In The Mood As a former student of psychology, I am continuously fascinated by those factors which cause a person’s mood to drastically change from one moment to the next, often with no discernable explanation. cause some perceived slight…what? Chances are, it’s something else entirely. (Read: Everything is not always about you!) The thing is, when you’re in a foul frame of mind, it’s difficult to see beyond the black cloud. Best everyone stay out of your way until the storm has passed, as you can’t be held accountable for your tone, whether impatient, annoyed, indifferent… in short, anything but friendly. Negativity breeds more negativity, and those who dare to cross paths with those in such a state are just asking for trouble. And so the cycle continues. Day after day of trying to dodge the slings and arrows of those who

would bring you down to their level, if you let them. It’s an effort, to be sure, to block out and continue on your merry way. But what other choice do we have? There comes a point when you need to avoid being sucked into the cycle. I often envy those who seem to exude nothing but positive vibes, who appear to be in a constant state of contentment. Is it genuine? How do they achieve such a mentality and, better yet, maintain it continuously? I suppose, even if it is merely a means of keeping up appearances, such a skill should be applauded. Fake it ‘til you make it, as they say. Perhaps they should hold a class on that.

It’s amazing how all different kinds of people can all be in the same place and get along. College is truly a place where anybody can fit in. On my floor alone, there are kids from Hawaii, Alaska, Puerto Rico, Sweden and Russia. It seems like these students wouldn’t fit in well with the typical idea of a student from the continental United States. At Villanova, I’ve seen this sort of integration become a reality on many levels. Within the classroom, the dorms and the minds of Villanova’s student body, everyone is equal. There is no disparity between the treatment of different economic groups. Regardless of gender, creed, sexual orientation or any other generalization, there is a niche to be found. This flawless integration can be found on the roster of my Rugby team. We have all types of students. Everyone

At the annual science fair at Deer Park’s John F. Kennedy Intermediate School, more than 80 third-, fourth- and fifthgraders vied for prize ribbons in front of a panel of discerning judges. In preparation for the March 24th competition, each student used

Deer Park High School students sang their hearts out while trying to avoid the clutches of a predatory plant in this year’s showstopping production, the comedic monster musical “Little Shop of Horrors.” Performed at the school’s auditorium on March 26th, 27th and 28th, it starred Mauricio Montes as Seymour and Destiny Parsons as Audrey, with other major roles played by Joseph DeNoyior, Olivia Grizzle, Sam Henkel, Kate Keller, Jessica Orelus and Alec Winters. Based on Roger Corman’s low-budget 1960 horror-comedy film about a nerdy florist and his pet man-eating plant,

“Little Shop of Horrors” was mutated into a popular musical by composer Alan Menken and writer Howard Ashman and premiered Off-Off-Broadway in 1982. It was later adapted into a 1986 film. Directing for Deer Park’s thespians for the 11th year in a row was James Henry, while set designer Eileen Cullinane took a final bow, retiring after 27 years of Deer Park theater. Other dedicated faculty contributors included music director Scott Abrams, assistant director Catherine Lubrano and choreographer Kristen Wallace, with sound by Catherine Thompson and lighting by Kyle McCourt.

Fourth and fifth graders at Saints Cyril and Methodius School in Deer Park prepared a moving presentation of the Stations of the Cross during Holy Week. Parents, students and faculty assembled for a prayerful session as Principal Sister Susan Snyder set the tone with a moment of silence and an opening prayer. After the beautiful presentation of the 14 stations, the students shared what they learned and what they felt while preparing for and presenting the stations. Their reactions

were as touching as the performance, sharing how much it meant to them to act out each silhouette and how it brought them closer to understanding how difficult Jesus’ sacrifice must have been. The most poignant comment came from one fourth grader who said he’d felt Jesus’ presence during their narration of the Stations of the Cross. Many thanks to Father Vincent Schifano for initiating the idea, as well as Mrs. Wiepert, Mrs. Congro and Mr. Pantuliano for working so closely with the students on preparation and execution of this beautiful presentation of Silhouette Stations.

Deer Park High School senior Asante Mills was one of only 80 Long Island student-artists recognized for the recent “Long Island’s Best: Young Artists at the Heckscher Museum” gallery show, chosen out of hundreds who submitted. A comprehensive artsin-education program integrating Huntington’s

Heckscher Museum and Nassau and Suffolk high school art classrooms, Long Island’s Best encourages students to be inspired by works on display at the museum, using the experience to create their own original works of art. The process culminates in a juried exhibition, the only one on Long Island that provides high school students the chance to see their artwork on display in an art museum. Mills’s stunning, colorful piece “Push,” created from latex paint, rubber cement and cardboard, was inspired by Maria Robertson’s 2012 installation “222,” part of the Heckscher’s exhibition “Modern Alchemy: Experiments in Photography.”

Accompanied by his proud mother and art teacher Derek Mainhart, Mills attended the March 28 opening reception and awards ceremony at the Heckscher, enjoying the opportunity to interact with viewers and fellow artists alike. “Receiving direct feedback was the greatest personal gain for me, as I was able to interact with the audience as they experienced my piece,” he said. “It was an honor to be a part of the show.” “Asante’s art is already at a professional level, both in concept and execution,” said Mainhart. “This will not be the last time you see his work in a museum.”

Bringing the medieval world to life, students in Vanessa Whitney and Laurie Osbern’s ninthgrade social studies class recently engaged in an interactive lesson about the Middle Ages. Students were divided into learning groups and visited different stations to study the lives of various members of

medieval society. Each station included primary and secondary source documents as well as visual images. At a special additional video station, the freshmen donned headphones donated by the district’s information technology department and watched two educational videos from The History Channel that

explored medieval knights and their weapons. “Our students enjoy working collaboratively in groups, and the opportunity to add a video station really enriched this lesson,” said Whitney. In a culminating activity, student chose a member of medieval society and wrote creative mock diary entries as their selected personage.

Banquet Hall in Deer Park with her family and friends in attendance. Born on March 22nd, 1915, Anna raised five children with her husband Augustino in Ridgewood, New York. Now at 100 years of age, Anna is a loving grandmother to 18 grandchildren and 37 great

grandchildren. Anna continues to live on her own unassisted, where she cooks, cleans and sews on her own.
