Suffolk County United Veterans received another visit to the John J. Lynch Vets Place shelter from the Long Island Cares Veterans Project Mobile Outreach Unit, loaded with 652 pounds of fresh produce and 181 pounds plus of personal care and paper product items. The donation was for Veterans and their family members in need which helped to provide over 541 meals, and which supplements items available at the Food Pantry,

The Dix Hills Fire Department will open its doors to area residents, so they can learn about what it takes to be a volunteer firefighter or EMT in our community as part of the 4th Annual RecruitNY Statewide Initiative. Over the last several years, it has been very difficult for fire departments throughout New York State to recruit and retain volunteers for a variety of reasons. Like most volunteer fire departments, the Dix Hills Fire Department needs to bolster its emergency responder membership so it can continue to provide the optimum level of protection for our
community. As part of RecruitNY, on Sunday, April 27th, between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. the Dix Hills Fire Department located at 115 E. Deer Park Road in Dix Hills, will join volunteer fire departments all across the state at their respective firehouses for a unified recruitment drive. Not only will the Recruitment Fair be an opportunity to highlight the duties and rewards that come with being a volunteer firefighter or EMT, it will also raise public awareness about the need for volunteers. Musings By: Jamie Lynn Ryan There are moments that stand out in your mind as if they happened yesterday, so crystal clear do they remain years later. Walking around C.W. Post’s campus several weeks ago, I was reminded of the many afternoons spent sitting out on the lawn with my Philosophy class, reading Leaves Of Grass by Walt Whitman. The lush foliage, the warmth of the sun, the cool spring breeze, the words of Long Island’s very own Whitman… those are images that never fade. There were the countless afternoons spent walking the “Chipmunk Trail,”
through the Arboretum, savoring the peace and tranquility between classes, hoping to spy some sort of wildlife frolicking between the academic buildings – perhaps a black squirrel rooting through someone’s discarded lunch bag, a sight that was spied on numerous occasions. Then there were the many days relaxing in the Honors Lounge, reading, snacking, socializing and, most importantly, forging friendships that are still going strong, ten years later. Oh, and the classes, of course. Can’t forget those. All kidding aside, there were many classes over the course of my four years at Post
that left an indelible mark. I credit my photography class for introducing me to a whole new outlet for artistic expression, back in the days when digital cameras were still fairly new and handdeveloping our own black and white prints in the darkroom had yet to become obsolete. Years later, I treasure that portfolio of work. What better scenery to photograph than the vast expanse of the north shore, what better setting to begin to explore adulthood, and Whitman… and what better place to revisit, all these years later, to see if the memories remain as vibrant today. That they do.

Clad in togas and armor, thespians at the Deer Park school mined Craig Sodaro’s A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Colosseum, set in 30 B.C., for every ounce of humor during two recent performances in the school’s cafeteria. The large ensemble cast featured Mike Colombo as the farmer-turnedgladiator Simplcus, Sanjay Singh as Emperor Caesar Obamus, Lynne Gbadamosi as Divinia, Ray Ugalde as Publicus Piscius, Danielle Tirado as Drusilla, Tristan Tirado as General Spurius Sillius, Erica Clinton as Dominatia Violencia and Roger Singh as Terribulus. The dedicated stage crew included 10 sixth-graders, 18 seventh-graders and 17 eighth-graders.

Walking For Karen The Walk/Run For Friends of Karen at The Long Island Marathon is an opportunity to help children diagnosed with cancer or another lifethreatening illness. The 5K Walk/Run will take place on Saturday,

For Ryan Hughes, a kindergartner at Deer Park’s John Quincy Adams Primary School, the best surprise of all came at the end of a recent school day. The unannounced guest arriving at teacher Allison Jurman’s classroom to pick him up from school was his father Michael, a staff sergeant newly home from serving with the U.S. Army overseas. “He’s been gone since the summer, nine whole
months, so this is a wonderful day,” said elated mother Theresa Hughes, who accompanied him to the classroom. “I’m very happy,” said Michael Hughes. “It’s good to finally be home.” This was the fourth deployment for the father of three, who works as a financial planner when not serving his country. While an emotional Ryan held tightly to his father, who was still clad in fatigues,
