goal off an assist from Samuel Escobar. The winning goal was created when Leon was tripped near the goal and Escobar converted the penalty kick. Deer Park also received the Howard Rubinstein Sportsmanship Award and a $2,000 check from Eastern New York to defer their costs during the National Championship Series. They will be playing in the Regionals from June 26 to 30 in Barboursville, West Virginia.

Gifts To Remember Students in Deer Park High School’s mentoring program recently held an inaugural tie dye event, creating original tie dye designs on T-shirts as gifts for their “little brothers and little sisters” at the district’s two primary schools, John Quincy Adams and May Moore. The mentoring program provides younger students

with a big brother or big sister to help them with homework as well as providing good, positive role models to look up to. The high schoolers presented the shirts to the JQA and May Moore students at parties celebrating the end of the mentoring season. “This is the first year we are giving the little ones

gifts to remember their mentors by,” said program adviser Beth Kabaservice. “The mentors loved it, and it is nice that they will be able to give their kids a little bit of love to hold onto for the rest of the year. We wanted to show them that we appreciate them as much as they appreciate us.”

Well, it’s happened. Still days away from the official start of summer, and already the first utterings of “it’s too hot” have been heard. After one of the most bitterly cold, snowiest winters on record, one that seemed to stretch on far past its allotted time, and we can’t even appreciate the warmth for more than a day. What is it that makes our society so…unsatisﬁed? comment that it’s “such a beautiful day,” we are more often than not in a constant state of complaint. Sure, any extreme can be “too much” for some to handle; but, I think we’ve become so accustomed to the temperaturecontrolled bubbles that we live in that our sensitivity to such things is absurdly heightened. Seasons are designed to be enjoyed outdoors, at least for part of the time. Personally, I look forward to the warmth of spring and summer, the extended daylight hours and the ample activities available – from free concerts to baseball games to outdoor theatre and dance performances to

fireworks…the options are endless. The last thing I want to do is spend my time hibernating in a dimlylit, air-conditioned cave of sorts, one with all the windows shut, blinds drawn and outside world blocked out. No thank you. Let’s put things in perspective, people. We don’t live in a desert. We live on an island, one bordered by beaches on every coast. In between, there are lakes and rivers and plenty of pools of both the indoor and outdoor variety. I’m sure we can manage to survive a few months of summer. Maybe, if we really try, we might even manage to enjoy it.

Building a strong sense of citizenship and responsibility, fourthgraders in Marie Marck’s classroom at Deer Park’s John F. Kennedy Intermediate School stepped up to support those in need through two fundraising efforts during the school year. Last October, the students collected more than $623 for UNICEF

through Chores for Kids, with the students volunteering to do chores at home in exchange for donations. Recently, due to their awareness of needs around the world, the students organized a quick second fundraiser for the Red Cross to help areas of Nepal devastated by earthquakes. They studied maps and areas of impact, taking turns during lunch

periods to advertise the need for earthquake relief, and collected more than $450 in donations. “Each year I am amazed at the response from children when they are called to action,” said Marck. “This class has not only helped people in need, but they gained a valuable experience that will help them develop into great citizens.”

The Long Island Coalition Against Bullying is holding its first annual golf outing on Friday, June 26th, with a 1:30 p.m. shotgun start at Rock Hill Golf & Country Club at 105 Clancy Road in Manorville. Babylon Town Board Councilman Thomas Donnelly, a Deer Park resident and the cochairman of the town’s Beautification Committee, attended the meeting to laud and present awards to both the students involved and the school board. The anti-litter campaign, a component of the Town of Babylon’s Beautification

Program, culminated in a day of cleaning roads and public spaces of litter in a celebration of community pride. The Deer Park volunteers, spearheaded by Board Vice President Donna Marie Elliot, were among the 200 who removed 12,290 pounds of garbage at the April 24th event.

Chosen To Attend Doc Deer Park High School students Hanife Ozbay and Alec Winters were recently chosen as special guests to attend the premiere screening of Ken Burns’ new documentary, “Cancer: The Emperor of All Maladies,” held at the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in Manhattan. Produced by Burns and directed by Barak Goodman, the film was based on the Pulitzer Prize winning book, “The Emperor of All Maladies:

A Biography of Cancer,” written by Siddhartha Mukherjee. The six-hour PBS documentary focused on the history of cancer from its beginnings in Egypt to the modern day, and the efforts of doctors and researchers throughout the years to remedy the disease. The Deer Park students, accompanied by teacher Janet Werner, were treated to a limo ride to Lincoln Center for the preview, where they were given the red carpet treatment. Prior

to the event, the students toured the cancer labs at Stony Brook University Hospital, meeting cancer research doctors and hospital staff. The event at Lincoln Center was hosted by Burns and Katie Couric. Doctors, scientists, cancer researchers, celebrities and all those who had a hand in creating the film – including the patients who were highlighted and their families – were in attendance.

The sterling sound of well-rehearsed young musicians filled the auditorium at Deer Park High School during backto-back spring concerts on May 27th and 28th, to the delight of an enthusiastic audience of parents, family and friends. The performances provided an admirable benchmark for a year of hard work for the students. On the second night, Deer Park’s chamber orchestra and director Kathryn Attard began the festivities with a rousing rendition of the first movement of Bach’s fifth Brandenburg Concerto, featuring Kalvin Guyer on violin, Aaron Zhang on harpsichord and Megan Zhang on flute. On Mascagni’s “Intermezzo Sinfonico,” Artist in residence Brad Bosenbeck shined on organ and Susan Mann on harp. Bosenbeck and fellow percussionists

Alyssa Saldano and Kailey Tenn were featured on Balmages’ “Lyric Metal.” Next up were the wind ensemble, led by director Jerry Cannarozzo, impressing the crowd with dramatic pieces such as Rossano Gallante’s “Beyond the Horizon” and Steven Reineke’s “Fate of the Gods.” before closing with a take on James Bond soundtracks. “These spring concerts were the culmination of a school year’s worth of rehearsal and practice,” said Cannarozzo. “I was extremely proud of the students’ performance and the concert was well received.” The school’s chorus, directed by Catherine Lubrano, sang several stirring numbers such as Lady Jane Scott’s “Annie Laurie” and Marta Keen’s “Homeward Bound.” The select choir came to the fore on a stunning

rendition of Eric William Barnum’s “The Sounding Sea.” Members of the senior guitar ensemble joined the seniors in the chorus for the closing “Hold Onto the Memories,” by Corey Tynan. “It was an extremely beautiful concert,” said Lubrano. “The chorus produced an unbelievable sound, and I couldn’t be happier with the performance.” The night also marked the final concert season for Dr. Jeff S. Dailey, the district’s director of fine and performing arts, who is retiring. “The performances at this year’s spring concerts in all the buildings were exceptional,” said Dailey. “I leave Deer Park knowing that the music program is strong, and trust the community will continue to support music education in the district, well into the future.”
