Over three days, the younger boys benefited from position-specific training and the experience levels of the older boys, while the older boys benefited from earning some money for their program. After bringing in old T-shirts from home, the students cut strips into the shirts and tied the strips into knots, creating colorful, stretchable carryall bags that can be
used again and again. “The bags were fun to make, and it was great to do something to help the earth,” said student Aubrey Pottinger.

Well, barring any unforeseen circumstances (fingers and flippers crossed), tomorrow will mark Buddy the Betta’s much anticipated 3-month birthday with me. Why such a big fuss for such a tiny milestone? I think it’s fair to say that any landmarks achieved while residing in a fishbowl should be celebrated, don’t you? Other than his uncanny fascination with the ornamental plant he resides beside (well, in, really), he seems perfectly content to swim laps around his bowl, only pausing long enough to inhale a few flakes, chew, and move on. They say that fish do truly come to know their owners over time, and I firmly believe this to be so. The moment I walk into the room, I
don’t even need to flip the light switch before I see my little Buddy, face pressed against the glass, anxiously awaiting my return. Who needs a puppy with a greeting like that, right? Of course, it would be nice to interact on a bit more of a personal level. With this in mind, I decided to briefly dip the tip of my finger into the bowl one night just to see what he would do. Well, let’s just say that anything moving near the surface is assumed to be edible. No sooner had my finger hit the water, then Buddy came zooming over, anxiously pecking. Curious, I decided to do a little research to see A.) if Bettas have actual teeth (they do); B.) if they can harm humans with aforementioned teeth (not so
much); and C.) if I was creating an unsanitary environment by welcoming these tiny Betta “kisses” to my finger. Apparently, as long as you thoroughly wash your hands and don’t immerse your entire hand in the bowl, you can even gently pet your Betta on the back. How sweet! I went on to read that, in most cases, these extremely intelligent fish can even be trained to perform simple tricks, such as “jumping” to get their food, spreading their fins in front of a mirror, and responding to feeding time by waiting in a set spot for the prized flakes. Well, we’ve definitely mastered that last one. On to the rest of the circus tricks! Happy Birthday Buddy. Here’s to many more…

Registration for the Golf Classic begins at 9 a.m. followed by an 11 a.m. shotgun start. Foursomes will be treated to a barbecue lunch out on the course followed by a cocktail reception and buffet dinner from 5:308 pm. Dessert and a raffle drawing is at 7 pm. The golf entry fee is $600 per person or $2,200 per foursome. Tickets for the cocktail/dinner reception only are $150 per person. Sponsorship opportunities also are available. Mather Memorial Hospital’s 30th Annual Golf Classic will take place at the Port Jefferson Country Club at Harbor Hills on Monday, June 1st, with proceeds benefitting Nursing Education programs at the Hospital. HELPING EACH OTHER - Recently, the Deer Park Varsity Lacrosse team hosted a fundraising clinic for younger Deer Park PAL Lacrosse players. The boys met for three days - the younger boys benefited from position specific training and the experience levels of the older boys, while the older boys benefited from earning some money for their program. Coaches McLoughlin and Franco were on hand to organize, assist and oversee the training. It was a great event, and everyone got something out of it!

I’m home for the summer. My first year of college has come and gone. I’ve made lots of friends, and memories. Now, as I’m home for the next four months, I’ve begun to realize that I’m actually almost an adult. Although I’ve had a summer job for years, I am now feeling the pressure to work harder than ever. I understand the importance of developing work ethic at a young age. We are supposed to learn that hard work is the best way to achieve anything in life. We work hard in school, during extracurriculars and throughout the summer. Although the pressure to work hard is rooted in many aspects of a child’s life, the summer job is considered to be the defining line between childhood and adolescence. I feel as though these
summer jobs take away from the sanctity of childhood. Even though I can’t imagine a summer without some form of employment, it would be nice. Regardless, I believe that youth should not be expected to work long hours during the summer. You have to leave some room for being a kid. I remember my first day of work. I was fresh out of middle school. My boss wanted me to know that he would only expect me to work three days a week, because childhood only lasts for so long. Instead of bussing tables or mowing lawns, kids should be focused on being kids. Childhood is without a doubt the best part of life. There is no point in wasting it working. After all, you have the rest of your life to work!

James Brennan, a Marine Corps colonel deployed in Afghanistan since the holidays, had been receiving letters and crafts from his devoted daughter, Caroline, a fourth-grader at Deer Park’s John F. Kennedy Intermediate School. A day after he arrived
home from overseas, Col. Brennan treated his daughter to a special May 7th visit to her special education class, where he read her chosen book, Jonathan London’s “Froggy Plays in the Band,” to the students. He was accompanied by his wife, Laura.

Welcome Home Caroline, 9, in turn then read her father a card that she had made for him, before teacher Heather Ciurleo and the class presented him with a patriotic dessert. “I’m thrilled to be here,” said the 20-year veteran about the heartwarming reunion.
BROWNIE NIGHT - Recently, Junior Troop 1163 hosted Brownie Night for 65 Deer Park Brownies. The girls who attended earned the Senses and Snacks Badges by completing activities at ten stations. The girls took home the two Badges and a fun patch for participating, along with a Little Debbie Brownie. Thank you to all who participated, including the 25 Junior level girls and all of the Girl Scout Leaders for their help, especially Christine Giffone, Linda Caracci, Cathy Cairo and Jenni Gulinello. The night was a huge success with a great time had by all!

Holocaust Lesson to future generations, remembering the horrors of the Holocaust and remaining vigilant in identifying abuse or racism so that such atrocities will never happen again. After answering students’ questions and signing copies of his book “Bondi’s Brother,” Roth took his visitors to the museum, where he explained various works of art created by students as well as photos and artifacts that survived World War II. “This trip is always a
highlight for our high school students, as they realize that future generations will not have the unique experience of meeting a Holocaust survivor in person,” said Osbern. “They appreciate having the opportunity to hear Mr. Roth’s firsthand account of the Nazi’s systematic oppression throughout his childhood, leading up to his own imprisonment and liberation.”

Deer Park High School 10th-graders in the global history classes of Sue Ortega, Laurie Osbern, Maureen Vecchia and Jeff Willemin recently visited the Holocaust Resource Center in Manhasset, meeting with the center’s director, Irving Roth. A Holocaust survivor of Auschwitz and Buchenwald, Roth has dedicated his life to Holocaust education and shared his personal story with the sophomores. He asked them to pass it on
