The Long Island-based credit union NEFCU has awarded 82 students from high schools across Long Island each with a $500 voucher to use toward their college education, as part of its annual Making a Difference Scholarship program. In total, NEFCU granted $41,000 to graduating seniors from local high schools across Long Island. The individual winners will be announced
in June at their respective high school’s scholarship award ceremonies. Each participating high school’s guidance department selected one graduating senior of its choice based on a minimum four-year average of 90%, as well as service to his or her community and school. Since the Making a Difference Scholarship program’s inception more than 10 years ago, NEFCU
has awarded more than $1,000,000 to Long Island high school and college students. In addition to meeting the academic qualifications and outstanding service to both their school and their community, each student must attend a two- or fouryear college or university after graduating this spring. Tickets Anyone? By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Summer concert season is upon us! I have to admit, I went a little ticket crazy this time around. The instant the Jones Beach schedule was posted, I eagerly scanned it for shows I wanted to see, and then scoured the internet for any special pre-sales, Groupons, etc. that I could find. The problem – well, a temporary inconvenience, as the case may be – is that some summer tours seem to be announced earlier each year and, while there are plenty eager to attend, few people are willing, or able, to commit to such expenses in the middle of Christmas shopping. Me, I ignore such … what’s the word … logic? Rather, I
am of the philosophy that, if you want to do something badly enough, why should you wait for tickets to be sold out and appear on resale sites for triple the price? Spontaneity is key – just press that “purchase” button and worry about minor details like cost and finding a concert companion later! Of course, needless to say, after realizing that I had accumulated tickets to about seven or eight shows over these next several months, I began to panic. Slightly. Trying to remember who likes what types of music, the corresponding dates, times, locations, the cost factor … it’s a bit like being an event planner, desperately trying to fill each slot appropriately. The ultimate
goal, of course, is to not find myself solo the day of the show, contemplating a.) going by myself, b.) attempting to resell the tickets, or c.) worst of all, losing the money laid out and not going at all. A truly lose/lose situation. By the time you read this, I will have attended concert number one (guest confirmed, tickets paid in full), with numbers two and three to follow shortly in the coming week. A bit of overkill, I know. But that’s what summer is all about – enjoying the great outdoors with family and friends, taking in some music, film, culture … whatever the case may be. This is what we look forward to all year. Let’s not forget to savor it now that it’s arrived.

Marine Biology is an area that truly interests me. Villanova cannot provide a major or minor in that field. With any luck, I will not regret my decision. It may seem like a big move now, but I think it is a very positive change. I do not want to waste my college years. I want to experience life, not succumb to a slow and painful career in a cubicle. I am looking forward to spending the next three years on a sandy beach with my friends. I am ready to make this change because I am confident it will be the right one. Although I’ve always struggled with decisions, this one really takes the cake. I’ve gone back and forth for months, but I have finally made my decision - and I’m really looking forward to the next three years.

Due to these developments, I’ve decided to transfer from Villanova University to the University of Miami. It may not seem like the greatest move on paper, but I know that it is the right decision. The Long Island Heart Ball is an annual social event held to recognize outstanding accomplishments of individuals and companies in the area of cardiovascular science and leadership. This year’s event was chaired by Allan H. Cohen, Esq., Managing Partner, Long Island, Nixon Peabody LLP. The 52nd Annual Heart Ball honored Scott L. Schubach, MD, FACC, Chairman, Department of Cardiovascular Thoracic Surgery, WinthropUniversity Hospital. Dr. Schubach received the 2015 Cardiovascular Science Award. Joseph R. Ficalora, President & Chief Executive Officer, New York Community Bancorp, Inc. received the 2015 Corporate Leadership Award. Museum Visit Deer Park High School social studies teacher Vanessa Whitney and her students recently visited the National September 11 Memorial & Museum in lower Manhattan to participate in a workshop which reviewed the events of the day leading up to the collapse of the World Trade Center towers in 2001. The high schoolers were then sent out as “student

investigators” to analyze artifacts throughout the museum such as the Vesey Street “Survivors’ Stairs,” the North Tower antenna and a crushed truck from New York Fire Department Ladder Company 3, all while walking along the footprints of the original towers. One student was able to trace the name of her father’s childhood friend at the South Pool
fountain. “The museum and surrounding fountains truly honor those we lost on that tragic day,” said Whitney. “It was a truly touching and emotional experience for all of us, and so important for the students to understand the significance of the events in not only our nation’s history, but also its future.”

Demonstrating the progressing talent of Deer Park’s younger musicians and the vitality of the district’s music programs, students at John F. Kennedy Intermediate School performed in annual spring concerts on May 18th, playing in a variety of choral, orchestra and band ensembles for
both peers by day and parent audiences in the evening. For the closing piece from the fourth- and fifthgrade chorus, a rendition of Sara Bareilles’ “Brave,” student singers displayed banners they had created with an anti-bullying theme. The featured accompanist for the song
was fifth-grade drummer Ashlynn McHugh. According to choir director Kristen Lombardo, McHugh learned to play the drum part in less than a month. McHugh and classmates Anthony Aguilar and Tovia Manning also performed percussion on a striking Swahili song, “Dansi Na Kuimba.”

