(LICADD) is pleased to announce that its 27th Annual Angel Ball Celebrating Hope Springs Eternal, held on Monday, May 12th, at the Garden City Hotel, raised over $250,000 to support LICADD’s alcohol and drug prevention and intervention programs for children and families. Marking The Milestones I’m not sure when it first occurred to me, but at some point over the course of the last few weeks, I came to the somewhat startling realization that it has been 10 full years since I graduated from college. A whole decade. Wow. I’m not sure why this came as such a shock. After all, the math clearly adds up. And I did attend my high school’s 10-year reunion a full 4 years ago. But still, it seemed that there would be a bit more of a cushion until the next milestone. I suppose time flies while you’re busy
working to make ends meet and your life is not dictated by a bell schedule. Although, come to think of it, there were no bells to signal the beginning or ending of class in college, which was nice in its own way. It was that subtle transition from the structure of high school to the faux freedom of “the real world,” where you were able to choose a path well suited to your future pursuits and, well, pursue it. In March of 2013, the Manorville resident was diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma, a primary bone cancer that affects mainly children and adolescents. Generous Donation Cohen Children’s Medical Center of New York, part of the North Shore-LIJ Health System, is proud to be awarded a grant of $267,839 on behalf of Kohl’s Department Stores, through the Kohl’s Caresâ cause merchandise program. Funds awarded support Cohen’s Kohl’s Cares Keeping Kids Healthy Program, which combats the childhood obesity epidemic through fitness and nutritional education, as a means to prevent excessive weight gain in childhood. John Nicolette, owners of Monster Mini-Golf in Deer Park, graciously donated the use of their facility for the celebration. The children enjoyed minigolf, video games, a book reading, pizza and snacks while their parents were able to spend time with
other military families. Legislator Stern introduced legislation recognizing the “Month of the Military Child” to honor the sacrifices made not only by the brave men and women serving our great nation, but by their families, as well.

Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory joined The Witness Project of Long Island Saturday for their 11th Annual 5-Mile Walk from Wyandanch to Babylon Town Hall to raise breast cancer awareness. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 1 in 8 women in the United States will develop breast cancer over a lifetime. The Witness Project is a community-based program sponsored by the National Institute of Health designed to ‘increase awareness, knowledge, and motivation, thereby increasing screening and early-detection behaviors among African American women and ultimately reducing mortality and morbidity from breast and cervical cancer among underserved African American women.’ “I am proud to support the dedicated members of The Witness Project in the fight against breast cancer,” said Presiding Officer Gregory. “Their
