Events ranged from the 100-meter dash and 3,200-meter race to pole vault, high jump, long/ triple jump and various throwing competitions. Congratulations on a job well done!

Lawlor Memorial Golf Classic and Dinner at the Huntington Country Club, located at 483 West Main Street in Huntington. Memorial Golf Outing
There is a video making its rounds on the social media circuit, showcasing what can only be described as the sorry state of our education system. One after another, various beachgoers were interviewed on the shores of our very own Jones Beach over this past Memorial Day weekend, asked questions ranging from “Who did we fight in the Revolutionary War?” to “What side of the Civil War was Abraham Lincoln associated with?” to “What country attacked us at Pearl Harbor?” The answers? Some of the best gems were “France” (our opponents in the War for Independence), “The South” (50/50 shot, people) and every nation from “China” to “Russia” to “Korea” to, you
guessed it, “France.” So much for the “date which will live in infamy,” right? And all this was to determine who, if anyone, could explain why we began commemorating Memorial Day in the first place. Judging by the aforementioned answers, not too many history buffs among us. The best part was that most, if not all, of the interviewees were clearly high school or college age, leading to the question: what exactly are they learning in school these days? Sure, I can’t tell you the details of every historical event which occurred over the course of the last several centuries, but the basics? Those are pretty hard to forget. And when I was actually in school, studying for exams every other week and writing term papers on such topics? It would have been difficult not to retain at least something, anything.
It’s a sad state of affairs when you are blissfully ignorant of your own nation’s battle for independence and how you came to enjoy such freedoms as frolicking on the beach on a “holiday” weekend, having no clue how such occasion came into fruition. Sure it’s funny and entertaining to watch as you’re scrolling through the Facebook newsfeed; but when you take a step back and realize that these are the people with whom you coexist on a daily basis, some from your own generation, it becomes pretty disconcerting. I wonder how many of these individuals grabbed their smartphones and Googled the answers following their failed interviews. For those keeping score at home: 1.) Britain, 2.) North and 3.) Japan. They may want to grab a history book and fill in the rest.

Middle school students from Saints Cyril and Methodius School (SSCM) in Deer Park had the opportunity to participate in the 12th Annual Catholic Middle School Mock Trial Program, hosted by St. John’s University School of Law. Hundreds gathered to witness these young minds in action as they tackled a civil case and honed their public speaking skills. The program, organized by Michael A. Simons, Dean of St. John’s Law, and Paul Clagnaz, Principal of St. Brigid/Our Lady of Hope Regional School, is
generously sponsored by the Law Firm of Duffy & Duffy. It would be fair to say that the guest judges, St. John’s Law alums, are typically impressed when the variety of Catholic Middle Schoolers take the stage in their roles as attorneys, witnesses, defendants and plaintiffs. Sixth through eighth graders from Saints Cyril and Methodius began prepping for this day of Mock Trial activity in January of this year, along with fifth grade students working alongside them as interns in training for

With his boat, docked in Lindenhurst, he is volunteering his spare time to take children with disabilities (along with a parent or guardian) or disabled veterans on fishing, snorkeling and boating trips in the Great South Bay.

All in all, with an early morning wake-up call on a Saturday for the hundreds of students and families who participate, this day is worth every minute of lost Saturday morning sleep and a great debt of gratitude is owed to those who selflessly take the time to coach the students, organize the event and give of their valuable time to invest in the future of these hard-working middle school children from Catholic Schools throughout the island. Two-hundred girls and families from 34 states, Canada and England will be in attendance as Curvy Girls Scoliosis Support hold their second biannual Convention on June 29th- July 1st, on Long Island. Founded in 2006 by then-13 yearold Smithtown, resident Leah Stoltz, Curvy Girls has successfully engaged hundreds of young girls and families in mutual support and advocacy activities through the experience of scoliosis. Scoliosis is the lateral bending and twisting of the spine that, when progressed, causes body deformities and compromises internal organs. It affects seven million people in the U.S. with a diagnosis most commonly occurring in pre-adolescence. The disease shows progression ten times more frequently in girls than boys. Curvy Girls groups provide peer-to-peer and familyto-family support and

Track Invitational Deer Park High School hosted the debut Deer Park Falcons Track Invitational on May 17th on the school’s brand-new track facility, featuring participation by seven girls teams and five boys teams from Suffolk County. Events ranged from
the 100-meter dash and 3,200-meter race to pole vault, high jump, long/triple jump and various throwing competitions. “This was a huge event for both the boys and girls track programs at Deer Park, as it was the first time we hosted a
large invitational,” said Tom Brouillard, boys track and field coach. “Our athletes represented Deer Park with pride, and I know I speak on behalf of girls head coach Jim Petti as well in saying that we are very proud of all our runners. This is an event
TOP COP NIGHT - Our Lady of the Rosary Council N0.4428, Knights of Columbus in Deer Park, held their annual Top Cop Night on May 15th. Traditionally this night is set aside to recognize the good work of a Police Officer from the First Precinct in Suffolk County. This year’s recipient was Police Officer Avital Donnenfeld honored for his self-motivated enforcement which helped keep the residents of Deer Park safer.

SCOUTS ON PARADE - Recently Deer Park Junior Troop 1163 marched in the Memorial Day Parade down Lake Avenue. The girls carried their new banner, wore red, white and blue, and donned funky Americana themed headbands and sunglasses. They also handed out Memorial Day themed pinwheels and flags to little kids on the sides of the parade. They had a ball and earned a fun patch for participating. A big thank you to Madison’s mom and dad for making the new banner! Great job girls!
