The Deer Park School District’s 2014-2015 budget has passed, with a total of 1,932 ballots cast. Budget voting results are as follows: Yes - 1,372 No - 560 In the board election, incumbents Alfred Centamore and Donna Gulli Grunseich and new member Kristine Rosales were elected to the Board of Education as trustees. Centamore, running unopposed, garnered 1,119 votes. Gulli Grunseich received 943 votes to Jerry JeanPierre’s 866 votes. Rosales garnered 661 votes, topping the 553 votes for Anthony Camodeo. The sale of the Washington School was approved by a vote of 1,241 to 677. Concrete Concrete was invented by the Ancient Romans.

Phineas and Caroline are two talented individuals and I cannot wait to see what the future holds for them.” Mr. Carl Coulanges, a teacher at SJB and the moderator of the SJB Media News Network offered; “the Hendrick Hudson Film Festival was a great experience for the SJB Media News Network. Sibling Scientists Continued From 6 in the fifth grade, while his sister Kayley was the second-place winner for the third grade. Brendan’s project for this year’s fair, Pink-Eye Pad, A Touchy Subject, explored his hypothesis that since an iPad can only be cleaned with a lint-free cloth, it would contain more germs than
a computer keyboard because the latter can be sanitized with a cleaning agent such as bleach. His experiment involved swabbing the surfaces of an iPad and computer keyboard for germs before and after cleaning, then growing bacteria from these swabs in petri dishes. His results showed that while the computer keyboard was
germ-free after being cleaned, the iPad had hardly any bacteria on it at all, even before it was cleaned. The idea for this project came to the fifth-grader (and overall winner of last year’s BNL science fair) after he was diagnosed with a bad case of conjunctivitis and not allowed to use his family’s iPad during that time for fear that

Still Missing The Meaning By: Jamie Lynn Ryan With the recent passing of Memorial Day, I thought it appropriate to resurrect an old column from 2006, as the sentiment remains the same no matter the year… I am willing to bet that there are many children who were probably raised to think the sole purpose of Memorial Day is strictly to roll out the barbecues, open the pool for the season, head to the beach for the first time and check out all those great sales. Pretty sad, when you think about it. Such a holiday is surely not a “happy” occasion in the traditional sense; although,
for most people, all that matters is that it qualifies as a paid day off. And there we are, off and running, blissfully unaware and increasingly unpatriotic as a result. When did this sense of apathy set it? Is it just a manifestation of the more recent generations, or is it representative of our country as a whole? Now, I’m certain there are many to whom this sentiment does not apply. Any veterans, or the family and friends of those who have served, are generally quite appreciative of such a day’s significance. I, for one, admit that I had never attended any kind of Memorial Day commemoration prior to this year when my family
decided to take a ride out to Calverton for the cemetery’s annual services. Sure, it was solemn, but you know what? So is the fact that hundreds of thousands of people have lost their lives over the course of the last several centuries in wars at home and abroad. Is it really asking too much to observe a day – a portion of a day, even – to appreciate that sacrifice? So, the next time some overly-commercialized holiday comes along, take a moment to reflect upon the reason why it was made a national holiday in the first place. I doubt it was to give people another excuse to have a barbecue.
