I was summoned to compose this week’s column, something about “deadlines” and this thing called “Seasons™ Magazine,” whatever that is. Word is, my Human was especially overwhelmed and couldn’t think of anything creative to write. So here I am, yet again, to save the day… From my understanding, there’s a section called “Snippets” in the middle of each edition of the newspaper this week, highlighting aforementioned magazine and its latest spring content. Heck, I’d eat once an hour if she served me. But I digress. Back to the magazine. There are features on Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and Memorial Day, tips on eating healthy and
getting in shape for bathing suit season and… well, you’ll have to read it yourself – I only made it past the Table of Contents. Tiny brain = short attention span. All I know is dinner has been exceptionally late these last several weeks as my Human worked tirelessly to finish putting together the editorial content. It had better be good! And so, once again, I swim in to save the day. Buddy to the rescue! Because, really, who wouldn’t love an endorsement from everyone’s favorite Betta? Eerie - the only word to describe that morning. The morning sun was slowly inching toward the gray sky, revealing a light fog. The mist seemed to grow thicker as the sun crept through its tendrils. Glancing up and down the block, I crossed the street to wait for my bus to come and whisk me off to the hellhole known as high school. The screen of my phone illuminated the vapor that twirled around me, coiling itself around me like a snake squashing its prey. A twig snapped on the lawn behind me, causing me to spin around, getting whipped by my own cherry hair. Squinting my eyes, I scanned the dying lawn, but saw nothing. Unable to shake the thought of someone standing in the darkness, watching me, I stepped further into the protection of the towering street lamp. The dusty yellow glow swallowed me willingly as I wrapped my arms protectively around myself. Antsy, I leaned forward, allowing myself to see past all the parked cars to see the yellow lights of the bus working its way toward me. A sense of relief flooded me. Dropping my guard, a loud banging noise sounded behind me, causing me
to jump, stirring up the fog around my sneakers. Glancing over my shoulder, I noticed a white gate swinging in the wind, crashing into its post. The squeaking of tires drew my attention back to the street. In front of me stood the school bus with its doors wide open, welcoming me with a blast of heat. I slid into the seat high above the back wheel, before glancing once more at the lawn to see if anyone was there. A dark figure moved closer to the sidewalk. The eyelids of the being opened, revealing glowing yellow eyes that latched onto mine the second they were scanning the world around them. A faint memory of piercing gold eyes studying me ran through my head at the speed of light so I could not even visualize what the owner of the one-of-a-kind orbs was. The bus began to roll away, but my eyes were glued to the golden ones hidden in the fog. When we rounded the corner, my contact was broken without my consent. The memory began to play again as I leaned back into my seat. A square jaw. Smooth almond skin. Sun-kissed hair. I knew those eyes. It was –

Homework Helpers The Deer Park School District’s English as a New Language program – formerly known as ESL, or English as a Second Language – features several support programs, now in place for students and their families, including the ENL Homework Helpers Club. In this new offering, an elementary/ENL-certified
teacher in the ENL program provides support for ENL students in grades 3-5 at John F. Kennedy Intermediate School, as a complement to the longstanding Study Buddy program for grades K-5. According to Gina Palasciano, the district’s curriculum associate for world languages and ENL, the Homework Helpers
Club began as a trial in January 2015 and was so successful that it was expanded to run every Wednesday after school from October through May. Homework Helpers support is also available for Deer Park’s English language learners at both the high school and middle school.

At Deer Park’s March 22nd Board of Education meeting, five SCOPE Awards for Excellence winners were recognized: district office noninstructional aide Danielle Aiken (in the Support Staff category), Board trustee Al Centamore (School Board Service), John F. Kennedy Intermediate School

Mighty Metalworkers
New technology courses at Deer Park High School are serving to take college and career readiness to a new level, providing cutting-edge skills that can lead to valuable jobs in various trades. This revitalization of tech offerings includes the return of the metals class, taught by newcomer Jeremy Ferrara, necessitating investment classroom infrastructure so that the metal shop can function to its fullest
potential. In his plans for expansion, Jachan Watkis, the district’s new curriculum associate for science and technology, brought in Ferrara. “Jeremy came in with a passion for and sense of technology education beyond traditional pathways, putting computer software into practical use,” said Watkis. Metals I is an introductory course in metalworking, including concepts such
as sheet metal layouts, sheet metal designs, sheet metal forming, basic machining, measuring techniques, spot welding, metal joining procedures, metal properties and metal separating procedures. It also includes identification of materials, the operation and role of tools, important safety practices, and an exploration of careers in metalworking. “It’s a project-based course in which students design, engineer and construct projects with emphasis on the subject of math, science and technology,” said Ferrara, who also teaches robotics, CAD and World of Technology. “Students should leave this class feeling confident in entry-level sheet metal fabrication. By: Shirley Koval Lieberman Spring has sprung, so why haven’t I? The earth is revitalized. Everywhere I look, there are buds bursting to show off their finery. Where is my photosynthesis? If I get too much sun, I get more wrinkles, burnt skin, cancer. No raking or thatching will help me...oh no! The gardeners come and look about. Oh yes my dear, you need some chemicals to kill the weeds, and seeds to fill in the bald spots of grass. Great idea, here comes the retin A, the alphahydroxyl and this and that. The wrinkles keep coming. The hair gets thinner and grows in all the wrong places. And the garden looks great! The trees grow tall and need a trimming. I grow short, I’m never winning. The colors are glorious, the reds, the purples, the whites and yellows. My colors all come out of a jar, a brush, a pencil. IT JUST ISN’T FAIR!

