The West II Festival Band, conducted by James W. Dragovich of George W. Hewlett High School, rehearsed Carl Strommen’s Grand Tetons Overture, Robert W. Smith’s The Great Locomotive Chase, and Warren Barker’s An Irish Ayre for Winds and A Galop To End All Galops. Conducted by Mark Kimes of Hauppauge High School, the West II Festival Chorus tackled Mozart’s Dies Irae, Brian Lewis’ Exsultate, Jubilate, Linda Spevacek’s Kimineero
(The Carrion Crow), the traditional spiritual Didn’t My Lord Deliver Daniel and pan-African anthem Nkosi Sikelel’ iAfrika. The West II Festival Orchestra, conducted by Anthony J. Pianelli Jr. of Paul D. Schreiber High School in Port Washington, practiced a selection of material including Shirl Jae Atwell’s Drifen, Bela Bartok’s Romanian Folk Dances, Percy Fletcher’s Folk Tune and Fiddle Dance, and selections from the musical Les Miserables.

Turning Points By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Discovering The Passion To Do What You Love… That was the topic I chose to speak on at the recent C.W. Post Honors Program Conference. The good news? Every last student in attendance at the standing room only panel had something they were passionate about and, in an ideal world, wished to pursue as a career. The bad news? Most they seemed all too content to relegate these passions to a mere hobby, rather than even giving the dreams a fleeting chance to exist in their own, real world. Musicians majoring in Chemistry, Artists majoring in Finance… This is not to say that all fields don’t hold some sort of fulfilling promise – but
just choosing a major for the sake of picking something, anything… well, I can’t say I support that philosophy wholeheartedly. And as for the money factor; well that only goes so far in dictating happiness. Say what you will about being able to purchase all the comforts and extravagances you like, but if you spend the majority of your life just going through the motions of a 9-5 job, I think it’s safe to assume no amount of compensation will make up for it. I’m not sure I made much of an impression on these students, as many are already well on their way to graduation and seem fairly set to continue on their chosen path. Others were a bit more open-minded, willing to put themselves out there and
explore – at least in the short term – for even the slightest chance at success in something they truly enjoyed. Planting flowers is another eco-friendly way to garden. Native flowers, in particular, can help maintain an area’s natural ecosystem, providing food and shelter for insects and other wildlife. McDonald is still an active member of the NYPD and will soon be celebrating 30 years in service. He starts out by ensuring that each student attending hears about the beauty and the gift that is New York City’s Central Park. At nearly 800 acres large and boasting playgrounds, zoos, water, and boats, a castle and so much more, Detective McDonald wants the students of Saints Cyril and Methodius to understand that he’s not there to scare them away from visiting NYC, and he gives kudos to the early city planners and their decision to reserve this place of sanctity and wonder in the midst of the growing metropolis. See, the thing is, Detective McDonald holds no rancor for either the city he loves so dearly or for the teenage boy who delivered the three lifechanging gunshots nearly 30 years ago. On the contrary, Detective McDonald’s annual Lenten mission is to visit with schools to share

“Right then and there, I knew I was dying,” he says. He went on to say that he remembered thinking, “Please, God, I don’t want to die.” Girls and boys alike in the SSCM student body subtly wipe quiet tears from their faces, and as Detective McDonald pauses in his story-telling, only the sound of the respirator on his wheelchair fills the auditorium. He artfully

