he Deer Park High School Marching Falcons, led by director Jerry Cannarozzo, marched in the Deer Park Memorial Day parade on May 26th. The 150-piece marching band joined other bands and organizations in honoring service members who have died while serving in the U.S. armed forces. The Best & The Brightest By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Last night, I had the privilege of attending the annual Press Club of Long Island Media Awards, held at the Woodbury Country Club, honoring the best and the brightest of Long Island’s Journalists. This is the one night each year when we, as members of the press, have the opportunity to recognize fellow protectors of the First Amendment and to mix and mingle with those we admire from afar, on the pages of the weekly and daily newspapers, the
magazines and blogs, over the broadcast airwaves… but rarely have the opportunity to personally acknowledge. This year, as an added bonus, PCLI honored past Outstanding Journalists as part of their initial class of Hall of Fame inductees. To see these giants of the industry assembled before a crowd of their peers was easily the highlight of an evening that had many memorable moments. It is nights like this that remind me why I chose to go into the field of Journalism to begin

Two Deer Park High School seniors and DECA members, Richard Jacullo and Andreas Stamatakis, recently finished in the top 10 at this year’s Financial Services Team Decision Making event at DECA’s International Career Development Conference. More than 17,000 students from the U.S., Canada, Guam, Germany and Puerto Rico competed in the event, held in Atlanta. Preparing them for this competition, the team of Jacullo and Stamatakis had earned prior awards for their work with DECA, a career and technical student organization that prepares business students for careers in marketing, finance, hospitality, management,
and other business areas. The two Deer Park students won first place in Suffolk County back in January, and finished second in New York State in March. “This is the best finish internationally for Deer Park students in more than 10 years,” said Deer Park business teacher Gregory Menig, the school’s DECA adviser. “Both boys were extremely motivated to make it to ICDC this
year and decided back in September that working as a team might improve their chances of winning. The competitions consist of a multiple choice exam and a role-playing scenario, so they worked hard studying old exams and practicing role playing.” Out of nearly 7,000 New York DECA members at the competition, Stamatakis

Students at Deer Park’s May Moore Primary School learned all about kites and the world of flight in a three-part Kites In The Classroom springtime project. First, each class was given a kite tutorial and set of kites to decorate in class. Next, a representative from Long Island’s Cradle of Aviation Museum visited with the students to deliver a presentation on the history
of kites. In the culminating activity, when the weather finally permitted, each of May Moore’s classes had the opportunity to take their kites out onto the school field for a breezy test flight. “We were so excited to bring the Kites in the Classroom project here to May Moore,” said Principal Alicia Konecny. “Flying a kite is a quintessential childhood activity, but 90

percent of early elementary school children have never flown one. What better way to integrate learning about the physics of flight and the history of kites than to construct one and fly it? Escobar’s project, “Heating Oil,” earned him fifth place and a $200 scholarship prize. Korsiak was awarded seventh place and $125 for his project, “The Effects