A Real Thriller The annual variety show at Deer Park’s John F. Kennedy Intermediate School proved a real “thriller” this year, culminating in a special surprise performance by administrators and staff. The February 26th event, organized by fourth-grade teacher
Melissa Price and teaching assistants Donna Arena and Sue Wright, featured students showing off their multifaceted talents in everything from music, dance, cheerleading and gymnastics, to magic acts, comedy and hula hooping. For the finale, the zombiecostumed staff performed
the classic Michael Jackson song “Thriller,” as choreographed by staff member CarolAnn Gaona during the weeks prior to the show. “The students loved the closing act of the show as it was a total surprise,” said Principal Susan Bonner.

Call for Nominations The Association of Fundraising Professionals of Long Island (AFPLI) is now seeking nominations for the Philanthropy Day 2016 Awards, which honor individuals and organizations whose commitment and dedication to Long Island exhibits outstanding leadership and effectiveness. Philanthropy Day takes place this year on Friday, November 18th, at the Melville Marriott, 1350 Walt Whitman Road in Melville. to an individual who demonstrates exceptional leadership skills in coordinating groups of volunteers for fundraising projects with one or more not-for-profit organizations. O u t s t a n d i n g Fundraising Executive Honoring a fundraising executive who practices his/her profession in an exemplary manner. Nominee should have at least 10 years of professional fundraising experience. O u t s t a n d i n g Corporation - Awarded to a company that has distinguished itself as a “good corporate citizen”
and has demonstrated a commitment to the Long Island through financial support and activity that encourages and motivates others to respond philanthropically to the Long Island community of not-forprofit organizations. The Gilbert Tilles Award Designated for an organization, business, foundation, or special individual (or family) that exhibits the unique qualities that further the goals of philanthropy. The award recipient will demonstrate leadership in motivating others to participate in philanthropic endeavors
and has personally committed time, effort and financial resource to one or more charities. Leaders of Tomorrow – This award is given to a person between the ages of 5 and 18 who has demonstrated exceptional accomplishments through volunteerism and philanthropic activities. Age and grade will be considered when reviewing. The Philanthropy Day Awards are presented during the annual Philanthropy Day luncheon which takes place on Friday, November 18th at the Melville Marriott.
Philanthropy Day is a one-day conference held in November in cities across America where fundraising professionals, board members, business leaders, community activists and individuals gather for professional development and to honor their leaders. pooled talent, and an even stronger continuum of care for individuals and families impacted by substance use disorders.” Together, the agencies now offer a full menu of services ranging from school-based prevention programs, to mental health/substance abuse screenings, to brief interventions and NYSlicensed outpatient treatment, to recovery support and relapse prevention. Additional services offered by the agencies include: youth mentoring, services for military veterans, children’s mental health services, transitional housing and professional continuing education programs. “Ultimately, this collaboration will allow both agencies to reach and assist more people. That is the only reason these two agencies exist; service provision and support for Long Islanders. We at LICADD are excited about this great partnership,” said LICADD Executive Director, Steve Chassman, LCSW, CASAC. Two licensed chemical dependency treatment centers, a children’s mental health program, a shelter for homeless teens and transitional housing for young people are among the agency’s offerings. FCA’s annual budget is $22 million – most of which comes from government - and the organization currently employs 320 full-and part-time employees across 11 sites in Nassau County and one in Suffolk. LICADD’s focus on addiction dates back more than 60 years and the largely privately funded agency offers a variety of evidencebased substance abuse prevention programs, family-centered addiction services and professional trainings. LICADD also maintains an earned income venture – an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) that currently serves 60,000 private sector employees in the tri-state area. The agency currently has offices in Mineola, Holbrook and Riverhead. Dr. Jeffrey Reynolds, FCA’s President and CEO, served as LICADD’s Executive Director from 2009-2015 and the agencies have several board members and major donors in common. “This is the right move at the right time,” said Dr. Reynolds. “As Long Island struggles under the weight of an historic heroin crisis and a persistent fiscal crisis, joining forces means more efficiencies,