He’s thankful and says “Good, because once that priest came to my bedside, it changed everything for me.” Over time and after many surgeries and the birth of their baby boy, McDonald and his wife came to a place in their shared healing process when the most important
season and heading for World Series greatness. As he begins speaking about this day, some of the students shift nervously in their seats. Detective McDonald speaks in a gentle, quiet tone, with his tracheotomy tube rendering his voice little more than a whisper. But what he has to say is worth leaning in for a listen. He tells them of a spree of bicycle thefts at the time and how he and his partner approached three teenage boys in the park who fit the description of suspects in some of these thefts. The boys took off running in opposite directions and McDonald and his partner split up to chase them down. Once McDonald caught up with them and identified himself as a cop, he bent down to investigate what looked like a gun tucked into one of the boy’s socks. That’s when 15-year old Shavod Jones pulled his own gun on McDonald and delivered three shots to his head and throat. He describes how in the moments following the shots, he remembers his partner holding him and rocking back and forth. “My partner’s heart was breaking that day I was shot,” he tells the students.
gives the students pause for a bit of a laugh, telling them how an FDNY Chaplain was on the ready at the hospital upon his arrival and that he was in no position to say he was holding out for the NYPD Chaplain. He speaks then of his beautiful wife, Patti Ann, and how she’s always said that there’s no such thing as coincidences, only God-incidences. And he tells the students a bit more about the location in Central Park where he was shot. He speaks of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton, the first American-born saint to be canonized by the Roman Catholic Church and how she founded the Sisters of Charity and built a motherhouse and an academy on the Central Park grounds nearly exactly where he had been shot. He’d always felt he was spared there, on that hallowed ground, for a reason – another in a series of God-incidences that he and Patti Ann had experienced throughout their lives. The days that followed were a blur, but he remembers asking for a priest. He pauses to ask a favor of his young audience, that if they ever find themselves in a
thing to them was to find forgiveness in their hearts. Detective McDonald told the students that if he hadn’t been able to forgive the young boy who shot him, he would never have survived. He’d shared with them his strong sense that holding things like anger, revenge or hatred in your heart can be as damaging as a bullet, only spiritually rather than physically. Relating to the youth in the room, he has them giggling a bit in thinking about how angry their brothers or sisters sometimes make them, about the kid in the playground who was being a bully and how it’s hard to practice forgiveness for even the little things
that they experience in their lives. He brings the message home in asking them to think about exercising this important muscle, their hearts, in practicing forgiveness in their everyday lives. He promises them that everybody is going to make mistakes and that it’s important for them to remember this on their good days and on their not so good days. McDonald mentions wars in foreign places and our soldiers on other shores and how that says to him that there’s not enough peace in the world. Then he ends his time with the students of Saints Cyril and Methodius by asking them to join him in a prayer of peace, praying a decade of the Rosary together. He also reads them a prayer that speaks of the uniqueness of each and every one of them, telling them how his mission in life has been clear – to share his message of faith and forgiveness with anyone who will listen. Then he sends them off to give some thought to the reason God has put each of them on this Earth, asking them to practice forgiveness, help others to heal their hearts so that they can practice forgiveness, and share the gifts that God has given them, so that they, too, can find their special reason for being here. If a pin had dropped, the sound would have resonated clear as a bell, as a hundred fifth through eighth graders sat in the auditorium at Saints Cyril and Methodius (SSCM) School in Deer Park, anxiously awaiting the arrival of NYPD Detective Steven McDonald. Detective McDonald was shot and paralyzed from the neck down in the line of duty by a teenager in July of 1986. The whirr of his motorized wheelchair brings added gravity to the already silent room. Yet Detective McDonald managed to bring an air of hope to what could be a solemn topic. As the Student Council President introduces him, he smiles as he gives quiet directions to his colleague, and as he takes center stage, breathing into a tube to move his wheelchair forward. He starts with one correction to her intro – “Thank you for the introduction. One correction, though, I’m not retired.” Detective

Dressbarn Donation The Deer Park School District recently recognized a special donation project by Dressbarn which greatly enhanced the district’s vital Life Skills Center. The initiative was spurred by Terri Morolla, store manager of the Dressbarn in the Great South Bay Shopping Center in West Babylon and parent of a special needs child in the district. At the Life Skills Center, John F. Kennedy Intermediate School students in the innovative Fun Club program learn life and social skills in a special simulated
“apartment.” The recently introduced “retail store,” completed through Dressbarn’s generosity, enables the JFK students to learn shopping, money and budgeting skills using real clothing and food items. Working with Mary Reynolds, the district’s administrator of human resources and pupil personnel services, and Lydia Vitale-Sweet, district manager from Dressbarn’s regional office in Centereach, Morolla facilitated the Life Skills Center donations, obtaining fixtures, supplies and other store items

Fresh flowers serve many purposes. A bouquet of flowers can be a gift on a special holiday or birthday. Some people apologize with flowers, while others use flowers to convey feelings of love or appreciation. Many people like to display fresh-cut flowers in their homes because their beauty can brighten the mood indoors. Others plant rows and rows of flowers in a garden with the express purpose of cutting them and bringing them into the home. While outdoor flowers can remain beautiful and bountiful outside, once they are cut, there is a limited amount of time before they begin to wilt and wither. But there are ways to prolong the life of cut flowers to enjoy their beauty as long as possible. • Cut correctly. Creating a large enough surface area on the stem
for the uptake of water is essential. That is why florists recommend cutting the stem on a slant to expose more area to the water. • Place flowers in water immediately. Some people advocate cutting the stems while they’re actually submerged in water. However, you will probably be fine if you simply recut the stems on flowers you brought inside and immediately put them in a vase of water. The key is not to let the tip of the stem dry out or close up with an air bubble, sap or other substances, preventing the uptake of water. Be sure to use lukewarm water so as not to shock the blooms. • Remove leaves. Take off the leaves of the plant that would end up underwater in the vase. Exposure to the water could cause the leaves to rot and fall off, creating
algae or sludge in the vase water. It also may breed extra bacteria or attract small insects to the water. However, do not to remove the thorns from roses, as this tends to shorten their shelf life. • Choose young flowers. Mature flowers may have peaked and begun to make room for a new round of blooms, so try to choose young buds or blooms that just opened so that you’ll have an opportunity to enjoy them longer. • Create a viable water atmosphere. Once a fresh flower is cut and a stem is placed in water, bacteria
and fungi can start to grow almost immediately. These microscopic organisms can clog the small tubes inside the stem that suck up water for nourishment. Many florists send home a packet of water additive to alleviate some problems in the indoor environment. The packet will contain a biocide that kills bacteria and fungi. There will be an acidifier as well as sugar. The acidifier makes the water more acidic to allow better absorption of water up the stem.
