Time for Buddy: The Sequel. As some of my more loyal readers may recall, I recently adopted my very own Betta fish, Buddy. He’s currently one and a half months old in time-spent-in-myfishbowl years, which has already surpassed the lifespan of most of my previous goldfish, surely a good sign. Like most fishy friends, it seems Buddy’s main mission is to eat. Constantly. Every time he catches a glimpse of me, here he comes, face pressed up against the glass, ﬂippers “wagging”

Robin Marks, Long Island Regional Director, Amber Court Assisted Living, discussed the benefits of the Medicaidfunded assisted living program. Richard Mollot, Executive Director, Long Term Care Community Coalition, explained the laws and regulations that support resident-centered care and how one can care for someone with dementia without drugs. Members of ADRC’s Legal Advisory Committee presented a special session titled “Planning for LongTerm Care through the Various Stages of Alzheimer’s Disease Saving the family Home.” During the keynote discussion, Ms. Smith and Mr. Gasby shared with the audience the challenges they faced when Ms. Smith was diagnosed with earlyonset Alzheimer’s disease. They talked about the first time he noticed she had the disease, how it affected their marriage and how they are attempting to get elected officials to provide more federal funding for research, as well as funding for programs and services to help support the many local families who are coping with a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease.

(ADRC) hosted its 11th Annual Education Conference and Expo 2015 “Caring with a New Perspective” to provide attendees with important information about Alzheimer’s disease from discussion panels, breakout sessions, and a keynote discussion that featured restaurateur B. Smith and her husband, radio host Dan Gasby and moderated by Christine Geed, Communications Director, Office of New York State Senator Phil Boyle. The annual Education Conference & Expo opened up with an introduction by Mary Ann Malack-Ragona, Executive Director/CEO, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc., and a caregiver discussion panel moderated by Ellen Tolle, RN, MPS, Instructor, ADRC. Living For Now have many responsibilities. I think I can speak for both of us when I say that our upbringings have been studded with instances of joy – and love. Even though it only feels like I’ve been away at school for a few weeks, in about a month I’ll be done for the summer. At that point, one quarter of my college experience will be in the record books. And three years after that, I’ll be in the real world. I’m not ready for that. I’m still enjoying the present! I like to think that overly planning for the future takes away from our experiences in the present. It is a little like borrowing happiness at the expense of enjoying today. Hopefully, I can enjoy my life in every stage. I do not want to be another statistic sucked into the corporate monotony. I want to make myself happy, while making my family proud.

The website includes comprehensive bullying awareness resources and information for students, parents, and faculty. As of 2012, New York State requires all public school districts to designate a school staff member as a Dignity Act Coordinator (DAC) to protect students from harassment, discrimination and bullying. This website includes a list of each school district’s DAC, which is provided as a resource for students who may encounter bullying. Entry submissions are due on May 1st, 2015. The music video clip must communicate the issue of bullying and illustrate ways that their peers can address this serious issue. We are looking for a short video clip posted through a YouTube account to be no more than 3 minutes in length. Over the past few months, I’ve come to appreciate the present. The entire idea of “living in the now” highlights the fact that life is ﬂeeting. When I’m 100 years old, I don’t want to look back on my life and wish I enjoyed my childhood more. Sure, it is important to make the right decisions, but having fun is what is really important to me. My brother is sixteen years old. In just a few weeks, he will turn seventeen. Watching him grow up has been my proudest accomplishment. He might not always make the smartest decisions, but I know that he will always do the right thing when it counts. I feel like I’m somewhat responsible for shaping the man that he is becoming. I’m happy to say that I’ve had an inﬂuence on him. When he and I are grown and have families, we might forget to stop and smell the roses. Right now, we don’t

This new service allows residents to pay their taxes online in an efficient and safe manner. With MuniTrax, taxpayers can easily view and pay their tax statement upon registration. Residents who usually wait in long lines to pay their taxes in person can now do so easily from the comfort of their own home. “The Town of Babylon

is always looking for ways to make government more efficient for our residents; MuniTrax does exactly that,” said Receiver of Taxes DiSomma. “Not only will residents be able to enjoy the ease of paying taxes from home; they will also be able to use the fastest, most secure and easiest method of tax payment. With second half property taxes due May 31st, I strongly encourage all taxpayers to pay online using MuniTrax.” MuniTrax accepts e-checks and all major credit cards. The announcement of this year’s Best Communities for Music Education

designation highlights the importance of maintaining music education as part of schools’ core education. Community music programs have attracted increased attention this year due to a landmark study by Northwestern University brain scientists, whose research discovered new links between students in community music programs and academic success in subjects such as reading. Other reports confirm that learning to play music can boost academic and social skills, such as processing math and learning to cooperate

in groups. The BCME’s Best Communities award is decided on a variety of metrics reviewed by the University of Kansasaffiliated Institute for Educational Research and Public Service, including student enrollment in music courses, Advanced Placement or honors weighted music courses offered, the number of minutes per week devoted to both classroom music and performing ensembles, and the appropriate districtwide staffing of certified music teachers.

Leading Long Island’s public schools to greatness – that was the theme of SCOPE’s 14th Annual School District Awards Dinner, held at Villa Lombardi’s in Holbrook on March 23rd. The annual event was part of SCOPE’s celebration of 50 years serving children and their families. More than 140 employees from dozens of school districts across Long Island were honored for their extraordinary contributions and dedication during the 2014-2015 school year. Awards were presented in five categories: School Board Service, Community Service, Teacher Service, Support Staff Service and Administrator Service. Honorees in these five categories received a personalized plaque in recognition

of their outstanding achievements. In his welcoming remarks, SCOPE Executive Director George Duffy thanked those in attendance for serving their communities with such dignity and dedication. He also thanked them for addressing the challenges that thousands of students face on a daily basis. Susan Schnebel, president of SCOPE’s Board of Directors and superintendent of the Islip School District, addressed the honorees by telling those assembled: “Those being honored this evening are the cornerstones of our community. They are extremely passionate and proud.” Mr. Duffy individually acknowledged the honorees in each of the five categories as

they were called on stage to receive their plaques. Afterward, many honorees commented on how grateful they were to be recognized,

as well as how much the recognition had inspired them to continue to strive for excellence each day in their communities.

Rev. Vincent Schifano, better known to the students of Deer Park‘s Saints Cyril and Methodius School as “Father Vinny,” took some valuable time out of his daily schedule to give SSCM first graders a “behind-the-scenes” look at the church, including an excellent overview of the items priests use when they say Mass. One of the most beautiful things Father Vinny showed the students was the chalice he received from his parents when he was ordained 15

years ago. Years later, when his parents passed away, Father Vinny had his mother’s diamond engagement ring and his father’s wedding band welded into the chalice to remember their love and support as he entered the priesthood.
