Written In The Stars By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I’ve never been one for astrology, but I recently came upon a site that analyzed such philosophies based upon the date, exact time and location of your birth, providing a detailed account of every personality trait imaginable. I have to admit, I was prepared to be skeptical of the results – until I read them. So many characteristics were, shall we say, scarily accurate. The analysis was so in depth that even the most cynical person might take pause. From pinpointing my shy, somewhat introverted
nature to delving into my tendencies toward “bitter sarcasm,” it covered all aspects quite thoroughly. I was impressed, to say the least. So what conclusion should be drawn from these seemingly abstract signs and symbols? Are our personality traits pre-determined, based upon some random arrangement of the sun, moon and planets, or are we continuously shaped by the environments in which we are respectively raised? It is an interesting concept to consider, especially taking into account the unexpected accuracy of this “reading.”

PASTA DINNER - The 8th New York District of the Knights of Columbus consisting of Our Lady of the Rosary in Deer Park, Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal in Wyandanch, Our Lady of Grace in West Babylon, and St. Joseph the Carpenter in Babylon recently ran the Life Center Pasta Dinner. The Dinner was held at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Council in Lindenhurst on April 6th. Bishop Brennan was the Guest Speaker. Thousands of dollars were raised to help the Life Center of Long Island in protecting the unborn.

Cross business plan competition. “To determine the winner of the award, the American Red Cross on Long Island analyzed volunteers and what they did,” said Theodore Smirlis, adviser for Deer Park’s Red Cross chapter. “The volunteer who contributed the most time and came up with new projects was the winner, and that was Danial.”

Each year, Child Abuse Prevention Services (CAPS), Long Island’s leading non-profit dedicated to the prevention of bullying, child abuse and neglect among schoolage children, recognizes a local individual who has demonstrated a commitment to improving the lives of children. This year, the CAPS John Davis Memorial Award will be given to Nancy Greulich (Plainview) and Susan Silverman (Manhasset Hills), both long-time CAPS supporters, volunteers and past presidents of the CAPS Board of Directors. The presentation will be made at the CAPS 16th Annual Golf Outing, Monday, June 9th, at The Mill River Club, Oyster Bay, and will support the work of the agency’s Bully Prevention Center. Emily Civitella, a 13 year old Deer Park resident recently was named “Miss Teen BravO!” at the BravO! National Dance & Talent Competition held at East Islip High School March 28th – 30th, 2014 as well as “Miss Teen Turn It Up” at the Turn It Up Dance Challenge, held in Kenilworth, NJ April 26th – 27th. Emily won these prestigious honors for her solo, “Sassy” which received a Platinum level awards from the competition judges, the highest level possible at these competitions.
Emily performed at these competitions representing Dance Connection (Islip, NY) along with her fellow Competition Team Members, who ended their competition season with 43 Platinum/Elite, 19 Elite High Gold/High Gold Level awards as well as numerous judges’ choice awards with 23 top 10 placements in their respective divisions and a Class Act Sportsmanship Award. Emily has collected a medal, sash, trophy and tiaras for her accomplishments and afterward expressed her happiness with her achievements: “I was really very excited and surprised when I won because there were so many good dancers in my category. I love the character I get to play in Sassy, and how challenging the choreography is.”, Emily Civitella. Miss Emily (as she is known to the students

Susan Silverman has been an active CAPS volunteer and contributor for 14 years. Since 2006,
when she joined the Board of Directors, Susan has assumed leadership roles on the executive committee as President and Administrative Vice President. Susan’s dedication to the well-being of children is exemplified by her deep commitment to volunteerism, advocacy and keeping children safe. The Roslyn-based Child Abuse Prevention Services was founded in 1982. The CAPS Bully Prevention Center, opened in 2012, is the first of its kind to offer parents the direct support and resources they need to resolve bullying and cyber-bullying incidents involving their schoolage child. The Art League of Long Island’s Art In The Park Fine Art & Craft Fair returns to the scenic Heckscher Park in Huntington on Saturday May 31st and Sunday June 1st. Now in its 47th year, this juried fair attracts thousands of discerning art lovers from the metropolitan area. More than 70 artists and craftspeople will show and sell original works of art and handmade crafts such as paintings, photographs, ceramics, jewelry, sculpture, woodwork, glasswork, wearable art, and more. Prizes will be awarded to artists and craftspeople for superior artistry and craftsmanship.
The event will also feature live art demonstrations by Art League instructors, family-friendly hands-on activities, and live music throughout both days. A variety of delicious treats prepared by on-site food vendors round out the experience. A raffle will run throughout the weekend, winner to be announced Sunday afternoon. Proceeds will benefit the Art League of Long Island, a notfor-profit organization serving the community since 1955. This rain or shine event will be open to the public 10 a.m. and close at 5 p.m. both days. Admission is free for the entire family.

SCOUT CLEANUP - Girls from Deer Park Girl Scout Troop 1163 recently met Town of Babylon workers at Santapogue Creek in West Babylon to remove litter from the creek shore line. The girls helped remove three recycling bins of bottles and cans and bags of litter from the brush around the creek. The girls climbed into the brush, pulling out wrappers, cups, lids and plastic bags. Their work helped them earn the Animal Habitats Badge and a Fun Patch for an environmental clean up.
