The marketing communications team of Demopoulos and Sanchez finished in the top 10 in roleplay and fifth place overall. Mian finished in the top 10 in role-play and principles of finance, earning him fourth place overall. “Qualifying for the international level of competition is a tremendous accomplishment for any DECA student, let alone three first-year members,” said business teacher and DECA adviser Gregory Menig. “The boys are excited about the opportunity to see how they stack up against other trophy winners from across the country and around the world. This trip will be a tremendous learning experience that they will remember for the rest of their lives.” Five additional Deer Park competitors received medals for their performances at the Rochester conference. Adam Ahmed finished in the top 10 in principles of finance, Alban Astafa finished in the top 10 in restautant and food service management, Nicola Ingrassi earned seventh place overall in the entrepreneurship participating event, Lauren Lazarte finished in the top 10 in principles of hospitality, and Tyler Teng finished in the top 10 in personal financial literacy.

my entire floor has been sick at least once. A few weeks ago, a stomach bug made its way around my hallway. It spread like wildfire, mainly due to the close quarters associated with college dorms. As we move into spring, it should be easier to fend off illness. I’m looking forward to finishing the semester with a great GPA and a clean bill of health. With any luck, I can continue participating in all of the facets of college life that have become part of my daily routine. With no parents here, I get to make my own decisions. Sure, that might mean I get sick once in a while, but I also get to develop fully. By making my own decisions, I’m developing life skills that cannot be found through any other manner. I’m really enjoying my time here at Villanova. Hopefully, I can make my parents proud in the years to come.

Since I started college, I’ve noticed that I’ve been getting sick really frequently. Throughout high school, I was never the kind of kid to stay home from school with a cold. Now, it seems like I can’t go a month without getting a sinus infection. I think I can attribute this to the close quarters of dorm living. Additionally, my mom has always micromanaged my health. Now that I’m living on my own, nobody is around to make me wash my hands after class. I’m sure not having her here has impacted my health negatively. I’ve been trying to take steps to ensure I stay healthy, but it’s tough when combined with juggling schoolwork, extracurriculars and sports. With any luck, I can hold off any further illnesses. I want to be in good condition for rugby season! I’ve noticed that I’m not the only one getting sick. Almost
The Long Island Pet Expo that was held from March 6 through March 8th at the Suffolk Community College in Brentwood, had a recordbreaking number of attendees and pets adopted this year. The 6th annual event had well over 14,000 attendees in the 2.5-day expo. Over 70 pets adopted, the most at any of their shows in the tri-state, from local rescue groups that were at the expo. Over 600 owned dogs came with their owners to enjoy the pet friendly event over the weekend. “We were very pleased with the number of adoptions at the expo, especially learning that a few senior dogs were adopted including a 10 year-old dog. That makes me very happy!” said Karen Garetano, co-owner of Family Pet Shows, who host the show. “Even though we have been hosting pet shows for 25 years, this 6th show at Suffolk Community College in Brentwood was a great show for us. People came from all over the island and from Queens, New York City and Brooklyn. It was wonderful to have so many dog owners bring their dogs with them to enjoy the show too. Our vendors were very happy with the turnout and there were a lot of smiling faces, from the children to the adults and even their pets who attended.” Next year’s show is scheduled for Friday through Sunday: March 4th, 5th and 6th, 2016. Math Money Math-A-Thon Funbooks by solving math problems, and their sponsors made donations based on how many problems or pages the students finished. Students who raised $35 or more in sponsorship pledge donations were awarded commemorative T-shirts. According to Math-A-
Thon coordinator and math lab specialist Marianna Grieco, the school has raised almost $24,000 to date for the hospital. “We are proud and happy to help children and their families at St. Jude,” she said. “And the Math-A-Thon problems have helped our students become better at math.”

Cabaret Night Members of the Deer Park Arts Council joined students, families and friends to attend Deer Park High School’s first Cabaret Night, a project of the school’s chapter of the International Thespian Society. The March 10th event was created and run by two Deer Park seniors, Anthony Anello and Christina O’Toole, the chapter president and vicepresident, respectively. The pair recruited chapter
members and arranged the show, in some cases writing the material themselves, as well as serving as joint masters of ceremonies for the evening. All of the performances – including songs, dances and short plays – were chosen, rehearsed and performed by the students themselves, under the supervision of Dr. Jeff Dailey, the founder and faculty adviser for the chapter. “We came away filled with pride and admiration
for the talents shared and initiative taken by the students,” said DPAC President Ron Becker. “They selected songs, wrote monologues, danced and put together an evening of variety and energy that left us wanting more. It was a unique collaboration, achieving something that we have not seen before. Hands On Science Fifth-graders in Nicole McAdam and Kristy DiSilvio’s class at Deer Park’s John F. Kennedy Intermediate School recently spent a day exploring the more than 400 hands-on exhibits at the New York Hall of Science at Flushing Meadows-Corona Park in Queens.
The students experimented with mirror images, color, force and motion, among other biology, chemistry and physics topics. One of the only remaining structures from the 1964 New York World’s Fair, the New York Hall of Science museum is New York City’s only interactive
science and technology center and features more than 400 hands-on exhibits exploring. “It was great to see the children so excited about learning,” said McAdam. “It was our first time at the Hall of Science, and we look forward to going again next year.”
