Angels Revisited By: Jamie Lynn Ryan And now, a selection from the archives, published June 2008... This past Memorial Day weekend, the Navy’s Blue Angels returned to the Island for their annual turn as one of the Jones Beach Air Show’s featured attractions. Even though it’s just a short drive down Ocean Parkway, my family and I have never managed to get out there to witness the spectacle up close and in person. Too much traffic, too many people, too much of a hassle… This year, though, I realized that the planes would be practicing right around the corner at Republic Airport during the week leading up to the show. And so, on Friday afternoon, a friend and I made a point of taking a ride down to the Airport Plaza shopping center to see if we could catch a glimpse. A glimpse? Try witnessing all six of the planes whizzing overhead and whoknows-what speed, close enough so that we could read the numbers on them! What a sight!

If only I had my camera, I thought. Well, after that close call, I decided to make it my mission to get a shot of them flying to or from the air show over the weekend, since I knew they would cross over my house on their flight down to the beach. Saturday afternoon, as I heard them approach, I ran out with my camera – only to catch the cloud of dust they had left in their wake. Okay, I thought, I’ll just wait here on the deck – listening to the simulcast on the radio – until I hear them wrapping up their routine. Then, all I have to do is aim my camera for the sky and I can’t miss them! Easier said than done. I saw them coming, all right. The problem was it’s a little hard to frame something moving at hundreds of miles an hour in your camera lens before it’s passed you by. I managed to snap one shot as they approached, which, after the camera’s natural delay, resulted in a rather fuzzy shot of the planes whizzing right out of the frame. There’s always tomorrow, I thought. The next morning, I drove

down to the local town beach and waited, poised for the approach. Sure enough, I saw the HC-130 slowly making its way south, a sure sign that the six Blue Angels were not far behind. And then… out of the clouds they came – all six, flying in perfect formation. And again, I was only able to get just one shot before I lost track of the formation. I followed their flight into the distance, where I was actually able to view most of the theatrics which followed, albeit from a great distance. I imagine it was much better up close, but hey – not a bad seat on my beach either! I must have stood there for a solid 30 minutes, watching the back and forth, up and down, looping motion of the jets, until at last, they began their return trip to Republic. This time, I got it. One...two… three shots as they came closer and closer – still a little blurred, but sharp against the clear blue sky. Finally! As they flew off into the distance, I heard one bystander mumble, “There they go – our tax dollars at work.” But she was smiling.

Deer Park High School hosted a districtwide STEAM Expo for the community on budget vote night, showcasing student artwork, musical and theatrical performances, a science fair, and technology demonstrations. The May 17th evening

event highlighted the district’s strong science, technology, art and music programs while entertaining visiting voters and families. Highlights included music by the Robert Frost Middle School Chamber Choir and

Chamber Orchestra, Shakespeare performances by the Deer Park High School Shakespeare Club and drama classes, improvisation by Robert Frost eighth-grade theater arts students.

Mock Trial Held The Town of Babylon Youth Court spent a recent evening participating in a “mock trial,” where members of the Court deliberate over a legal dispute while audience members serve as a jury. The mock trial presentation - The People v. Adrian Vega - focused on the issue of Miranda rights, the theme for this year’s

Law Day celebration. Town of Babylon Councilwoman Jackie Gordon joined Councilman Tom Donnelly, Suffolk County Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory, and Suffolk County Police Commissioner Tim Sini in attendance. The Youth Court was established in 2006 as a means to reduce juvenile delinquency through

Band-Aid Project Kristin Schuster, a student at Deer Park’s Robert Frost Middle School, recently spearheaded the BandAid Project, helping to earn her Girl Scout Silver Award while helping her school celebrate autism awareness and acceptance. A total of 142 students took part in the event on March 23rd, wearing bandaids across their mouths for the duration of the school day, preventing them from speaking while

still participating in all of their classes. In order to communicate, each of these students brought a writing instrument to school, and used whiteboard or paper and pencil to write out responses. At the end of the day, the students reported to the Frost cafeteria to remove their band-aids and share their experiences with the group. Working with teacher Tom Locasio and film students, Schuster then created a video

presentation on the BandAid Project. The resulting film, edited and produced by Locasio, was shown in classrooms on May 6th to coincide with Frost’s firstever Autism Acceptance Day. “This project was a labor of love for so many of us and Kristin made it easy,” said speech teacher Stephanie O’Connell. “She is truly a remarkable young woman.” BAND-AID PROJECT - Kristin Schuster led 141 other students at Deer Park’s Robert Frost Middle School in celebrating the Band-Aid Project for autism acceptance. Science Students Compete Six scientific students from Deer Park’s John F. Kennedy Intermediate School were winners in the school’s science fair, advancing to compete at the Brookhaven National Laboratory Elementary School Science Fair on May 7th against representatives

from schools across Suffolk County. The JFK science winners were third-graders Cassidy Boltz and Aiden Magali, fourth-graders Ava Gutierrez and Mia Skoubas, and fifth-graders Alexis Adragna and Michelle D’Antonio.

“I am so proud of all the students that had the curiosity and determination to ask a big question, conduct the research and reach an amazing conclusion,” said science lab coordinator Joyce Carmen.

Touring the Amazon After studying the ecology and importance of rainforests, Pam Arcuri’s first-graders at Deer Park’s May Moore Primary School turned their classroom into a simulated Amazon

rainforest and invited families in to take an educational tour. Some of the children served as tour guides, while others were organized in groups around the

classroom where they presented information on topics including general rainforest information, plants and animals that live in the Amazon, the importance of rainforests to the earth and the dangers that rainforests are facing. The student groups created project boards, and each student prepared information to present to the visitors. The project also encouraged helping to save the rainforests, with laptops set up to enable visitors to sign petitions.
