In September of 2007, Congress designated the first week in June as National CPR & AED Awareness Week. This year, the week falls from June 1st-7th. The week highlights how lives can be saved when more people know CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) and how to use an AED (Automated External Defibrillator). According to the American Heart Association | American Stroke Association, 70 percent of out-of-hospital cardiac arrests happen in homes and residential settings. Therefore, if you are called on to give CPR in a cardiac emergency, you will most likely be trying to save the life of someone you love. CPR, especially when performed immediately, can double or triple a cardiac arrest victim’s chance of survival. Hands-Only CPR has just two simple steps: If you see a teen or adult suddenly collapse, (1) Call 9-1-1; and (2) Push hard and fast in the center of the chest. During CPR, you should push on the
chest at a rate of at least 100 compressions per minute. To easily keep this rate, push the chest to the beat of the disco song “Stayin’ Alive.” By empowering bystanders to perform Hands-Only CPR, the American Heart Association | American Stroke Association works to strengthen the chain of survival – a five-step process that can mean the difference between life and death for someone experiencing sudden cardiac arrest. The Long Island Game Farm will kick off its summer season beginning on Saturday, May 23rd. At the largest combined Children’s Zoo and Wildlife Park on Long Island, guests can see hundreds of animals and get up close and personal with some of their favorite exotic critters. The Game Farm will be open seven days a week during the summer, allowing families more time to learn about the wildlife and experience the fun. Summer highlights include the return of David Rosaire’s One and Only Pekingese Dog Show, the Leapin’ Lemur Tour, and the all-new Camel Encounter. Guests can experience a personal encounter with the Long Island Game Farm’s very own camels, Sandy and Sahara. During this encounter, guests can feed the camels a healthy snack and take photos with them.
The Animal Education staff will be there to answer any questions and to share interesting facts about these “ships of the desert.” Tickets can be purchased from the souvenir stand for $5. There are only a limited number of tickets available. Tickets will be sold on a first-come, firstserve basis. The Gift of Time By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Time. It’s the one thing we never seem to have quite enough of. There is always a deadline, a constant reminder of what we have yet to accomplish within a given period. From the moment we are born, there is a schedule to follow, a time frame to adhere to, expectations to be met – rarely a moment of peace. From classroom bell schedules and term paper due dates to newspaper and magazine press schedules, my life has pretty much been one giant revolving deadline from kindergarten on
up. And, while generally on time for such things, my reluctance to be a “morning person,” coupled with a (slightly) over-the-top sense of perfectionism, occasionally creates obstacles, self-imposed as they may be. Sometimes, you just need to take a collective deep breath and let things go. Choose your battles wisely; smile and accept the rest. It’s not giving up. It’s not even giving in. It’s simply making a conscious decision to rise above with an eye on the greater goal, whatever that may be. It’s not always easy. And
for those like me who tend to micromanage and overanalyze, it can be nearly impossible to let go and relinquish control of the day-today monotonies which, together, make up the great majority of life. But once you set the wheels in motion, it’s amazing how truly freeing it is. Simply live and let live. We can only control ourselves; not others, not our surroundings. The sooner we realize this and stop trying, the better. At the end of the day, you might even find you have more time to do the things you truly want to. Imagine that.

The Lions Club of Deer Park recently held a fundraiser to benefit the Children’s Diabetes Camp located in Yaphank, Long Island. The Camp is operated by the Cornell University Extension. One thousand golf balls numbered 1 through 1000 were offered for sale at $10per golf ball. The Lions sold 860 Golf Balls, raising $8,600. The event was held on
Monday, May 18th. The balls were dropped from a helicopter approximately 150’ over a temporary golf green/pin on the field of Our Lady of the Rosary Council Knights of Columbus in Deer Park. Golf Ball #181 rested 2” from the Pin, and $4,300 was won by “The Lukenvich Kids,” four teenagers from Long Island that together purchased six golf balls for the charity, and #181 was
one of the six. The other $4,300 was donated to the Children’s camp and, at approximately $250 per child per week, the Deer Park Lions Club helped send 17 kids to camp this summer on Long Island. The Deer Park Lions would like to thank those in the surrounding communities who contributed to this worthwhile charity.

