Help Stamp Out Hunger From Alaska to Florida, and from Maine to Hawaii, on Saturday, May 9th, U.S. Postal Service letter carriers across the country will visit homes and businesses in every city, suburb and town in America to collect food for what is the nation’s largest food drive. “This is it. The day to make a difference. If ever you’ve thought about helping your community, the time is now. Be a part of something big,” asserts Randi Shubin Dresner, President & CEO, Island Harvest. Island Harvest, Long Island’s largest hunger relief organization, feeding and supporting 316,000 Long Islanders annually, is proud to announce that it has been chosen by the National Association of Letter Carriers and the U.S. Postal Service to be the Long Island region’s sole recipient of its “Stamp Out Hunger” Food Drive taking place on Long Island, and nationally, on Saturday May 9th. Here’s how it works. Long Islanders are being asked to set out non-perishable food by their mailboxes on May 9th, which will then be picked up by their letter

carriers while delivering the day’s mail. The letter carriers will then deliver their collected food to an Island Harvest “Stamp Out Hunger” warehouse – where an army of volunteers will sort food, to be distributed immediately to Island Harvest’s network of 570 member agencies, including food pantries and soup kitchens throughout Long Island. “While the letter carriers do all of the day’s heavy lifting, Stamp Out Hunger makes donating easy. All people have to do is leave their donation by their mailbox,” asserts Randi Shubin Dresner, President & CEO, Island Harvest. “Our goal is for every family to donate something, and let their letter carriers do the rest. It’s that simple.” “The harsh winter weather this year presented Long Islanders experiencing hunger with many challenges, including pay loss due to the weather, making it an even more difficult time to put food on the table,” explained Dresner. “This, coupled with the usual springtime need for food following the

depletion of our holiday donations, makes this year’s Stamp Out Hunger food drive essential.” Since the inception of Stamp Out Hunger in 1992, over 1.3 billion pounds of food have been collected by letter carriers in the United States. Locally, last year Long Islanders donated more than 326,000 pounds of food and this year, Island Harvest expects a similar amount to be collected by letter carriers on 2,219 carrier routes across Long Island. “The most trusted federal employees, U.S. Postal Service letter carriers are routinely involved in many community outreach initiatives, and often, form very close relationships with their customers,” said Walter Barton, President, NALC. “It is this connection they have within their communities that compels them to want to help make a difference.” Stamp Out Hunger is the nation’s largest food drive that has been taking place now for 23 years. “Stop and Shop is pleased to be a Grand Sponsor of Stamp Out Hunger and support this important

Right At Home There’s officially two weeks of my first year of college left. It’s amazing to think that orientation was so long ago. I’m shocked that this year has gone by so fast. One quarter of my college experience is almost over. It’s a bittersweet realization. Throughout this past school year, I’ve made a lot of great friends. I’ve had my doubts about Villanova being my home, but I can’t think of any place where I feel more comfortable. At Villanova, I’ve been exposed to new ideas. I’ve had the opportunity to try new things. I’m a rugby player now. I’m also on the Executive Board of Student Council. I’ve done many great things in my time here, but I like to think the moments that aren’t spent on an activity are the most valuable. Between classes, after club meetings, during water breaks at practice; these are the times during which memories are formed.

Throughout my year here, I’ve realized the value of stopping to smell the roses. When I’m old and looking back on my life, I don’t want to regret my decisions. I hope that I can make my future self happy through the choices that I make today. I can only wish for a future where I am satisfied with my existence. It all starts here. College. The institution which sets the foundation for everyone’s adult life. I’m struggling with choices today which really won’t matter in the long run. I want to minor in marine biology. I realize that it isn’t an option at my current school. I could transfer, but I’m not thrilled with that option. Villanova is a place where I feel at home. Even if they don’t have the option to minor in marine biology, Villanova has already afforded me so much. I can only say nice things about the college where I have made some of my most recent memories.

The Week That Was By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Let’s try something different for a change. Instead of waiting until the eleventh hour to compose my thoughts for the week, I’ve decided to jot down a bit each day, with hopes that these random ramblings will gel into a somewhat coherent theme. Sounds just abstract enough to work. Monday… The weekly “fresh start” we all seek, yet are often disappointed by about 10 minutes into. For me, the perfect opportunity to catch up on the avalanche of e-mails that have surely accumulated over the weekend, while methodically trying to plan the remainder of the week’s activities. A quick scan of social media says everyone is still buzzing about last night’s

highly anticipated season premiere of Game of Thrones. Me, I’m still working my way through the series of five larger-than-life books. Tuesday… Into the fray again, trying to keep pace with the workflow in preparation for my day off on Friday, yet another reason to get a jump on that column. Nothing but rain and clouds outside, which makes for a decidedly dreary disposition. But, I suppose such an atmosphere is far more conducive to accomplishing tasks on the endless To Do list. Better not to be tempted by the sun’s rays, beckoning you to take an extended lunch. Wednesday… Yet another lovely day in the neighborhood, or so I briefly glimpsed on my way into the office. Word is it’s 66º and sunny. One of these days, this

kind of weather will coincide with a weekend. Maybe. But alas, here I sit at my keyboard, typing away at the local community news and events. Summer fun in the sun can’t come soon enough. Thursday… The eleventh hour. One day short of a deadline; for me, tomorrow will be spent helping to run the Society of Professional Journalists’ Annual Region I Conference, this year hosted by Hofstra University and sponsored by our very own Press Club of Long Island. A full schedule of panels and lectures by some of the region’s finest journalists is on tap, a muchneeded reminder of why it was I became involved in this field to begin with. And so, I’m off. Stay tuned for a full recap of the conference next week!