The entry fee is $1,250 per boat. For sports fishermen who would like to get in on the competition but do not own a boat, the Star Island Yacht Club Charter Boat fishing fleet is available for hire for either one day or both days of the tournament. Each of Star Island’s boats can accommodate up to six anglers. Star Island wishes to advise all prospective participants that, as per Environmental Conservation Law 130338, New York State law now requires that all shark tournament participants use non-stainless steel non-offset circle hooks exclusively. Dockage is available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Transient rates for the tournament are $5.50 per foot for up to 59 feet, $6.00 per foot for 60 feet and up. Utilities are $30 for 30-amp and singlecord 50-amp service and $50 for two-cord 50-amp service. In addition, Star Island now has high-speed fuel pumps. Arts & Sciences While serving as the site for the district’s annual budget vote and board election on May 19th, Deer Park High School welcomed the community with an exciting array of activities and displays highlighting the creativity
and talent of students from each of the district’s schools. As visiting families wandered the halls, they enjoyed an art fair, Shakespearian scene performances, a science fair in the gymnasium. In
the cafeteria, elementary students from John F. Kennedy Intermediate School and John Quincy Adams and May Moore primary schools learned about civics by participating in a mock vote.
Gaining Life Skills For the third year in a row, Deer Park High School students from the SADD Club, Gay-Straight Alliance, Student Council and Students Against Bullying Club learned valuable life skills while attending the Compassion Without Borders conference, held this year
at Bay Shore High School. While at the conference, more than 200 students from 25 different Suffolk County schools participated in studentrun workshops regarding tolerance, compassion and friendship, and listened to a speech by guest speaker Dennard Mitchel.
“Mr. Mitchel’s focus was on overcoming adversities in life, making good choices and being successful,” said SADD adviser Janet Werner. “His blend of comedy and humor held the attention of all of the students in attendance.”

Caring For The Community
Students in Paula Behrens’ child psychology and development class at Deer Park High School are providing caring support for teens, moms and babies at the local Madonna Heights center in Dix Hills as part of a dedicated community service project. They coordinated a baby product drive, and made welcome bags for newcomers to the residential school, which provides struggling adolescent and teen girls with opportunity for growth in a therapeutic educational environment.
The five-week drive resulted in the donation of hundreds of donated diapers, wipes and even baby formula packages, collected by Deer Park students and staff. The students also handwrote letters containing personalized messages of caring and support to other teens to encourage healing and strength, which were included in the packages to Madonna Heights. “It’s important to reach out to help people in our own community,” said senior Kallie Ohanian, who volunteers at Madonna
Heights. “It’s exciting to know that our small acts of caring – like putting together welcome bags containing writing journals, gel pens and a soft stuffed animal – will make a big difference to someone who is struggling to transition to a new school or new place to live. “We are proud that students jumped at the opportunity to become a resource in their own community,” said Behrens. “After all, without a sense of caring, there can be no community.” CUP CHAMPIONS - Congratulations to the Deer Park WolfPack BU14 soccer team for winning the New Your State Cup Finals on Saturday, June 30th, in LaGrangeville NY against the previously ranked #1 team in the state. Coach Joe McGarty has never been prouder of any team he has coached and wants his players to know that. This is only the 2nd State Cup Championship in DP Club history. Good luck in the Regionals at the end of the month in West Virginia!

Camp Invention Camp Invention, a national educational program recognized for fostering innovative thinking, real-world problem solving and the spirit of invention, is coming to Robert Frost Middle School in Deer Park from July 6th-10th, 2015. The weeklong day camp experience for students entering grades 1-6 encourages inventive young minds through hands-on problem solving, using science, technology,
engineering and mathematics in a fun and creative atmosphere. Camp Invention was founded by Inductees of the National Inventors Hall of Fame. Programming is developed through partnerships with the United States Patent and Trademark Office and inspired by Inductees of the Hall of Fame and finalists of the Collegiate Inventors Competition. The St. John the Baptist Diocesan High School Performing Arts Department brought more than 160 members to compete against more than 25 other ensembles in the Music in the Parks Festival at Hershey Park in Pennsylvania. Each ensemble worked throughout the year to prepare a number of pieces that they performed in front of seasoned judges on May 15th. As the judges read their evaluations it became clear that this would be a banner day for SJB. The day included five first place finishes and four ratings of superior, the highest rating. The specific results are listed below: • Band - First place for jazz bands - Superior rating • Jazz Band - Best overall Jazz Band • Jazz Band - Best
featured soloist - John Piazza, Drums • Wind Ensemble - Third place for concert bands – Excellent rating • Orchestra - First place for string orchestras Superior rating • Percussion Ensemble – First place for percussion ensembles – Good rating • Bel Canto Chorale – First place for women’s chorus – Superior Rating • Himphonix - First place for men’s choir – Superior Rating Mr. Christopher Donohue, Chairman of the Performing Arts department, proudly called the results “a testament to the tremendous dedication, talent, and hard work of our students and teachers” that “confirms the level of skill an accomplishment
that [the teachers] see in classes every day.” After a highly successful competition, SJB students spent the next day enjoying the rides and attractions at Hershey Park. Director of Choirs Mr. Jared Berry stated, “It was a wonderful experience for the students. They worked so diligently and were then able to unwind and have fun together.” To finish their week each ensemble performed to a packed Dunne Auditorium with an eager audience for the Spring Instrumental and Vocal Concerts. Donohue concluded, “It’s really been a banner year. To have so many All-State and All-County award recipients, carry the day at this competition, and play to a full auditorium is a true testament to the quality and growth of our program.”