Precocious Poems Rebecca Fox, an eighthgrader at Deer Park’s Robert Frost Middle School, will have two of her poems included in “Bards Annual 2015,” the upcoming edition of the yearly poetry anthology of the Bards Initiative, a nonprofit organization that uses poetry to help the Long Island community. The large paperback book collection, featuring poetry from prominent
poets all across Long Island including Rebecca’s mother, Kathryn Fox, will be launched at the Walt Whitman Birthplace State Historic Site in Huntington Station at the end of June. The only child to be honored with inclusion, Rebecca’s journey began when she accompanied her mother to a reading for breast cancer awareness at Roast Coffee & Tea Trading
Company in Patchogue. After her mother’s reading, Rebecca recited at an open mic and was inspired to write the poems, which her mother submitted to Bards. “We’re incredibly proud of her accomplishment,” said Robert Frost Principal Eliana Levey. “What an amazing feat to be recognized as a poet at such a young age.”

Following their first Holy Communion by offering their devotions to the Blessed Mother seemed a perfect way to honor Mary during this month of Mother’s Day celebrations. Students adorned Mary in a crown of flowers, symbolizing recognition of Mary as queen of heaven and earth. The students took each of their responsibilities very seriously, as they stepped up to read responsorial psalms, bring the gifts of blood and wine or beautify the altar with flowers and the sweetest montage of pictures of each Communicant with their own mothers.

HONORING HEROES - Students from Saints Cyril and Methodius Elementary School marched in Deer Park’s Memorial Day Parade, organized by the Edward K. Peisker Veterans of Foreign War Post No. 5348 in Deer Park. The weather made for a perfect day, filled with memorials of our fallen heroes. Many SSCM students joined, some bearing SSCM’s school banner, some joining other local groups in which they participate - girl scouts, twirlers and more. The school’s own Veteran priest, ex-Marine Father Dennis Suglia, was on hand, marching with the Deer Park Fire Department. Commemorative wreaths were placed by a number of local groups at the JFK monument.

Stepping Out For A Cure The Scleroderma Foundation/Tri-State, Inc. Chapter will hold the 12th Annual Stepping Out To Cure Scleroderma Long Island Walk in Wantagh Park on Sunday, June 7th. Registration and check-in start at 9 a.m. and the walk on the one mile course begins at 10:30 a.m. Join Long Island walk leaders Barbara Geller, Melissa Coppola, Dawn Selg, along with patients, families, and friends for a lively and fun event that raises money for support services and research.The walk helps bring awareness of scleroderma, an autoimmune disease that affects the body’s connective tissue impacting an estimated 30,000 men, women, and children in the Tri-State area – for which there is no known cause and no cure. Food, raffles, and entertainment round out a great day at the park! Participants can register to walk or sponsor a walker online at http://walks. SclerodermaTriState. org before the event. The pre-walk registration fee is $20 for participants 16 years and older, $5 for children ages 5 to 15, and children under five are free. Registration forms and donations can also be mailed to the Tri-State office. Day of event registration is $25 for participants 16 years and older. All registered participants receive a T-shirt, and awards are given to the individual

Moving Upward & Onward Over the past few years, I’ve experienced many wonderful things. These events and facets of my upbringing have helped to shape the man I am today, as well as the man I hope to become. For the past five summers, I’ve been a busboy at a busy restaurant on Fire Island. Now, as I seek to develop my professional career, I am focused on my resume. Sure, being a busboy pays well, but it really isn’t great resume material. I’ve struggled with the idea of moving on in search of something that sounds a little more impressive. My old job is a part of my childhood. It is going to be hard to leave that all behind. I know that we must all move on at some point, but the memories I’ve made keep my tied to that
establishment. I can remember my first days there and feeling the connection with my coworkers. In subsequent summers, these coworkers have come and gone, but the impact they have left on me will live on. I know that they have changed me for the better, and that working as a busboy during high school has instilled in me work ethic and determination. I’m excited to move on and build my career. I know that I am going to be doing big things - and I can thank that little restaurant for putting it all in motion. I am confident that working there was the right choice, even though it didn’t feel like it at times. As I move forward in my life, I hope to never forget where I came from.

Along the banks of the lagoon wreathed with arrowhead, spiker rush, pickerel weed and giant bullrush, I rest with book in hand and ponder my placid environs.

A pair of black birds sporting roseate heads, chalk-like lines on sooty wings and tail, yellow beaks and three large frontal talons, beheld moments ago maneuvering and bouncing in the water, now on land pecking at the grass like chickens. A striking zebra long-wing butterfly propels about sea daisies and flyweed, flowers attracted to its scent. One observes billowy white and grey clouds set on a backdrop of light blue sky. This serene, halcyon atmosphere mingled with refreshing breezes account for the therapeutic elixir, easing the tensions and stresses of the day. All this augments happiness and contentment in life and emphasizes the sentiment that “Life Is Extraordinary.”