The 8th New York District Knights of Columbus in Suffolk County recently held their 17th Annual Pasta Dinner to support the Life Center of Long Island. This year’s event was held at Our Lady of Grace Parish in West Babylon on Sunday, April

12th, 2015. The four councils in the District worked all day with the staff of the Life Center to serve over 300 guests for a great pasta dinner and impressive Chinese Auction with beautiful gift baskets and prizes. Working together, the

Knights of Columbus and the Life Center raised over $20,000 to help protect the unborn in our area. The guest speaker of the event was Father Stephen H. Donnelly of St. Patrick’s Parish in Huntington.

Taking To The Track Deer Park High School hosted its second annual Deer Park Falcons Track Invitational on April 7th, increasing participation in the event to 20 Suffolk County teams competing in 20 different events. The winning teams were Amityville High School for boys and Bay Shore High School for girls. Several Deer Park athletes won their respective events or earned

runner-up status. In notable boys performances, senior Nkosi Burgess won the 400-meter race with a time of 53.75, senior and team captain Joe Ranni was runner-up in the 1,600-meter race and the boys 4x400 relay team finished first. On the girls team, Taylah Lovett and Alexandria Maniscalco finished in the top 10 for the 400-meter race and 100-meter high hurdles,

respectively, and the girls 4x100 meter relay came in third. “Deer Park’s athletes represented our program and community with great pride,” said Tom Brouillard, boys track and field coach. “On behalf of our director of athletics, Dominick Fontana, and girls head coach Jim Petti, I would like to congratulate our runners on a job well done.”

Reuse. Recycle! Students in higher grades have been talking about the earth’s ecosystems and ways to best protect our ozone, so that this important component of the earth’s atmosphere can continue protecting us from harmful ultraviolet sunlight (UV-B). Second graders took on the dangers that humans can inflict on the seas. They discussed how something as simple as a plastic bag littering the ocean can prove fatal to sea turtles, if one of them were to accidentally ingest one, mistaking it for a jellyfish. A little creative use of coffee filters and washable markers along with a few

On May 23rd, the Long Island Ducks will welcome the United States Power Squadrons District 3 to Bethpage Ballpark in Central Islip. The United States Power Squadrons is the largest and oldest non-profit organization dedicated teaching boating skills and safety. District 3 is made up of local squadrons that cover geographic Long Island with members in Brooklyn, Queens, Nassau and Suffolk. Squadron members, led by District Commander Ann Peltier of Patchogue,

will enjoy pregame festivities, the ballgame itself between the Long Island Ducks and the Camden Riversharks, the singing of God Bless America during the seventh inning stretch, led by squadron member Douglas Durfee, and a post game fireworks show. A genuine camaraderie among employees, morale-boosting and team building are some of the terms heard from representatives of several companies who have joined the annual Walk-Run for Friends of Karen at the Long Island Marathon. This year’s events, 5K Walk-Run on Saturday, May 2nd, at Mitchel Athletic Complex in Uniondale, and 10K, half and full marathons scheduled for Sunday, May 3rd, at Eisenhower Park in East Meadow, will again be filled with the enthusiasm of hundreds of Friends of Karen supporters – among the thousands of Marathon participants – being able to help families who turn to the tri-state organization for assistance when a child is diagnosed with cancer or another life-threatening illness. Mary Bhullar, President of Worldnet International, an express courier service headquartered in Springfield Gardens, learned about Friends of Karen when one of her employees saw hundreds of people wearing the team shirts out on the

course of the Long Island Marathon in 2011. Together they decided to motivate employees to sign up to help raise funds and awareness for Friends of Karen and for the past three years many of their employees trained together to do the 10K event. “Each year, post-event, there was not only a sense of accomplishment in helping the families of Friends of Karen but a significant positive shift in how our staff were relating to one another.” This year, soon after the employees starting mapping out their training course, one of them shared that a colleague had a child diagnosed with cancer and sent them directly to Friends of Karen for assistance. “We witnessed first-hand how they respond so earnestly to families in need,” said Ms. Bhullar. Funds raised from the Walk-Run will directly benefit families who are assisted by Friends of Karen’s Family Support program which helps with household bills, health insurance, medical co-

payments prescriptions, hospital lodging costs, transportation to and from medical treatments and so much more. Since 1978, Friends of Karen has been providing emotional, financial and advocacy support for children with a life-threatening illness and their families in order to keep them stable, functioning and able to cope.
