A total of 36 Deer Park High School students in the DECA club competed in the DECA State Career Conference in upstate Rochester from March 8th-11th, the highest number of participants in this event in the school’s history. Battling against 2,000 of the state’s best business students, four Deer Park representatives – Peter Demopoulos, Nick DiModica, Joe Sanchez and John Santare – earned trophies and a chance to compete at the International Career Development Conference in Nashville, Tennessee at the end of April. The team of Demopoulos and Sanchez won a first-place trophy in the marketing communications category, while DECA cocaptains DiModica and Santare came in fifth in financial services. Also finishing in the top 10 of various categories at the conference were Ashley Ahmad, Jack Borah, Ryan Byrne, Kevin Chang, Nick Gallo, Kayla Griffin, Tajriana Haque, Glenn Hope, Joewin James, Kristina Kozakevitch, Lauren Lazarte, Stephen Lew, Michael Mieses, Malique Papailler, Sarah Qasir, Martin Salgado, Dan Sebok, Andrew Siford, Bianca Taipe, Joe Thomas and Vincent Verdile. “What can I say, it was just another outstanding display from Deer Park’s DECA members,” said business teacher and DECA adviser Gregory Menig. “To have 70 percent of our attendees earn a medal or trophy for their performance was just tremendous. As for our national qualifiers, I’m thrilled that John and Nick’s hard work finally paid off with a trip to nationals in their senior year. The continued success of Pete and Joe, earning first place in the state and a

Random Rambles By: Jamie Lynn Ryan It’s been a rough year. Less than four months in and, well, I know many people who are already looking for a do-over. Sure, every period of time has its ups and downs, highs and lows. But honestly, since the moment the ball dropped in Times Square this past New Year’s Eve, it seems that everything began falling right along with it. At least it’s Spring. There is something uplifting about sunshine-filled afternoons and ﬂower blossoms that does bring a smile to the face, however ﬂeeting it may be. And of course, those sunworshippers among us have to be looking forward to

summer and beach outings and barbeques. But until then… It’s April. April 15th, to be exact, as I write these words. Tax Day (although, technically speaking, we were graced with a few extra days tacked on to the filing deadline this year). The Easter Bunny has come and gone. Baseball diamonds are abuzz with activity. Pretty soon, school will be out of session and the parks and pools will be ﬂooded with families having fun. And so it goes. From dawn until dusk, one season into the next, day after day, week after week, month after month; until, before you know it, a decade has passed in the blink of an eye. In just a couple of

weeks, I will be celebrating my 11th year as editor and columnist at this very paper. How much has changed in that span of time… The best thing we can do – the only thing, really – is to embrace each day, with all its nuances, and appreciate whatever it may bring into our respective lives. The list of things beyond our control is endless; the key to happiness lies in how we react to them, what we learn from them, and how we use them to better ourselves as individuals. I’m no philosopher, but that much I’ve picked up in my 33 years roaming this planet. Here’s wishing everyone a brighter tomorrow… and the day after… and the day after…

The hope is that these scholarships will help foster the continuation of their musical development. This year, as they celebrate their 90th year, they are proud to say that on Sunday, April 24th, they will be presenting their 66th annual Scholarship Benefit Concert. The performers for the concert will be this year’s winners. They will join a list of almost 200 other winners from the past 65 years. Following the performance, they will receive their scholarship awards.

The Ugly Truth The Deer Park Community Association and Suffolk County Police Department will jointly present “The Ugly Truth” presentation on the dangers of heroin and prescription drug abuse. The event, which will discuss how to recognize drug abuse among teenagers and what actions parents should take, will be held at Deer Park High School’s auditorium on Tuesday, May 3rd, at 7 p.m. Guest speakers will

Display of Talent After arduous rehearsals stretching back to January, Deer Park High School student actors and director James Henry brought the musical “The Wiz” to life in three vibrant performances on March 17th, 18th and 19th. “The Wiz,” a beloved Broadway gem telling the timeless tale of Dorothy’s adventures through the Land of Oz, infuses L. Frank Baum’s “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” with a dazzling mix of rock, gospel and soul music. Written by Charlie Smalls and William F. Brown, the 1975 Broadway production won

They are currently learning all about about Spring animals. They have learned the vocabulary for the animals through movement and song. They learned “pajaritos a bailar” which is the chicken dance. In the song they learn verbs to describe the birds everyday movements. Each lesson is also accompanied by a craft. The children are always excited to perform the songs!
